Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Honey Bear is an incredibly sweet, playful and charismatic pit bull. She is approximately 11-12 yrs old. She would do great in a house or condo as she has a low energy level and would be fine with a short walk once a day or every other. She has arthritis in her back legs and is on medication. She is dog selective and sometimes reactive towards other dogs on walks. Honey Bear thoroughly enjoys cuddle with her foster family. Honey Bear is 100% kennel trained for when her foster family is at work and does not show any signs of separation anxiety. Honey Bear is also potty trained, but due to her age, she does need to go out more often. When you tell her it's time to 'Go' she gets very excited. Honey Bear knows sit and stay. She is looking forward to playing in a yard of her own. She is full of love and has so much joy to share! Honey Bear is too interested in cats though, so no cats please! ** CONTACT INFO@MYAARF.ORG DIRECTLY IF INTERESTED - THE "ADOPT ME" EMAIL LINK IS BROKEN AND WE ARE NOT RECEIVING THE MESSAGES ** If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! $225 adoption fee applies. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Isaac

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Seahurst, WA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet Isaac, he is an extremely sweet and cuddly young pup, who deserves to find a family who will love on him and teach him humans are usually good people. Once you gain his trust you get to see his amazing personality. He is house trained and will stand by the door when he needs to go out, off leash he listens very well. On leash he doesn't pull and has not had any issues with kids or other animals. He loves to chase balls, he has been working on crate training, and is at the point where he will go in on his own, when he first arrived he did everything he could to stay out of the crate. So progress has been made. He does have some separation anxiety, and would do best with other dogs, and/or an owner that isn't gone very often. Isaac loves going on car rides, and his foster Dad has taken him everywhere he can and will leave the truck running as he patiently waits for me if he cannot go in places. When he arrived he did not like vehicles, was "destructive", and had severe separation anxiety. His foster Dad has worked with close to 100 K9's and did not see these as issues they could not overcome if worked on together. He is very young and these behaviors are typical of a younger puppy that just needs a loving owner and someone to play with. Already he is showing great improvement and is looking for a family willing to continue his training! To sum it all up: Isaac is a friendly boy who likes dogs, cats and children. He is housebroken. He rides well in a car and is working on his crate training. He doesn't like to be left alone or without a K-9 companion and will be a typical destructive puppy if left alone; he can also scale a fence to go look for his people so care must be taken initially when he is outside :) As a purely foster based rescue we have no central location at which you can visit our dogs, consequently we only honor meeting requests from preapproved adopters. Please fill in our online application at www.myaarf.org as fully as you can. It won't obligate you to anything or any particular dog but gives us a great place from which to begin the matching process. Please allow 24-48 hours for a response from our busy volunteers. Adoption Fee is $400 which includes all transport, vetting (including spay/neuter) and microchipping.

      Location: Seahurst, WA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). Herman and his two sisters were found dumped in a road ditch during heavy rains in Texas. Sadly as the rescuer tried to gather up the puppies one was hit by a car and didn't make it- Herman was one of the lucky ones! All the puppies were suffering from mange, a severe bacterial infection, exposure, malnutrition and internal parasites. Thankfully they were immediately seen by a vet and all these issues have now been resolved. Herman's sisters have all found families of their own, now it's his turn! Herman is a typical fun loving puppy who loves to play with other dogs and is very friendly with people. He can be cautious with strangers on first introduction but it doesn't take long for him to warm up- he's not an "in your face" kinda guy and whilst active isn't hyper as you might expect from his border collie mix. He currently shares his outdoor kennel in Louisiana with another puppy-so would love a companion to play with and is scheduled to join us in Seattle towards the end of April. Whilst he isn't house trained he is smart and uses one area of his kennel to potty so we think he will get the hang of things very quickly once he arrives. As with all our puppies we require completion of obedience training on adoption- being a lab/collie mix Herman especially will benefit from having jobs to do to keep him out of trouble. A tired dog is a good dog! A bored dog will find his own fun..... consequently we believe in crate training so our puppies are safe when left home alone and so they cannot get themselves into any trouble! As he is so attentive to his people Herman is going to learn fast and may even enjoy agility training later on! Herman is currently great with all dogs though he may play a little rough for a toy breed. He is fairly quiet unless he is lonely or hungry and then will speak up to let you know. Whilst he hasn't yet been around cats or children we think he will do ok with both as we cannot imagine him meeting something or someone he cannot love! Do you think you might have the time and love to devote to this sweet boy? If so please read on for info on how to apply to be his family... Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Are you looking for a fun loving younger dog to join your family? Then look no further because sweet Princess is the pup for you. As she is a bit of a wiggle worm she is difficult to take photos of so don't be deceived by these shots, in person she is gorgeous! At about 18 months young Princess is still very much a puppy who will need further training but her foster Dad has been working on some basics with her and she is learning fast. We believe in telling our adopters the truth so here it is, her worst habit is affectionately greeting you with exuberant hugs! She just cannot contain her excitement and will jump up lovingly to give you a cuddle- younger children might find this a little overwhelming but let's talk if they are a part of your family already :) Princess loves her cuddles and is unaware of her 40lb size - let's not make her body conscious and find her a family that is happy with a medium sized lap dog! She loves the outdoors and is always ready for an adventure or two. Do you run or hike? Need a buddy? Then this is your match for sure :) Princess has never been around cats and is good with other dogs with proper introduction. She can be a little bossy so might be best with a more submissive partner personality. Princess will be joining us from Louisiana around the 18/19th April. If you would like to chat with her foster Dad let us know! If Princess seems like the right pup for you please read on for how to apply! Toto

      Breed: Shih Tzu-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Seahurst, WA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Toto is a sweet boy who has a very playful, terrier type personality. He loves people and other dogs. Has been around one cat which he ignored. This little guy belonged to an elderly lady whose house flooded. She was evacuated against her will and her dogs were left to fend for themselves. The dogs found high ground where they took refuge, and when the water went down, neighbors began feeding them. The original owner was unable to return to her home because of the flood damage and no one ever returned for the dogs. When the situation was discovered, different rescues took in the abandoned pets. When we first received little Toto he was suffering from malnutrition, severe digestive upset, and pancreatitis which our vet said was a result of eating fatty table scraps that the neighbors had fed him. He has recovered fully and is very healthy. Despite his ordeal, his temperment has always been unfailingly cheerful. He has lived indoors at since he came into rescue and has gotten along great with John's personal pets. Toto is super cute, just a really nice little dog. Toto is HEARTWORM NEGATIVE and fully vetted. He is mostly housetrained, used to living indoors and going out into the fenced yard (off leash) to potty. But if he needs to go and does not get taken out immediately, he will soil the floor. I also think that when he goes out into the fenced yard with the other dogs, he gets busy playing and forgets to potty. I think the use of a crate and a regular schedule would greatly benefit him. Toto either needs a fenced in yard or someone who will play with him and see to it that he gets regular exercise and play time. He is not a couch potato but on the other hand he is not real hyper. If he is let out into a fenced yard for exercise, I recommend a 5 foot fence because he is very bouncy and could jump a low fence. Toto does bark when the other house dogs bark and he tends to bark when he is bored and lonely. I would not say he barks excessively. He walks fairly well on a leash but he does need some leash training. He is little and quick and can slip a collar pretty easily so you have to be careful leash walking him if he tries to back out of his collar. He does OK in a crate. No real problem riding but he should probably ride crated or you will have him bouncing all over the car just because he is young and playful. He would probably ride well in someone's lap, though. He loves attention. I have never tried him around water so I don't know if he swims, He is affectionate, kind of goofy, bouncy, good natured, and seems very intelligent. Have never had him around kids but he would probably be fine. He has never shown the slightest bit of aggression or tendency to be snippy. I think he would get along with most anybody. He would enjoy a companion dog to play with but its not a necessity. He would be fine in an apartment unless he barked too much, He shares a house here with several other dogs who are rather noisy and when they bark, he barks. He might be much quieter with fewer/quieter dogs. If he sounds lie a match for you please read on for how to apply! Posted Breed: Hound / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). If you are looking for a companion that would like nothing more than to watch movies with you, go for walks, car rides and be by your side, Sam may be the perfect canditate for you! Sam is a gentle giant, he loves people and gets along well with all dogs. He is very laid back and if he can't be on your lap he likes to be as close as possible. He loves to "go with" and rides well in a vehicle. He will stand there forever and let you brush him and loves to be bathed. He does chase cats so a cat free household would be the best for him (and the cat). Sam was rescued from a high kill shelter in Louisiana and is currently in a foster home. As a purely foster based rescue we have no central location at which you can visit our dogs, consequently we only honor meeting requests from preapproved adopters. You are welcome to fill in our online application at www.myaarf.org; please fill this in as fully as you can.
