Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. Currently Fostering in New England!! Meet Mama Amorina. Or as her foster calls her, Mama. She's a beautiful american bulldog mix who is looking for her second chance at life. She comes to Paws from our sister rescue in TN, Robyns Nest. Mama was found in rural Tennessee in a rain culvert the morning after a big rain storm with her puppy in tow. A good samaritan attempted to search for their family, but unfortunately no one claimed them. Mama has the sweetest disposition. We don't know what her past is, but we know she holds no ill will towards anyone. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is good with kids. Update: This past summer, Mama was romping with her canine friends in the yard and was injured. She was immediately brought to the emergency vet where it was discovered that she had a spinal injury that would require surgery. Supports of Robyn's Nest and PAWS New England rallied behind Mama, and raised the funds required to get her the surgery she desperately needed. The surgery was completed without any complications and she moved to a foster home for recovery. Mama underwent intense physical therapy and laser therapy so that she could regain function of her hind legs and walk. Volunteers droves hours each day just so she could attend. Many months after surgery and therapy, Mama has made an incredible recovery!! She does have a limp that makes her walk like a drunken lady. But we think that just makes her more adorable! Besides this, she has no other medical issues related to the injury. She is restricted from playing, and will be for the rest of her life, due to fear of re-injury. But that doesn't bother Mama. She is happy being a lazy love bug. It is believed that with continued physical therapy, Mama's limp would decrease and her walking would improve. Mama would love to go to a home where she could continue her therapy, but anywhere with a warm bed for snuggling sounds just fine to Mama. After all she has been through, she deserves a loving family to call her own. Mama charms everyone she meets instantly with her incredible personality. Some wonderful family is going to be lucky to call her theirs!! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Petey had a home if you consider being tied out in the back yard as a puppy, not even a year old, having a home. With no regular attention, training, or socialization Petey was growing big and strong with no manners. At least his owner had the good sense to call K9 Savior Foundation, and ask for us to take this sweet boy, when she was afraid his high energy might knock the kids down and hurt them. At the rescue, Petey spent his first year learning from the best dog buddies he could find Jack Black & Lady Belle, both wonderful PAWS Alumni. This gorgeous guy is the sweetest, most loving pup who ever lived! He’s a clown who LOVES to swim in the pond and play with female dogs at the rescue. He’s a fabulous foster uncle for the new puppies that come into the rescue, running around showing them the ropes, and laying patiently while they crawl all over him. Petey has a lifetime of love and slobbery kisses just waiting to share with some lucky someone! 5/29/17 Update: Petey is housebroken using a doggy door. He is calm and well behaved indoors but loves to run full speed when outside. Petey would do best in a home with a large fenced yard or as a jogging partner. We recommend Petey be crated when not supervised as he looks for something to chew when he's bored. Petey is happiest when he has a female dog to run and play with. He will run with a male dog but isn't as playful and energetic... he LOVES girl dogs. Check out his video! m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10208243728520526&id=1522178203 Name: Petey the Pit bull Breed: Pitbull Terrier Sex: Male Age: 2 years old Weight: approx 65 lbs Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date as of 3/26/2016 Heartworm: Negative as of 3/26/2016 Microchipped: Yes BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Good with Dogs: Enjoys playing with female dogs. Petey may be defensive when strange male dogs get too close to his face; however, with slow, proper introduction he has been fine with non-dominant male dogs. Petey currently has a high energy male terrier friend that he enjoys playtime with. Good with Cats: No Good with Kids: Unknown. Not recommended around small children. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Abby (and Scruffy) were surrendered by their owner in March of 2015 to a dog sanctuary in Tennessee. The owner was moving and could not take the dogs with him. What a tragedy for Abby and Scruffy, who found themselves displaced out of their forever home as seniors! Very quickly, the sanctuary staff realized that the boarding situation was too overwhelming for these pups, and they were moved to a foster home in TN, where they spent several months before Paws New England was informed of their plight to travel North. They arrived in New England on January 30 to a new foster home. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn’t look or act her age! While she is a senior and is very calm and laid-back for the most part, she does show initial excitement when people visit, and she makes it a point to seek out attention from adults and children. After a while, she likes to have a quiet place to rest away from the activity. A generally quiet home would suit her best. She loves to be walked daily and is very good on leash, but also loves an opportunity to occasionally run around in a fenced yard and to stretch out in the sun. Abby (after proper initial introductions) is usually good with other dogs. She would, however, prefer to be an only dog or to be adopted with Scruffy, her life-long companion. This sweet senior deserves nothing less than a fantastic home and we’re determined to find that for her!! Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Must have another friendly and confident dog in the home- no exceptions!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. If you would like to be part of Channings fairy tale ending, we'd love to hear from you! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Dixie, and another pup, were abandoned at a house in Midtown Memphis by a college student who moved away. The people who rescued her called a friend of K9 Savior who then brought her to us and contacted PAWS. With some great veterinary care and TLC Dixie is looking and feeling great. She is a super sweetie pie who is very affectionate and loves being with people. She currently has 2 doggy friends in her foster home and enjoys chasing, running, and wrestlng with them. Because of the dog attack that brought her to us, Dixie can be defensive when strange dogs get close to her face. She requires slow, careful introductions to new dogs and may not do well in dog parks. Dixie would probably be happiest in a quiet home as an only dog or with one other dog. Dixie keeps her toys and bedding neat. She’s trained on a doggy door and only rarely has potty accidents. Dixie’s favorite past time is to sit on her bed and watch what’s going on around her. She is well behaved and calm when free to walk around indoors but gets very excited at meal time. Dixie has so much love to give and can’t wait to find a home to call her own! Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Clementine, 9, and her daughter, 2 yr. old Suzy, were surrendered to a TN shelter in Nov 2016 when the backyard breeder had no more use for them. They have been in foster care since then, are VERY bonded and Must be adopted together. Their bio is long so as to get a complete picture. They are unique and loving and need a patient home willing to overlook their short comings. In return, they will adore and be devoted to their family….in time. These sweet girls were very timid and frightened for the first few weeks in foster care, but who could blame them when they never learned any social skills. Suzy, being braver than Mama, slowly began to explore her new world but would run back to their crate or bed without hesitation if there was any movement. Clementine wanted no part of any of it. But today they both come when called, most of the time, and freely walk about, though they prefer to stay snuggled together in bed. And they have also learned that snuggling with their foster mom is great too and they compete for attention. All this snuggling comes with lots of kisses too! They are not without their challenges though. Suzy has learned to use steps, but not Clementine, she needs to be carried. Clementine will walk on leash but easily slips out of collars and harnesses. Due to her weight and shape they cannot be made tight enough. And she is very, very slow. Suzy resists putting on anything and cowers and trembles. Her foster mom doesn’t feel it necessary to try to force the issue as she is so small she is not likely to need to go for walks. The girls have a fenced area where they are free to roam around and do their business. They enjoy being outside when the weather is nice but are NEVER left alone. They are both overweight which is a real challenge since they are not very active. Their diet is restricted and neither have many teeth, so along with softened kibble, they get lots of cooked veggies. They have no interest in playing with toys or their foster siblings, so their foster mom tries to get them to run to her for quick snuggles throughout the day. Each also have minor medical issues. Clementine is nearly blind due to cataracts but she has adapted well to her decreasing vision. It is not felt necessary to surgically remove them. She also has an enlarged salivary gland behind her right eye that causes it to bulge. She has seen a specialist and had testing and it was determined NOT to be a problem beyond daily eye drops to keep the eye moist. Recently, it was discovered that Suzy has a mild case of collapsing trachea which may cause her to cough. It should never become a problem, but there is medication if it should. More importantly, it was discovered that the bones of her skull never properly fused after birth leaving her with a “soft spot”. Care must be taken that she never gets hit or bumped on the top of her head. Suzy and Clementine would be wonderful companions for someone that has time, patients and unconditional love that can see beyond their faults. While it sounds like they are a lot of work, nothing could be further from the truth. They want nothing more than a cozy bed and/or crate and lots of snuggles, with each other and their person(s). Their forever home MUST be a quiet, adults only and have a fenced yard or area for them. They ignore other animals in the home. They need to be introduced slowly, at their pace, to new comers. Children frighten them, so exposure to them should be limited. Don’t let their needs and timid nature scare you off! These girls are a quiet joy to have around and you are guaranteed lots of love! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Hound / Mixed. 4/28 Now Fostering in New England!! Roscoe and his sister, Diva (adopted), were living in a home with 12 dogs and cats. Unfortunately, their home caught fire and they were some of the lucky animals to make it out. When they escaped they lived in the woods for weeks until they could be caught. After arriving to the shelter they were absolutely terrified. They never showed an ounce of aggression, but would just freeze and tremble. A number of weeks have passed and both pups are starting to blossom! Roscoe is a handsome 1.5 year old hound mix. He's the perfect size at 45 pounds! Now, instead of freezing when people approach he happily wags his tail. He's never walked on leash in his life and he's starting to learn how to do that. He loves running in the yard with his sister, Diva. He's come such a long way in such a short period of time. We'd love to see him in a loving & patient home where he can continue to blossom. He absolutely needs another friendly and confident dog in the home to show him the way. His sister, Diva, has recently been adopted and we hope it will be his turn next!! We will continue to update his bio as we learn more! Breed: Basset Hound
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Meet our special needs tri-paw basset hound Sadie. When our rescue partner Low Down Hound in Little Rock Arkansas found her, she was in very poor condition and badly injured as a result of a car accident several months earlier. She had severe wounds that were infected, and she was very under socialized. She spent weeks at the hospital and then weeks more lying in what seemed to be a deep depression. Her original owner was found, and he confirmed she had never had any vetting. Sadie moved to a local foster home and improved. She has been spayed, had her teeth cleaned as well as had all shots. She had many problems with her non-functional left front leg, so it was necessary to have it amputated. Sadie has completed HW treatment and doing well. She is 8 years old, but those years have not have been easy ones for her. She is fine with dogs and cats, but does not interact much, as she prefers people. Sadie prefers men over women. She is shy and likes to sleep on the bed if there are pet steps or she can be helped up. She is house trained but does have an occasional accident. She hops around pretty well and can manage a step or two up and down. She would benefit from losing a few pounds for the health of her remaining front leg. She is a very quiet girl but will play a little. We think Sadie would do best in a quiet home with primarily adult occupants. BASIC INFO: Name: Sadie Jo Sex: Female Breed: Basset Hound Age: 8 years old Weight: 50 pounds Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date Heartworm: Positive, but completed treatment in January 2017 Microchipped: Will be before adoption BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Dogs: Yes, has lived with other dogs.
