Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). BEAUTIFUL BLUE PIT NEEDS A LOVING HOME. This gorgeous fellow was rescued by a caring individual who is looking to place him in a loving home where he will be safe and treated like a family member. Buddy Blue is a young adult – maybe two years old. His rescuer has had him neutered and vaccinated. He also tested negative for heartworms. Blue wants to be a house dog and does pretty well potty-wise when he is inside. Crating him when not supervised should complete the process. He’s playful with other dogs his size or larger, but is NOT cat-safe (and therefore should not be placed with smaller dogs, either). He is very friendly with adult men and women, but HIS RESCUER DOES NOT KNOW HOW HE REACTS TO CHILDREN. Blue is fairly high energy, so his adopter should be prepared to give him lots of exercise. His rescuer is looking for someone with a securely fenced yard with a fence at least 5 feet high. No cable runs or chaining! This dog is currently located in Kershaw County, SC. An adoption fee to help offset his vet costs is requested. For more information, please call 843-334-6565. Leave a message with your phone number if there is no answer.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat). ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS! Meet GEMMA, an adorable mix of Chihuahua, dachshund and yorkie. Born in mid-June, this tiny pup weighs about 6 lbs. She’s now the perfect age to start crate-training as the first step toward house training, but must have potty breaks every 3 to 4 hours. She’s also a little shy, so needs lots of attention and exposure to new people, places and situations to help her become a well rounded adult dog. For that reason, we’re looking for a home where one of the adults doesn’t work or works only part-time; where the adults work different shifts, or there’s a retiree in the household. If you have the time, love and patience for this little love bug, please apply online at our website: www.savethestrays.org. Adoption fee: $225. Please note: we don’t adopt young puppies to households with children under the age of 7.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). MORE BOUNCE TO THE OUNCE! Meet AINSLEY, an adorable mix of dachshund and chihuahua. Born at the end of March, this outgoing little pup now weighs about 8 lbs. and will likely weigh no more than 10 lbs. at maturity. He has started crate-training as the first step toward house training, and most nights he sleeps through the night without an accident. But during the day, he still needs potty breaks every 4 hours or so. He’s also a little shy, so needs lots of attention and exposure to new people, places and situations to help him become a well rounded adult dog. For these reasons, we’re looking for a home where one of the adults doesn’t work or works only part-time; where the adults work different shifts, or there’s a retiree in the household. Posted Breed: Pug (short coat). Hi, I’m MILO. I came to Save the Strays because my owner lost his home and couldn’t take care of me any longer. I have a few miles on me: I'm 7 or 8 years old and don’t see as well as I used to. I also have trouble controlling my rear legs (and sometimes my bowels) because I have spondylitis between two of my thoracic vertebrae. But the good folks at Save the Strays have given me a lot of care to help me get better, including good nutrition, neutering, getting my teeth cleaned and some kind of injections to help me walk a little better. They're also getting me some leg braces to help me walk better. Surely someone out there can look beyond my deficits and see me for what I am and what I can offer. I’m a good companion who will follow you everywhere, even if I do wobble getting there. I just want to love somebody and be loved back. My adoption fee is just $75. Won’t you please apply for me online at www.savethestrays.org? Or email my foster mom at info@savethestrays.org if you have any questions.

Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, there! My name is SNICKERS. I’m a 3-year-old chocolate lab/pit bull mix and a little bit of a goofball. I dance and wiggle every time someone pays attention to me. I keep hoping someone will make me part of their family - spend time walking and playing with me and include me in their activities. I’m pretty energetic, so it would be great if my adopters were active, too. Because I crave attention, I would be happiest as an only dog. I’m told I’m heartworm positive, but I don’t have any clinical signs, so I had the “slow kill” treatment which lets me lead a normally active life. My adoption fee is just $150. Questions? Email info@savethestrays.org. Ready to apply for me? Use the application online at www.savethestrays.org.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) / Mixed (short coat). Hey, everybody, my name is Blanca, and I’m a 2-year-old Jack/Parson Russell terrier mix. I’m friendly and love treats and being petted and hugged. If you’re the active sort, I’m energetic, but not off the wall. I'm also house trained and good on leash. And cute! Don’t forget that! I’m told I’m heartworm positive, but I don’t have any clinical signs so I have been treated with the “slow kill” method. I can lead a normally active life and need nothing more than monthly heartworm prevention now, just like any other dog. I’m bunking at my foster mom’s house right now, but hoping someone will adopt me and give me a real fur-ever home with my very own family. I don’t take up much space, and I don’t eat a lot. My adoption fee is just $150. So pleeeeeze apply for me at www.savethestrays.org today!

Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Turbo is an older min-pin mix who still has lots of life in him and enjoys walks and loves to ride in the car. He's also content to sunbathe outside for a while or nap on the couch. He enjoys a bit of attention (petting, ear scratches, gentle holding), but isn’t demanding of your time. Turbo had some bad experiences with children before coming to our rescue, so he needs a quiet home with adults only. Apply using the online application at www.savethestrays.org if you would like to give this little guy a loving home. Or email info@savethestrays.org if you have questions. Turbo's adoption fee is just $75.
