Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Montana was saved just in time from a very full Grapevine Shelter. His angel rescued him right before his time was up! Montana is a stunningly handsome fellow. He doesn't just get by on his good looks! He is bettering himself by going to school where he's learning basic commands and etiquette. He isn't the best in his class but he gets an "A" for effort. He benefits from tutoring from his foster mom. Montana would probably choose private investigator as his career of choice, he loves to investigate everything. Montana is a loving boy who is quick to roll over and ask for a belly rub! He's an active boy who enjoys the company of other dogs his same size and temperament. Montana has done well with the cats in his foster home while under close supervision; he is interested in chasing them! Montana would do best in a home with children that could keep up with his energy and activity level. He'd love to be part of an outgoing and active home that will continue his education and provide positive reinforcement! Montana's adoption fee is $225 and includes his neuter, rabies, microchip, vaccinations, heartworm test (negative) and heartworm prevention while in our care. If you are interested in this stunning boy, please fill out an application at http://www.lonestarrescue.org/lone-star-adoption-form.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). "Hi! My name is Snoopy or Snoop Dog as my foster mom calls me. I am a medium size boy weighing in at 40 to 45 pounds. I am approximately seven months old. No one seems to be in agreement with my mix other than there seems to be a little lab in me. Whatever I am, I am a sweet, happy, rambunctious little guy. I love to play and run with my big foster brother and big foster sister. I love toys. Big or small. My foster mom thinks I would fit into just about any home especially one with another furbaby for me to play with. As I said before, I get along with the big dogs and the little one too. I am a healthy guy. I am ready to find my “forever” home as my foster mom calls it. Potty training is going well. I hardly ever have an accident and if I do my foster mom says it is her fault because she was not paying attention. I do give hints that I need to go outside. When let out, I go immediately." From foster mom: Snoop dog is a very sweet and outgoing puppy. I feel he would fit in anywhere and will be a great addition to any family. He loves attention but can also enjoy a chew toy by himself. He sleeps in his kennel most of the night but will cry if he needs to potty. He will return to his kennel and go back to sleep. He occasionally gets in the “big” bed and loves to sleep under the covers next to “his” human. An older, patient fur sibling would be a great asset for Snoop to help him learn “the ropes”. He is a smart little guy and learns quick. Any family will be blessed to have little Snoop as a permanent member. Snoopy's adoption fee is $275 and includes his neuter, rabies, microchip, three rounds of vaccines, three dewormings and heartworm prevention while in our care. If you are interested in this handsome guy please fill out an application at http://www.lonestarrescue.org/lone-star-adoption-form and we will be in touch within 48-72 hours.
