Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). My name is zzCecily and I love to give and receive attention. If you let me, I love to sit in your lap and sleep in your bed. But I know I can't always do that so I don't mind if I have to sleep in a dog bed with the other dogs on the floor. I'm a young girl with young girl energy and I really like to play with the other dogs at my foster house. A home with another doggie companion would be great for me. I also love kids, and I'm learning to keep all four feet on the ground when I play with them. I am about a year old and weigh less than 50 pounds. There has been so much to learn about living in a house, but my foster family is teaching me all kinds of neat things like how to use a doggy door and how to know when it is time to play and when it is time to relax. I can't wait to meet you and show you how sweet I am!If you have any questions about me please contact uncagedwoman@gmail.com Disclaimer: This dog is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by the foster, not by Paws in the City. A $200 adoption fee is due at the time of adoption and will go to the foster. More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). zzStar is a small American Staffordshire mix rescued from being euthanized at a facility in Smith County, TX, but now her rescuers need to find her a loving forever home! She is a happy-go-lucky girl with a sweet and loving disposition. She gets along great with other dogs and enjoys a good romp and wrestle. She would do best with dogs of her own size or larger, because she doesn’t quite realize her size and can be a little rough with smaller dogs. She definitely thinks she is a lap dog and LOVES to snuggle. Star is quite the lovebug and just wants to make her humans happy. She is 90% house-trained but has an accident every once and a while. As long as she is taken out every few hours, she is fine. Star has not been around children, but I feel like she would love them. It would be better if they were big enough to defend themselves from potential jumping. She is crate trained and is crated during the day when we are at work and sleeps in our room in a crate at night. She readily gets in her crate when told. The only behavioral issues Star exhibits is jumping, leash pulling and a bit of rambunctiousness which is to be expected from a young pup. She really just needs a bit of professional training, and then she will be good to go! Star weighs approximately 45 lbs and is about one year old. She is such a beautiful girl and cannot wait to find her forever home! She gets along great with kids especially her Foster Mom's "Terrible 2" toddler! She loves spending time in her crate and whines at the door when she has to go out. She still has some manners to learn after being out on the streets for so long but listens when she is corrected. Bonnie is still learning how to play and gets excited like a puppy. She responds positively to any type of training when treats are involved. Bonnie is full of love and is an amazing dog despite all of the hardships she went through. Weight: 48 lbs. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Border Collie Mix

      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). zzDaisy is about a year and a half old Pitt mix, possibly part Border Collie and Boxer and weighs about 50 lbs. She’s a bit of a shy girl but very sweet and warms up to new people quickly, then wants to get in close and give kisses. She is housetrained and has excellent indoor manners, just lays down near her people and waits for belly rubs and head pats. Daisy does not get along with cats so she would do best in a home without kitties. She is otherwise 100% passive, gentle, and non-aggressive. I haven’t seen her play with other dogs yet so not sure how she would do in a home with other dogs. We have a couple doggie play dates lined up so I’ll report back after these interactions. She’s done great with dogs we’ve passed on our walks so I think she would do just fine. She seemed curious but remained calm and showed no signs of dominance/aggression. We are currently working on leash training and a few general doggie manners but she is already a pretty well-behaved girl. She does jump occasionally if excited but is overall, a pretty mellow pup. zzDaisy is spayed, up-to-date on all of her shots, and also heartworm negative. She is also currently on heartworm and flea preventatives. She likes toys but the tougher, more resilient toys like Kongs or rawhides will last the longest with her. She likes to pull the stuffing out of the squeaky toys and then she’s done with them. She is good around children over the age of about 5 but I’m not sure how she would act around toddlers. She is a bit timid and very sensitive, though not hand-shy at all (I think she was scolded often by her previous owner). I assume she would think she was being scolded if a younger child slapped at her, pulled her tail, or playfully shrieked at her, though I don’t think she would attack, just slink off to another part of the house upset with her tail between her legs. I believe the timidness will tone down after a little more socializing and after she builds up trust and security with her new humans, and that she’ll be a wonderful edition to someone’s family. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi! My name is Bodhi. I am about 2.5 years old. Last time I weighed myself, I was about 55 pounds. I am currently being fostered in a home with a toddler, and nine-year-old and two cats. There is also another dog…things went really well for a while but, we stopped getting along. We have some drama. My foster parents would love to keep me but, they don’t want us to argue around the kiddos. I totally get it. We are big guys. I would love to find a fur-ever home with someone who doesn’t have another dog. I do love kids though; I wouldn’t mind that at all. I can get used to cats if you introduce us properly. I am crate trained, house trained, neutered, micro-chipped and my shots are up-to-date. I sit and stay and go right to my bed, when asked. I LOVE to go for long walks. I use a gentle leader and sometimes wear a backpack. Jogging is my favorite. I move like a gazelle! I have a big back yard at my current home so, if you have one too, that would be awesome!! Oh, and I love to chase that red dot…I thinks it’s for the cats but, they don’t care about it. Things you should know. I get carsick. I usually get sick once and then I am fine after that. I try to hold it but it always happens when I’m about a block away from my destination. My foster mom just brings a towel in the car; she thinks it’s kind of funny. Shirley is a 1 year old female Beagle mix (approximately 50 lbs.) spayed, house trained, crate trained, knows some basic commands, up to date with the vet, and is full of love! She is patient, sweet, gentle, and enjoys going on walks but is even happier snuggling you on the couch. Shirley has had a hard life so far-her owners are going through a divorce and the husband thought neglecting this sweet girl would be a good way to get back at his soon to be ex wife. Shirley lived outside 24/7 (rain or shine) in a cage full of feces, mud, and filthy blankets. She was rarely fed or even given water. Although she has had a terrible start at life you would never know from her sweet, loving demeanor. Shirley is great with other dogs and kids and would make the perfect pet for anyone with a loving home that's missing that final piece of the family. Posted Breed: Doberman Pinscher / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Buddy has been through a lot since he was rescued at White Rock Lake by a nice couple . They tried to find someone to take him without much luck and ended up at their Mom's house in Dallas. He was doing fine although not getting enough attention . Unfortunately the next door neighbors are backyard breeding- and one of them attacked Buddy through the fence and he almost lost his foot. He was recovering in the couple's bedroom but they knew they needed a better place for him... that's when we stepped in. No other rescues in Dallas responded to their pleas. We are all so full...but sometimes you just have to make room. He is at the rescue now. He is over his shyness, might be a little slow to trust , but once he knows you he is a doll...he loves to play tug a war with a rope toy, plays with a football, loves to walk on a leash and go in our woods to play. He is a great dog, and will be a terrific protector of his home and family. He likes to protect his food but was said to be living with a Yorkie. Just separate feed bowls and supervision will control the situation. He would do well with some obedience training, but he is a big puppy at about one year old with lots of energy and gives sweet kisses, too. If you think Buddy might fit well into your household, please go to: http://www.pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm "Buddy is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so his ongoing care and custody are provided by his foster, not by Paws in the City."

Ross is good-natured, great with people and with some dogs. He shows a lot of curious energy toward cats. We are working on that, but would not recommend him for a home with cats at this time. Ross is house-trained and crate-trained. He is also great walking on a leash, rides well in a car and knows "Sit" and "Wait" commands. He loves to play and likes to roll on his back and have his belly scratched! Ross is eager to be a part of a loving family of active adults or adults with older children. He says he is seeking to be with someone who will take him on walks and hikes and play with him. He would not be happy just parked in a yard like yard art! Ross has a spotted white coat with brown accents and golden eyes and weighs over 50 pounds. He is currently in foster care in west Texas but is available to travel. DISCLOSURE: Ross is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so his/her ongoing care and custody are provided by her foster, not by Paws in the City.
