Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Honey Bear is an incredibly sweet, playful and charismatic pit bull. She is approximately 11-12 yrs old. She would do great in a house or condo as she has a low energy level and would be fine with a short walk once a day or every other. She has arthritis in her back legs and is on medication. She is dog selective and sometimes reactive towards other dogs on walks. Honey Bear thoroughly enjoys cuddle with her foster family. Honey Bear is 100% kennel trained for when her foster family is at work and does not show any signs of separation anxiety. Honey Bear is also potty trained, but due to her age, she does need to go out more often. When you tell her it's time to 'Go' she gets very excited. Honey Bear knows sit and stay. She is looking forward to playing in a yard of her own. She is full of love and has so much joy to share! Honey Bear is too interested in cats though, so no cats please! ** CONTACT INFO@MYAARF.ORG DIRECTLY IF INTERESTED - THE "ADOPT ME" EMAIL LINK IS BROKEN AND WE ARE NOT RECEIVING THE MESSAGES ** If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! $225 adoption fee applies. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Pharaoh Hound Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pharaoh Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Hurricane Harvey evacuated pup who has a rough start in life without many people taking interest in saving him. But here he is...George is one of the sweetest puppies I've ever met. He is energetic in bursts then needs to sleep for more growing time. We believe when he's full grown he will be 30lbs. George is blind in one eye but it doesn't slow him down. He is very curious about everything but also tends to stay close to either his dog pals or his humans. Unless you are at the dog park and then everyone is his friend. We are working on general manners. He walks well on a leash when alone but when with his dog pack he likes to try to pull ahead to lead the way. And play....george lives to play with other dogs and toys. He's a playful goofy explorer. Everything goes in his mouth because he is checking out this new world. So lots of toys around and monitoring his play to help him choose the right things to chew on (he's doing very well with this in my home). We are working on crate training. At night he does very well sleeping in his crate and will whine/bark to let you know if he needs to go potty. He is young so most nights he needs to get out and pee then he goes back to sleep. During the day he wants to be with you and if crated puts up a big fuss. So we are working on getting him comfortable and feeling safe to be in pen or crate for a couple of hours. George would do best with work from home family or have dog pals or doggy day care. George has hip dysplasia. He's currently getting acupuncture, supplements, rehab exercises and swim therapy to help his hind end get stronger to support his hips. Since he is a smaller dog he is a good candidate for FHO surgery when he turns a year old and is fully grown. AARF is committed to covering the costs of his rehab program and the FHO surgery with our vet. This little guy does very well at the dog park, on walks, playing fetch and climbing up on my couch. After his surgery he will be able to go on 4-5hr hikes with mild elevation gain...followed by a day of rest. He truly is a must meet puppy. As a purely foster based rescue we have no central location at which you can visit our dogs, consequently we only honor meeting requests from preapproved adopters. Please fill in our online application at www.myaarf.org as fully as you can. It won't obligate you to anything or any particular dog but gives us a great place from which to begin the matching process. Please allow 24-48 hours for a response from our busy volunteers. Adoption Fee is $ which includes all transport, vetting (including spay/neuter) and microchipping.

Posted Breed: Rat Terrier. Adoption Fee: 150.00. Sweet little 9 yr old Emma Claire has lost the only home she has every known due to a change in her family's housing situation. She loves her people and would love nothing more than a warm lap to snuggle on. She is healthy, leash, house and crate trained. She is shy at first around new people but warms up quickly with kind gentle treatment. She is understandably confused and bewildered but is doing much better - the first night with her foster she was terrified but slept with her the second night. Emma Claire gets along with some dogs, particularly quiet ones about her size, but she is quite selective so we think she would do best as the only pet. Would be a wonderful dog for an older person/couple who wants a low maintenance snuggle bun.
