Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). ***CLOSED DECEMBER 23-30*** If you are interested in adopting, please submit an application online at http://www.secondchancepetrescue.org/adoption-application.html. Regular hours will resume December 31. SADLY, IT'S OFFICIAL. Hershey's been patiently waiting for his furever home for over a year now. Like most of our long-term residents, prejudice against "pit bull" type dogs is the main reason he's been passed over for so long. People often assume they're mean and dangerous but, in Hershey's case, nothing could be further from the truth. He is a lover. He is calm, gentle and affectionate toward everyone he meets. His favorite things in life are back scratches and belly rubs, and he will do anything you want him to in order to get them. Hershey is about 4-years-old and around 55 pounds with a moderate energy level. He likes to take walks and play in the yard but, what he needs most, is a best friend to cuddle up with on the couch. Kids would be great for him and other big dogs may be an option too. HERSHEY'S ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN SPONSORED. If you are interested in adopting this bighearted lovebug, please stop by the Corning Animal Shelter at 4312 Rawson Rd, Sat-Sun 10am-3pm; call us at (530) 824-1985; or apply online at http://www.secondchancepetrescue.org/adoption-application.html Our regular adoption fee is $75 and it includes the dog's spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea treatment, dewormer, and microchip. Prospective adopters must agree to a home visit, have secure fencing and allow their dog to sleep inside at night. Those coming from out of town may submit a vet reference in place of a home visit. All renters need landlord approval. If you already have a dog or two, they must be spayed/neutered and brought to the shelter for a meet and greet. Homes that already have than two dogs, or any unaltered dogs, will not be considered. Exceptions to these rules may be made in special circumstances. To get started, please stop by the shelter at 4312 Rawson Rd in Corning Sat-Sun 10am-3pm, call us at 530-824-1985 or apply online at http://www.secondchancepetrescue.org/adoption-application.html

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Sadly, Sampson has been in the shelter for over a year now. He was nearly adopted once and his would-be mom said he was potty trained, well mannered and gentle with her kids. The problem was that Sampson was a little scared by things like the vacuum and the youngest child thought it was funny to get a reaction out of Sampson with noisy toys. The big young boxer mix is about 3-years-old and around 75 pounds. He's a smart, confident and outgoing people-lover who is responsive to training and able to sit, stay and walk well on a leash. Sampson would love a home with older kids (age 6+) and may be able to share a home with another big well socialized dog but not cats. She gets along well with everyone, including kids, and she's so good with other dogs that she doesn't even react to those that aren't so easygoing. Dixie rides well in the car and was very well behaved when we took her shopping at the pet store recently. Her foster mom says that the petite 40-pound, 1-year-old terrier mix loves snuggling, playing tug-of-war and chasing tennis balls. She's doesn't chew on anything but her toys and is completely house trained. Dixie would make a great family pet and would do well in almost any moderately active home without cats.
