Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). Meet the AMAZING Monti! This boy loves to play with ropes and play tug-a-war, he knows how to swim and loves summer days in the pool, which is not typical of his breed, but Monti is no typical guy! This hunk loves car rides and going out for his daily adventure! Monti is well trained, walks great on leash, and knows his basic commands. He is a big boy, so needs someone who knows how to manage his personality properly with the right combination of love, respect and leadership. He is fine with other smaller or submissive dogs, but would do best in a home as the only dog as he prefers to be the center of attention!! Monti adores well mannered children and is just the most amazing companion! If Monti sounds like the guy for you, please e-mail us to savealife@4liferescue.org

American Bulldog

Overview: Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a wagering sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring—Bulldogs had taller, more athletic frames (much like the Olde English Bulldogge). When bull baiting was outlawed in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more relaxed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original Bulldogs. Great family dogs, American Bulldogs are sweet to children. They love family-oriented occasions and want to be involved. With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their masters. Tough and determined, American Bulldogs have an impressive stamina and strength. They are always game for playtime in the back yard or working in the field.
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight (lbs): male-70-120 female-60-100
Height (in): 19-27
Colors: white, brindle, brown, red or tan
Coat: Short, coarse coat. For such a short haired dog, American Bulldogs shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.
Character: American Bulldogs are friendly, happy lovable dogs with an assertiveness and confidence that never gets out of control. Though initially stubborn in training, they soon respond to their masters’ commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.
Temperament: American Bulldogs are loyal and loving animals that prefer to be with people. They do well with children, when socialized from a young age. May not do well with other dogs.
Care: The short coat requires infrequent bathing and brushing.
Training: This breed needs firm, consistent, but not harsh training. They are highly trainable and can be used as agility or search and rescue dogs.
Activity: American Bulldogs MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored American Bulldogs can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: American Bulldogs generally live from 10 to 16 years, and tend to be strong, physically active, and often healthy. Some health problems in American bulldogs are often found within certain genetic lines, and are not common to the entire breed, while others, such as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL),[1] Ichthyosis, disorders of the kidney and thyroid, ACL tears, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, entropion, ectropion, and bone cancer are more common to the general population of American Bulldogs. There are DNA tests available to help breeders screen breeding animals for NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis)[1] and Ichthyosis. It is highly recommended to spend time to research your breeder information, including your American Bulldog's family history. A Penn Hip (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement project) or OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) screening is recommended for all potential breeding animals. Some breeds of American Bulldog are prone to allergies. Symptoms like a runny nose or a rash are examples of signs of allergies. Some vets recommend dog owners to give 25 mg of Benadryl per day; in most cases it helps.
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About American Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Weimaraner / American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Meet Diesel! A BEAUTIFUL, All American boy, born on the 4th of July! Diesel is all dog, a goofball, and full of fun. He’s been through a complete board and train program and knows SIT, STAY, COME, PLACE (where he can stays until given a release word), and knows how to WALK GREAT on LEASH. He's also CRATE TRAINED. Diesel loves to go on walks and to do things. He’d be great in a home who is looking for a dog who wants to get out and about. He’s even OFF LEASH TRAINED. Diesel LOVES to PLAY FETCH, go on CAR RIDES, and to hang with his humans. Poor Diesel has had a rocky past. Diesel lost his home because his human was going to die. We helped him get adopted, but the adopters later found that they are more suited to smaller dogs and feel that a better home for Diesel would make him happiest. Diesel has lived with dogs, but because he is a big boy, we are looking to place him in a home with medium to large dog(s), or if he’s an only dog, that’s ok too, but no cats! For Diesel, a cat is a play toy and a kitty wouldn’t appreciate his dog play. Diesel has attended many group play sessions with other trained dogs off leash in his training program. If you are ready for a great, big, handsome boy to take a road trip with or hit the town with, Diesel will be your buddy. Contact Mitzy@4LifeRescue.org, or call Mitzy at 714-469-8878.

Posted Breed: American Bulldog / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Gonzo, a beautiful and smart 2 year-old American Bulldog mix who was rescued from the San Pedro Shelter where he was a staff favorite. This boy is super friendly and full of life! He's a big puppy, but knows his basic commands and is even crate trained. He loves to play ball and tug-o-war, but above all he is an EXCELLENT cuddle bunny! Although a young dog, he likes his mellow moments, but loves his active ones even more. He would make a great dog for someone who is active and needs a buddy to take along on adventures....just be sure he gets his sunscreen on him first! He's very good on leash and does not like to leave your side, so is also a great protector. We can't say enough good things about this beautiful boy! He will be a wonderful addition to a loving, active and experienced dog owner...could that be you??

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat). Lucky is an adorable and lovable pup that loves to play and snuggle. He's very dog and cat friendly, and enjoys going on walks and car rides. His previous owners sheltered him a lot and sadly their 7 year old child beat him often, so he would be best with older and considerate kids only. Since having been rescued and living in a great foster home, Lucky has made amazing progress and has become a happy and confident boy. He is looking forward to finding his new forever home soon! If you would like more information about this cute little dude or would like to meet him, please contact Judith Henehan via email at ajhenehan@gmail.com or via cell at 562-547-1839. Thanks so much!

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. I am a spayed and chipped 8 year old Belgium Shepard Labrador mix. I am up to date with my vaccines and flee medication and I am also crate and potty trained. I do ok with other dogs because I was raised with one however I am usually the alpha and I am a little weary around children and cats. Despite that, I am very loving and always interested in what my mom is up to! I love to make sure things are in order around the house and hunt pesky mice and rats. My owner jokes that I am a circus dog because I can do a trick of jumping very high in one place when I'm excited! Please check me out and contact Alexis @ alexis.spaeth@gmail.com if you would like to take me home!

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Bernie is a timid little dude with a rough past filled with neglect. He was rescued from a hoarding situation where he was left chained outdoors 24/7 with no human interaction and was fed when someone remembered to give him some scraps. However that hasn’t stopped him from learning how to love! He is sweet and shy and slow to warm up but once he knows you, he loves to be loved! Bernie would be best in a house with no small children. He does well with other dogs, but would prefer a mellow or smaller pup as a house mate. Unfortunately, due to his lack of early socialization and exposure to new experiences, sometimes Bernie is still scared by loud noises and quick movements. Because Bernie spooks easily, he will need to be in a very secure yard, and on a leash at all times when he is outside. Bernie loves to just hang out in little nooks or in his bed as it helps him feel more secure. He loves walks, and gets very excited for meal time. Bernie is very gentle, sweet and quiet and needs someone who is the same. Would you like to be the luck person to get to show Bernie how beautiful life can be? If so, please e-mail us at savealife@4liferescue.org

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). My name is Darwin. I am an extremely GENTLE, sensitive, and personable 4 year old Staffordshire Terrier/Pit Bull mix. I weigh about 65lbs, but I'm essentially just an oversized lap dog (no, really- I am). What you need to know about me: I need a stable, structured, and calm home. I am very stressed out whenever I go outside, and prefer to stay home then go on walks or out into public places. The perfect situation for me would be a house with a fenced in yard or patio where I can easily do my business. Just something simple! I am fearful and insecure around other dogs, but I have slowly made a couple furry friends, including another dog that I am fostered with currently. An owner who is experienced with special needs dogs like me would be best since you understand the need to be patient, and to give me lots of encouragement and leadership. I am always curious about what you are doing- so if you hear someone tip-toeing behind you, that would be me! I know basic commands, and I am housetrained- I do not like to be crated, but because I'm such a good boy, my foster mom trusts me alone while she's at work all day. I also like to sing when I get excited, which is mostly whenever I see you! I am neutered, microchipped and up to date on all of my shots. If you are interested in meeting me, please contact my foster mom Rachel at info@hollywooftotherescue.org

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Tripod Tinker Bell was rescued by a Good Samaritan in June 2015 from a very bad situation. She was starved and emaciated at that time, and eventually had to have her back left leg amputated due to severe neglect by her previous owner. Ms. Tinker Bell does not see herself as a handicapped furry however, as she still gets around perfectly fine. In fact, being a very happy tripod has actually gotten her extra love and attention by everyone she meets which she always enjoys! Tinker Bell is a sunny and cheery girl who's smile is contagious. Tinker Bell is approx. 3 years old with beautiful green eyes, has 1 amputated leg, spayed, current on vaccinations, not microchipped, 50 pounds, housetrained and crate trained. She adores people and kids but should be the only dog and best around older kids. She is healthy as a bug, loves car rides and walks, and to play with squeaky toys. Tinker Bell is a jumper...yes, even as a tripod!... so an 8' fence is a requirement but doesn't have any bad habits like barking, chewing or digging. Any chance she gets, she'll want to snuggle up to you and give tons of affection and kisses. If you think Tinker Bell will be a perfect fit within your family and would like to meet her in person, or have any other questions about her, please contact Mitzy at mitzy@4liferescue.org. Thank you.

      Location: Orange, CA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This gorgeous blonde bombshell is desperately in need a of a new home where she will be loved and cherished for the amazing girl that she is! Roxy is about 4 years old, very well trained and well mannered. She is obedient and loyal to her humans. She loves everyone she meets, and she even knows not to jump up on them. This is the perfect family dog - very low maintenance and easy-going. She is great with kids, is playful, and she loves her toys! She loves to go on walks and car rides with her family. She just wants to finally find a home that will be able to love her and play with her forever! She is completed house trained and has never needed to be crated. Roxy has had it pretty rough her entire life. Her original owner was a homeless man who cold not care for her. Another family adopted her, but then they had to move and could not bring Roxy with them. So Roxy was adopted by a 3rd family - only to find out that one of the other resident dogs in the house was not very fond of her. This caused a few scuffles between the dogs and now, for Roxy's own safety, she has to be kept separately. She needs a safe home as soon as possible that can give her the love and attention she deserves. We believe she would do fine in a home with other dogs given a proper introductions, and she does very well meeting other dogs. She does like to be an alpha-dog. She has not been cat tested, but her previous owners said she should not be around cats. Please contact Allison Maya for questions and adoption inquiries at allisonmaya@yahoo.com or 714-235-2857

I love to play and give lots of kisses to my humans. I'm up to date on my shots and spayed. My family has to find me a new home for my own safety because one of the other dogs in our home has become aggressive toward me and attacked me. So now I'm a little scared of other doggies. I need a home that can work with me a little bit on basic commands and one that will protect me from loud noises! I get really scared around fireworks and other loud noises, and I just want to feel safe. If you think you can help me with a home or if you have more questions about me, please contact Victoria Folk at vafolk@gmail.com
