Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Yuma is a joy to have around.  She gets really excited to meet people (her second favorite thing behind toys). But she's been learning that it's much more polite to lie down and wait for people to come down to her than to jump up and greet them. Politeness gets you lots of tummy rubs and back scratches, and that's all Yuma wants in life (and maybe a few appropriate toys). Born in 2008, Yuma is bright and healthy, but with some sensitivity to the sun. She doesn't do well with other dogs, so is looking to be your one and only. She is very gentle and calm in a home setting. She knows tons of cool tricks and is always ready for something new! As part of our Single* pets adoption special, Yuma qualifies for free adoption and a free flight to her new home! *Single pets do best as the only pet in the home.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Express wants to do exactly what her name says: express her love to you. She is a real sweetheart and a mellow girl who enjoys the simple things in life: going for a nice walk, sniffing a good smell, being brushed, getting belly rubs, lounging in the sun and taking naps on a soft, cushy bed. Express does have a few sensitivities. She doesn't like other dogs around her while she is eating her meals. She prefers to dine alone, or she will guard her food. She would be perfectly fine as an only pet, but when it comes to canine companions she does best with dogs who give her space and who are okay with her bossy ways (she's a lady who knows what she wants). Express passed a cat encounter at the Sanctuary. Express is fearful of medical handling and can be defensive in those situations. She is totally fine with non-medical handling, though, and enjoys being petted. Express was born in 2006, and is looking for a loving home where she can enjoy her golden years.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). When Romo's person passed away, he was left behind with no place to go. Romo is selective about his human friends and sometimes takes a little extra time to get to know you. But once he does, he will latch onto you as though he's afraid you might disappear like his mom did. Romo was born in 2005, and he really loves people, though he needs a little work on his manners. His favorite activities include playing with toys and going to the dog park to play with more toys. He's very affectionate, and craves attention and excitement. Romo does need to be an only dog and hopes you don't mind. He also has serious back leg issues, having cruciate surgery on both legs, and they are painful and not in great shape. His memories take him back to the days of having a home sometimes. He wishes he could be there again. Do you think he could be yours? Romo is part of our Single Pets* program! That means that he is eligible for a free flight home and waived adoption fee!*Single pets do best as the only dog or cat in the home.

      Shocky

      Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (short coat). Shocky can be a handful, but she's full of fun and joy, and she just needs someone to share it all with! Shocky really needs some stability in life, too. She was rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as a little puppy. Somebody adopted her immediately, and then gave her up! Next, she went to a rescue group, and then, well, this girl has just had no earth under her feet. She needs a really dog-savvy handler to keep her from redirecting or snapping in stressful situations. She loves to be petted and cuddled, but not on her hips, which are starting to hurt these days. Shocky knows 'sit' and she comes when you call her. She can be a little hit-or-miss with other dogs. But she's a happy girl who needs some stability, and who really needs a place she can finally call home. Shocky is part of our Single Pets* program! That means that she is eligible for a free flight home and waived adoption fee! *Single pets do best as the only dog or cat in the home.

And since he loves exercise and he's intelligent, he'd be great at learning tricks. He gets very excited when he sees people he knows. He enjoys car rides, giving kisses, and spending time with his favorite people. He would prefer to be an only dog in a home that has a tall fence, as he has the ability to jump very high. If you have those accommodations, Tiki would love for you to be his favorite person. Tiki is part of our Single Pets* program! Breed: Anatolian Shepherd
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Anatolian Shepherd (short coat). Tarlton had a rough life before he came to Best Friends. He was named for the construction yard where he was found. Perhaps because of something in his rugged past, he shows some guard dog behavior. He needs a slow introduction to new people, but once he gets to know them, Tarlton becomes the most affectionate dog. He loves to give slobbery kisses and to climb in people's laps, even though he really doesn't fit. Tarlton was born in 2006 and is on a special diet for allergies. He knows tricks like 'roll over,' 'twirl' and 'crawl.' He's a world-class cuddler and bed-hog, though he also enjoys long walks. Tarlton will make an amazing friend for a dog-savvy person who can give him a little guidance. He's a sensitive guy who craves love, and he can't wait to give his heart to someone special. Tarlton is part of our Single Pets* program! That means that he is eligible for a free flight home and waived adoption fee! *Single pets do best as the only dog or cat in the home.

      Sex: Female Female

Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). She could either be totally attentive or daydreaming. Who can tell by those ears? Actually, Joy offers the best of both worlds! Her attentive side is eager to please people. She already knows sit, stay, down and come. All she wants in return are love and tummy rubs, which bring us to - her dreamy side! Those belly scratches send her right into a fantasy world. Those eyes are usually laser-focused, but you can just see her zone out under the spell of your touch. Her dreams are filled with wishes for love and belly rubs from a person of her very own. Joy has Babesia, a blood disorder usually picked up from a tick bite. Because it can be transmitted among dogs, Joy must be an only child. But she's ready and willing to give you as much love as an entire pack! Born in 2006, this smart, outgoing gal also loves to run and play. Everyone needs more joy in their life; how about bringing this Joy into yours? Joy has a generous sponsor who will pay for the transportation costs to her new home.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This girl doesn't need any fancy athletic shoes. She can get air all on her own! We mean serious air - about six feet of it! She is athletic and probably a Frisbee champ in the making. As you approach her, you can see her bounding into the air, well over your head (unless you're really tall). But when you get closer, she presses her little face into her gate to try and snuggle. You can't help but smile! She was born in December 2009. Sneaker gets along great with all of the other dogs she's met. And she just loves people. She'll need a high fence and someone who can help her use up some of that energy. If you've ever wanted to try Frisbee, but worried you couldn't keep up, Sneaker is your girl. She'll do all the work! All you have to do is love her. Sneaker is part of our Single Pets* program! That means that she is eligible for a free flight home and waived adoption fee! *Single pets do best as the only dog or cat in the home.
