Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. Currently Fostering in New England!! Meet Mama Amorina. Or as her foster calls her, Mama. She's a beautiful american bulldog mix who is looking for her second chance at life. She comes to Paws from our sister rescue in TN, Robyns Nest. Mama was found in rural Tennessee in a rain culvert the morning after a big rain storm with her puppy in tow. A good samaritan attempted to search for their family, but unfortunately no one claimed them. Mama has the sweetest disposition. We don't know what her past is, but we know she holds no ill will towards anyone. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is good with kids. Update: This past summer, Mama was romping with her canine friends in the yard and was injured. She was immediately brought to the emergency vet where it was discovered that she had a spinal injury that would require surgery. Supports of Robyn's Nest and PAWS New England rallied behind Mama, and raised the funds required to get her the surgery she desperately needed. The surgery was completed without any complications and she moved to a foster home for recovery. Mama underwent intense physical therapy and laser therapy so that she could regain function of her hind legs and walk. Volunteers droves hours each day just so she could attend. Many months after surgery and therapy, Mama has made an incredible recovery!! She does have a limp that makes her walk like a drunken lady. But we think that just makes her more adorable! Besides this, she has no other medical issues related to the injury. She is restricted from playing, and will be for the rest of her life, due to fear of re-injury. But that doesn't bother Mama. She is happy being a lazy love bug. It is believed that with continued physical therapy, Mama's limp would decrease and her walking would improve. Mama would love to go to a home where she could continue her therapy, but anywhere with a warm bed for snuggling sounds just fine to Mama. After all she has been through, she deserves a loving family to call her own. Mama charms everyone she meets instantly with her incredible personality. Some wonderful family is going to be lucky to call her theirs!! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler. Hi my name is Clara and I was named after the famous nurse Clara Barton because I was such a great caregiver to my puppies. My puppies have both gotten adopted and now it’s my turn. I have a zest for life and I’m a life of the party type gal. I have a tail that wags non-stop, feet that tap dance when I’m happy and I have yet to meet a person I didn’t just love! I am crate trained, sleep through the night, love to snuggle on the couch, but I’m up for adventure when the time is right. I would make an excellent walking, jogging, hiking partner and I love to go go go anywhere with people. I am working on leash walking, know how to sit and stay with a hand signal and my foster family says I’m super smart and willing learn! I would love someone that could teach me some fun tricks! I am the perfect mix of personality, spunk and snuggle all rolled into one! Rollo

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Rollo was brought in as a stray with bite wounds to hind legs and bottom area. He also had a tail injury that required us to amputate part of his tail. He has spent the last 4 months recovering and he is now ready to find his forever home! Rollo is a little shy and can be slow to warm up to new people, but once he gets to know you he is a big snuggle bug. He is a smart guy and has mastered several skills already -- sit, stay, paw, catching treats in the air, and walking on leash. Rollo is housetrained in the kennel, but that can change with a change in environment. In his downtime, Rollo likes to hang out on his doggie couch and would love to snuggle in bed with his new humans. Rollo enjoys spending time outside in the snow or sunshine --- he does not do rain --- and enjoys walks in the woods and short hikes. Rollo's ideal home would be a moderately active household --- someone who would take him for walks in the woods, short hikes or throw a ball and then relax on the couch in front of the TV. Updated as of 8/2017! Rollo has made amazing progress over the last few months! In addition to the other commands that he already knew, he has learned how to clean up his toys out of the yard and bring them back to his bed. Rollo has also demonstrated his love of playing fetch, and will faithfully bring back and drop any of his toys into an outstretched hand. While his favorite toys for fetch are his Kong and his mini football, he has also started to catch frisbees! When he's not fetching his toys, Rollo loves to sit in the shade outside. He has also continued to walk very well on leash, and will often stay right beside the person walking him, without pulling at all. Additionally, Rollo has made amazing progress when it comes to interacting with other dogs. Although he's still a bit socially awkward and timid around other dogs, and would most likely do better being the only dog in the household, he has learned to sit and ignore them while on walks or hikes. However, when it comes to humans, Rollo has blossomed into a social butterfly, and loves meeting new people. Although he prefers slower introductions, after a few minutes of getting to know a new person, he loves to get belly rubs and ear scratches from them. Rollo especially loves kisses and hugs from people that he is familiar with, and would make the perfect addition to a loving family. Name: Rollo Sex: Male Breed: Pitbull mix Age: 6 years old as of April 2017 Weight: 63 pounds of April 2017 Spayed/Neutered: yes Vaccinations: Up to date Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes Medical: Takes daily allergy drops orally. Doing great with daily medication. BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Dogs: Needs slow introductions, prefers larger female dogs Cats: Unknown Kids: Unknown. Is shy, we are looking for a home with kids over the age of 12. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Rottweiler / Mixed. Everyone who meets Dixie falls in love. She is one of the sweetest, most sensitive, loving dogs you could hope to meet. She's so happy all the time, and even though she's currently residing in an indoor kennel, she has made the best of it. Just seeing her foster mom come through the door brings out her bubbling personality and she jumps up and down with excitement while she waits for her turn for daily one-on-one time. After a chest massage, having he ears rubbed, and giving lots of sweet kisses, she's ready for dinner or a snack. Her favorite past time is to lay in her bed and watch what’s going on around her. Dixie's ideal home would include: an affectionate human, someone to take her for walks, toys to call her own, lots of treats, and a plastic crate with a fluffy bed inside to sleep in (she prefers to sleep in a crate). Dixie does not like to be outside alone so a fenced yard is not required, however, during nice weather she would enjoy a fenced yard with a doggy door for quick potty breaks. Dixie would do best in a quiet home until she is confident in her surroundings Dixie is still anxious around new dogs due to her background. She has successfully played with several non-dominant dogs in her foster home but she needs slow introduction. Ideally, Dixie would prefer to be the only dog or have only one other canine sibling. Background: Dixie, and another pup, were abandoned at a house in Midtown Memphis by a college student who moved away. During her homeless time, Dixie and her canine friend were attacked by a pack of dogs. Her friend didn’t make it but Dixie was rescued in time and with proper veterinary care she made a full recovery. Although she was defensive and anxious around other dogs when first rescued, she has made tremendous progress and with slow and proper introductions she enjoys playing, chasing, running, and wrestling with some other dogs. Dixie does not enjoy rough play with people. Although we have not had her with small children, we believe Dixie is best suited for a home with older children. Dixie has so much love to give and can’t wait to find a home to call her own. This sweet girl lost her home in 2015 due to her owner moving and not being able to take her and her canine brother, Scruffy. Scruffy has since been adopted and Abagail patiently waits for her forever family to find her. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn't look or act her age!! While she is a senior and very calm & laid-back, she does know how to have a good time. She greets adults and children with excitement and after a while she retires to a quiet place to rest. Abby loves to go for her daily walks and is very good on leash. She also enjoying trotting around her foster Mom's yard and stretching out in the sun. Abby would love a quieter home where she can spend her days relaxing and hanging out with her people. After proper introductions she does get a long with older, more mellow dogs. However, we think she'd love to be an only dog. And believe us, she has more than enough love to give! Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Must have another friendly and confident dog in the home- no exceptions!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. If you would like to be part of Channings fairy tale ending, we'd love to hear from you! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Chestnut ( aka PB&J ) is a young female Lab mix who is roughly 3.5 years old and 73 lbs. that found herself at a high kill shelter with her puppies. Her puppies were adopted out by another rescue, leaving Chestnut there alone; that is not the policy of Paws NE - we take mom and the babies (and daddy too if he's around). She has always been a very sweet girl, even in the shelter. Chestnut prefers to be your one and only. She promises she will shower you with unconditional love. She loves to go for walks and to ride in the car with the window rolled down so she can sniff the fresh air. Her favorite place in the woods is sniffing and exploring. Did we mention she is housetrained? Chestnut is social, calm and friendly around people. She loves to be where people are. Posted Breed: Beagle / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Penny in action with a friend .... https://youtu.be/6-31bAdYecc Updated 9/26/2017- Foster Mom: Penny is a wonderfully smart girl and the perfect combination of affectionate and independent, playful and low-key. Her ears perk right up when you call her name and just one look in those big beautiful eyes will have you falling in love with her. Some of Penny’s favorite things to do include playing with her toys, exploring her new surroundings, and most of all, hanging out with her dog pals. This sweet girl likely experienced little to no structure or love prior to being rescued and is still learning that the world can be a safe place. Now with a warm bed, regular meals, and the kindness and support of those around her, Penny is embracing life and her initial fear of meeting new people has significantly subsided, allowing more of her sweet personality to shine through. While Penny continues to make excellent progress in her foster home, she is still battling some anxiety and needs for people to be patient with her while she gets to know them. She thrives in the company of her dog pals and is looking for a home with at least one other confident resident dog who can vouch for the humans and guide her as she continues to flourish. Penny has shown tremendous resiliency and strength throughout her young life and is looking forward to starting the next chapter and promises that she will always be grateful for your love. Good with Children: Penny has not yet been tested with children, but we believe that she will do well with older, respectful children. Good with Dogs: Yes; Penny is looking for a home with at least one other resident dog. Updated Note from Foster Mom: My new foster Penny - SPECIAL girl... needs a home with at least one other confident dog, a yard to run in and more importantly time to adjust with no pressure. Took us two days to get her into the house and come near us at the Lodge but as you can see she is warming right up now. Labeled as feral nothing could be further from the truth - she loves and craves human attention. She's shy but I don't actually see her as fearful. This dog needs the right situation. - someone home A LOT, room to run while contained for now, someone with patience - although I have not witnessed it she has been noted to have an aversion to crates so hence the reason someone home until she can be tested alone loose in a house. Rescued from the Memphis Animal Shelter, this little peach is still a bit shy but is coming around with the help of her canine foster friends whom she loves - she's checking the humans out and seems to think they will be okay. For now she's healthy and doing well and we hope to find a new home for her in New England ASAP. Name: Penny Wise Breed: Beagle/Lab Mix Sex: Female Age: 1 years Weight: 35 lbs Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Good with Children: Unknown at present but believed will be fine with older considerate children Good with Dogs: YES Good with Cats: Unknown Adoption Donation: 250.00 IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Interested in a specific dog, please fill out an application if you are interested in a dog.
