Posted Breed: Airedale Terrier / Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). Taylor is a love bug! A little shy at first, he will warm your heart with his sweetness once he gets to know you. He would love to have you all to his own, so a family with no other pets would be best. He loves to learn new things and is very obedient and easy to get along with. Taylor enjoys being outdoors and would be an excellent hiking companion! Because he is shy inside the shelter, someone who is willing to visit and walk him several times will be sure to help him make his transition into a new home. He would be a good candidate for a foster-to-adopt situation. Call the shelter for more information on Taylor! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Paris, ME
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Reno is proof that big guys can be very sensitive. He gets lonely when he is not around the people he loves. And, he needs his daily hug. Seven year old Reno has lots of energy. However, an issue with his hips keeps him from being too active. He can’t overdue exercising. He shouldn’t run or talk long walks. He would enjoy tagging along in the car or sitting and watching television. This makes him a great choice for someone that lives a quiet life-style. Reno is taking daily supplements for his hips and he is responding well to them. Before his owner passed away he lived in a home where there was a cat but it is uncertain what his reaction would be to living with another one. Responsible Pet Care is looking for a quiet home for Reno with someone that will continue to give him his supplements and a hug at least once a day. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Peggy is a very special girl. She had a very hard time adjusting to shelter life when no one came to claim her. It has taken her some time to learn to trust people again and inside this beautiful creature we have found a loving, kind, silly and playful being. Several meetings with Peggy will be necessary for her to get to know and trust you. When she does, you will have a devoted friend for life! She will need a quiet home with adults only where she can concentrate on building her own confidence. A family with an understanding of pack leadership and obedience training would be great for her. Peggy has a lot of love to give!!!! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679. DOZER

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mastiff
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Paris, ME
Posted Breed: Mastiff (short coat). Dozer will fill your heart with love! This true gentle giant is an amazing dog. He loves to meet and greet new people at the shelter. Even when someone is "just looking" we introduce everyone to Dozer and they are all amazed at his kindness and calmness. We are all so proud of him! Because he is a true King of his castle, Dozer has his own real twin sized bed at the shelter with his Jeweled Crown nameplate on the headboard and it is not uncommon to find one of us snuggled up next to him on it while visiting! Dozer is loving and obedient, patient, soft and gentle with everyone. He is a big guy, and therefore, due to his size, he should not be in a home with children! Dozer comes when he is called, sits on command and walks nicely on leash. He has so much to offer! Like many dogs, he has his likes and has one dislike.....cats! He cannot be placed into a home with kitties nor other small animals. He does like most other dogs but cannot be paired with an overly active dog in his new home...here's why! When we first met Dozer, he was not the guy he is today. He was very thin and in pain from arthritis in his knees, something he has had for quite some time but was never treated in his previous home. He could barely walk. All he needed was some good food, supplements and pain medication and some TLC from our staff! Today, Dozer can not only walk....he can RUN!!! He is a beautiful sight to behold when he gallops across the play yard to greet you! Because of his physical limitations, we do try to keep his activity to a minimum, but sometimes he just can't resist! He loves to go for rides in our SUV but does require help to get in and out. He is 150 pounds and still a bit under weight for his breed, but he should be kept at this weight to reduce the stress on his knees. Dozer will need a home with a large yard, preferably fenced so that he can roam freely and be safe. He will require his medications and supplements daily and a high-quality, grain-free diet. He is a velcro dog and will want your constant companionship, so someone who is home or a retired couple would be a perfect fit for him. We just cannot say enough good things about him, he is perfect, of course, in our eyes! If you think you can offer the type of home, love and devotion this dog needs, please research his breed to be sure he would be a good fit for you, your family, your lifestyle and your home! Then, give us a call and ask for Pat or Lucille! We dare you not to fall in love with him!!! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679.
