More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

What is coffee colored with caramel stripes all over and intoxicatingly beautiful? Answer: Why me, Kahlua, of course! I was adopted a year and a half ago and thought I had a forever family, but they eventually quit paying attention to me and I got bored and started jumping the fence. The real problem started when the old cat next door started calling me names...needless to say, I chomped him and the neighbor said if I didn't leave the hood, he was going to send me over the rainbow bridge. I'm too young for that so here I sit, at the pound waiting for another family. One that has time to spend with me, please. Probably not one with cats. Call 918.706.1073 so we can go trick or treating together! To inquire about this dog, please call Nancy at 918/706-1073. We do require that an application be filled out & considered. Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Chouteau Pound Pals www.ChouteauPoundPals.com Chouteau Pound Pals is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. We have a new tenant at the pound. Meet Duke, he is approx 2 years of age and most likely a Heeler mix...which means he has more energy than a toddler with Monster in his sippy cup. He is potty trained and seems super social! He would thrive in a home with someone that has time to spend with him, he is smart and a fast learner but his personality is easily bored and that means that mischief is an issue when left alone for long periods of time. Call 918.706.1073 if you have the time and desire to bring out the best in this handsome boy! To inquire about this dog, please call Nancy at 918/706-1073. Rudolph here, if you can't guess why I was so named, let me clue you in...I came to the pound right before Christmas and I'm somewhat red! I'm 2-3 years old and love people and dogs. I am pretty athletic and can scale a 6' chain link fence, so the volunteers here say I need a family that can keep me inside or a yard with privacy fencing. But, you know, if I had a family that loved and spent a lot of time with me, I might not want to leave... I just get bored and enjoy a jaunt every now and again. Call 918.706.1073 and tell them that Christmas is coming early this year! To inquire about this dog, please call Nancy at 918/706-1073. We do require that an application be filled out & considered.
