Imagine yourself strutting down the street with him at the end of your leash. He is very family devoted, but because of his size, should not be in a home with small children. He treats his toys nicely and doesn’t tear them up..we think he counts them as his friends. If you know the Akita breed, come meet him at #AkitaRanch and make some room for your new best friend. Akita

A.K.A. : Akita Inu, Japanese Akita, American Akita, Great Japanese Dog
Overview: The Akita was developed to hunt bears in Japan and, as such, is a great guard dog. They're strong and loyal, often employed by police for active duty.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male:85-130, female:65-110
Height (in): male:25-28, female:23-26
Colors: Any color, including white, pinto, or brindle.
Coat: The hair is straight and coarse, and the undercoat is soft and dense.
Character: Akitas are intelligent and calm. Though great watch dogs, they bark infrequently.
Temperament: This breed prefers not to have other dogs in the family. There may be problems if they do not become acquainted with cats and other household pets early in life. They get along with children that are respectful of their space.
Care: The Akita is a shedder. At least twice a year, groom it with a metal-toothed comb.
Training: A good deal of patience and persistence is required when training this breed.
Activity: Akitas are able to adjust to your schedule. Daily walks are good, but they seem to handle foregoing a walk, if needed.
Country of Origin: Japan
Health Issue: This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, immune diseases, skin problems, eye, and knee problems.
Life Expectancy: 10-12

More About Akita Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

As with any rescue dog who’s lived in a kennel for a few months, please take some time to get to know him. He loves a game of tug-of-war and welcomes all visitors with a robust bark until he figures out your there to play. Play is always a great ice-breaker for dogs because if you love play, you’re a good egg in their eyes.He is reserved with new people but can be very loving with family. Like most Akitas he is selective about canine companions and seems to prefer females over other boys. He would be a great addition to a breed experienced home with room for him to at least stroll around and check things out. Weighing in at about 85 lbs currently, Chanel could use a little more exercise and toning. Chanel was discarded by her former owner at an extremely overcrowded public shelter and the shelter was told that she was aggressive to other animals, but we have had quite a different experience. Chanel is a very social dog and would be very happy to have a doggy friend. Chanel may just be a typical selective Akita who picks and chooses her friends, so if you are interested and have another dog a meet and greet would be required. Breed: Akita
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Romoland, CA
Posted Breed: Akita (long coat). Takuya is a 2 year old youngster who has a lot of questions...Are you going to eat that? Did you say, go for a walk? Can I interest you in a game of BALL? He has a lot of energy and hilarious puppy antics that’ll keep you laughing. He is a rare long-haired Akita, however this past summer’s hot weather forced us to shave him down due to hotspots. He was never intended for kennel life, and needs to live in a HOME. Choose him to be a part of your family and you won’t regret it. He should be the only child and pet in the family since he dis not appreciate sharing his toys, food, or even water and can be challenging unless you offer something better in trade. He may consider living in a home with a large breed submissive female but definitely cannot live with other male dogs. He is non-reactive to other dogs on a leash and will play with them on the other side of a fence but he is territorial and does not want to share space with other animals, so a multi dog household and off leash environments are not for him. Due to his size, exuberance and resource guarding he should not live with or be around children; Takuya wants all the toys and attention for himself. Potential adopters must have patience and dedication or a great relationship with a groomer willing to deal with an extremely furry extra large dog who will only tolerate so much grooming before he becomes antsy and rambunctious. Posted Breed: Akita / Weimaraner / Mixed (medium coat). Located in MISSOULA, MONTANA THIS DOG HAS BEEN COURTESY POSTED FOR A PRIVATE PARTY. HE IS CURRENTLY LOCATED IN MISSOULA MONTANA. PLEASE CONTACT peblakeslee8@gmail.com if you are interested in adopting him. Our dog, Hiro, is a 10-year-old Akita mix (1/2 Akita, 1/4 Rottweiler, 1/4 Weimeraner). We have had him for 9 years and we are re-homing him because, despite our training efforts, he is aggressive with our 3-year-old granddaughter. She is having a sibling soon and they are in our home frequently. He has given warnings with baring of teeth and growling, no biting. We rescued him from a no-kill shelter in Portland, OR. 9 years ago where we lived until one month ago (we now live in Missoula, MT). He required about 2 years of training which has made him a very well-behaved and loving dog. It is excruciating to give him away, but we know of no other good answer because now that we know he isn't 'getting over' the aggression, we can't, in good conscience have him near our grandchildren. We consulted our obedience trainer, but she said to try a couple of things, but not to expect him to change at 10 years old. He has some mid-back issues that are minimal if we don't allow a lot of jumping (even though he's not a jumper) or hikes with much elevation. He has a sensitive stomach but does great if he eats only his appropriate kibble. We have some pain meds which are rarely necessary for back pain. He is current on all his immunizations, is getting Frontline for fleas/ticks, and is neutered He is fun, sweet, loyal, 'talks' to you when he's about to eat, everyone loves him, loves to go in the car. He sits, stays, waits, heels, plays 'find it', comes almost always, does not retrieve very well. His best friend was our cat until the time we moved. He would not be good with just any cat; however, he may adapt to a cat over time. Posted Breed: Akita (medium coat). Located in SAN JOSE CA Tete Noire (Called Norrie by his close friends) is a 7 to 8 year old Male Akita, Neutered. 98lbs. Noire was found wandering in San Jose California, and weighed in at around 71lbs. Most of his hair was gone, and he was suffering from severe mobility issues as well as malnourishment. He was spotted by a Shiba Rescue, who sent out notices for him, but was never reclaimed. For the last 6 months, Noire has been living in a Foster Home, and gets along well with dogs, large and small. However, he is head shy, allowing only very close humans to pet his head, without snapping at them, and in one case where he was under severe stress, he bit a human who was touching his head. His reactions are such as though he was beaten or hurt by past owners. So, only folks with deep commitment to training Noire, and patience with his issues will be considered. No first time Akita owners, and no children for this dog's new family. He is currently on medicines to help him manage the stiffness in his back legs, and occasionally is prone to hot spots so he is fed limited ingredient foods to keep his allergies at bay. With the right human, this handsome and loving boy is very protective and playful. He can't really run, but he sure can walk, and he wants to walk right into a new forever home! She was very emaciated and had a skin condition. Ninka is now fully vetted. It turns out not only had she just weaned pups but she suffered from a disease called pancreatic insufficiency. She was not absorbing the nutrients in her food. The solution to this condition is simple. She just needs enzymes added to her food. Ninka is around four years old and just stunning. She has gained over 15 pounds since she was brought into rescue. She enjoys her new found health and can be quite elegant as she races around the yard. Ninka is spending a lot of time in a home with several children aged ten and up. Ninka loves cuddling up on her doggie bed and is house broken.
