Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. Currently Fostering in New England!! Meet Mama Amorina. Or as her foster calls her, Mama. She's a beautiful american bulldog mix who is looking for her second chance at life. She comes to Paws from our sister rescue in TN, Robyns Nest. Mama was found in rural Tennessee in a rain culvert the morning after a big rain storm with her puppy in tow. A good samaritan attempted to search for their family, but unfortunately no one claimed them. Mama has the sweetest disposition. We don't know what her past is, but we know she holds no ill will towards anyone. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is good with kids. Update: This past summer, Mama was romping with her canine friends in the yard and was injured. She was immediately brought to the emergency vet where it was discovered that she had a spinal injury that would require surgery. Supports of Robyn's Nest and PAWS New England rallied behind Mama, and raised the funds required to get her the surgery she desperately needed. The surgery was completed without any complications and she moved to a foster home for recovery. Mama underwent intense physical therapy and laser therapy so that she could regain function of her hind legs and walk. Volunteers droves hours each day just so she could attend. Many months after surgery and therapy, Mama has made an incredible recovery!! She does have a limp that makes her walk like a drunken lady. But we think that just makes her more adorable! Besides this, she has no other medical issues related to the injury. She is restricted from playing, and will be for the rest of her life, due to fear of re-injury. But that doesn't bother Mama. She is happy being a lazy love bug. It is believed that with continued physical therapy, Mama's limp would decrease and her walking would improve. Mama would love to go to a home where she could continue her therapy, but anywhere with a warm bed for snuggling sounds just fine to Mama. After all she has been through, she deserves a loving family to call her own. Mama charms everyone she meets instantly with her incredible personality. Some wonderful family is going to be lucky to call her theirs!! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Despite everything that Babs has been through- she greets every person with a wagging tail and a wiggly butt. You'd never know that she once lived a life of abuse and neglect. Those days are behind her, and thanks to our friends at Happy K9 in Somerville, MA, and PAWS New England, Babs is onto bigger and better things!! Babs is a gorgeous pocket pittie at just 45 pounds. She absolutely loves people and her most favorite activity is cuddling on the couch. She enjoys going for walks, playing fetch and chasing balls. Babs continues to work on leash reactivity with dogs and has completed training with Heather Gutshall at Outbound Hounds. She will need some continued training and structure to keep up her success. Babs is getting along great with her laid back foster brother! She could do well in a home with another laid back dog and will need slow introductions to new dogs. Her foster mom is dedicated to her success and will help with post adoption support including help with dog introductions. Babs would make a wonderful companion for a dedicated family! She is perfectly crate trained and house broken. Now she just needs a family to call her own! Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. This very sweet boy is well known to Paws New England as he was adopted by one of our favorite volunteers - all has been well but Pepe has decided that their young child who is now on the move really isn't his cup of tea. After many days of angst on the family's part, everyone decided that it would be best to find Pedro a new home. They have done every single thing they can to try to make it work but he's not happy and that is all we want for this guy! Approx 9-11 years old, Pedro is blind which is obviously a contributing factor to his rather intense dislike of toddlers (even when the toddler loves him to pieces). He is truly a very special boy - he can navigate his way around new surroundings w/ amazing ease and does quite well with other dogs but no bouncy dogs or puppies please - they fall into the same category as toddlers in his book. Loves his crate and will happily land there with just the word "Crate" being said; he also loves your lap and a comfy bed. This would be a fantastic housemate for perhaps a senior or single person/couple w/o young children. You will be doing yourself a favor adopting this boy, we think you deserve it! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY is my motto and I am endlessly happy with the cutest wiggly body to prove it! My name is Reese Witherspoon and I am just as, if not, more beautiful than the star I was named after. I also have her gorgeous smile with sparkling eyes. I have her fun loving and sweet personality to boot. I was found as a stray with my pups even though I was just a pup myself wandering the streets. I am now living with 2 male dogs that absolutely love me, even the sometimes grouchy one, tolerates my non-stop affection and playfulness. I also have no problem sharing my food and toys with my doggie roommates or foster parents. When I am done playing with my boyfriends I love to get on the couch with them and my foster parents and snuggle up in a little ball of love. Or sometimes I like some quiet time by myself and will go nap in my crate. I love to go for rides in the car and I am a good girl on my leash. I am very energetic and would love to find a home the loves the great outdoors as much as I do. I will admit that I am still working on my manners, sometimes I just can’t contain my happiness and will jump and mouth you, but we’re working on it and I’m getting better each day. I’m housebroken, crate trained and I hardly ever bark. I could use some more socializing as I get shy in new places and meeting new people. I’m not aggressive in any way, but since I haven’t had a home to call mine, new places can be a bit intimidating and I’ll be a little shy. So in a nut shell, my perfect forever home is with a family that will work on my “puppiness” and take me out and about with them often to relieve my energy. I would love a playmate of the doggie kind (I’m not a fan of cats, well I am, I like to chase them). But as long as I get your never ending love and attention, I would be ok without a pup friend as long as I do get to play with one as often as possible. Trust my foster parents; you will just fall head over heels in love with me!!! Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Jake Owen did not have an easy start in life. He was starved and tied up for about 5 years while being used to hunt wild boars. Although his history has left him with emotional scars he is persevering and starting to flourish in his foster home! He enjoys a quiet, calm environment but he loves going on walks! Lounging around on the couch and eating are some of his favorite activities. He also loves to follow his foster mom around the house, but he still avoids his foster dad. Jake has a fear of men or anyone that in his opinion is scary. Sometimes on walks he gets scared but otherwise he does well on a walk. He is a flight risk so great caution must be used around doors and gates. Jake is a very fast learner and is completely housebroken! He also is crate trained. Jake has a great hound-mix howl that he uses to express himself! Jake has been known to shred things in his environment because of anxiety. He has started to become more comfortable in his foster home and he no longer is exhibiting that behavior. He will need to have a good kennel when he first arrives at a new home to prevent him from exhibit this behavior. Jake needs a family that is willing to work with him on his fear and prepared to be very careful as he is a significant flight risk. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Dixie, and another pup, were abandoned at a house in Midtown Memphis by a college student who moved away. Roaming dogs in the neighborhood killed Dixie's buddy and chewed her up pretty badly. The people who rescued her called a friend of K9 Savior who then brought her to us and contacted PAWS. We took her to the vet for wound care, mange treatment, and spay. She is now on the road to recovery and doing great! Dixie is a super sweetie pie who loves being with people. Because of the dog attack that brought her to us, she is defensive when other dogs snap at her for any reason. Dixie's amazing foster mom is continuing to work with her, but for now Dixie would probably be happiest as an only dog. Also for this reason she would do best in a house with older children. Dixie has also proven to be quite the escape artist and can easily climb a 6 foot fence! She will need to be closely watched outside even with a fenced in yard. Dixie has so much love to give and can't wait to find a home to call her own! And when Bella Amy became pregnant she was surrendered to a high volume shelter in Mississippi. She had a large litter of 11 puppies, however, only 1 survived. Bella Amy was a fantastic mama and now it's her turn to be cherished and loved. Bella quickly became a shelter favorite with her wonderful personality. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Abby (and Scruffy) were surrendered by their owner in March of 2015 to a dog sanctuary in Tennessee. The owner was moving and could not take the dogs with him. What a tragedy for Abby and Scruffy, who found themselves displaced out of their forever home as seniors! Very quickly, the sanctuary staff realized that the boarding situation was too overwhelming for these pups, and they were moved to a foster home in TN, where they spent several months before Paws New England was informed of their plight to travel North. They arrived in New England on January 30 to a new foster home. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn’t look or act her age! While she is a senior and is very calm and laid-back for the most part, she does show initial excitement when people visit, and she makes it a point to seek out attention from adults and children. After a while, she likes to have a quiet place to rest away from the activity. A generally quiet home would suit her best. She loves to be walked daily and is very good on leash, but also loves an opportunity to occasionally run around in a fenced yard and to stretch out in the sun. Abby (after proper initial introductions) is usually good with other dogs. She would, however, prefer to be an only dog or to be adopted with Scruffy, her life-long companion. This sweet senior deserves nothing less than a fantastic home and we’re determined to find that for her!! Posted Breed: Coonhound. Now fostering in New England! It's hard not to fall in love with Shanley! Whether it's his awesome floppy ears, his handsome face or his goofy personality, we all love Shanley! Shanley is a handsome 7 year old coonhound mix who was saved from a high volume shelter in TN. He was in an awful state when he joined PAWS and it was obvious he lived a life of neglect. He has since joined a foster home where he is thriving! Don't let his age fool you! This boy is active and loves loves loves to play and frolic in the snow. He loves his food puzzle and is happy to entertain himself with it until the treats run out! We'd love to see him join a family who can give him the playtime & exercise that he loves. While in TN he was not destructive with toys or bedding and did great using the doggy door. Sometimes his hound nose gets the best of him and he can sniff out those tasty treats. Shan however does not like to be separated from his family or doggie pals so he is not confined to his crates. Shanley loves playing with his canine friends and would do best with another dog who also enjoys playing...endlessly! Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. If you would like to be part of Channings fairy tale ending, we'd love to hear from you!
