Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This elfin-dog is Pumba! He came to us from an over-crowded rural shelter who badly wanted to see this little guy get out and into a safe spot and good home. He’s young and has a lot of energy, so daily walks or runs or even teaching him fetch would be great. He’s very silly, social and would love to have someone work with him on basic training. He’ll likely pay you back in tiny curly-Q tail wiggles.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Maggie

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Maggie was abandoned in her own backyard. Her owner went to jail leaving no one to care for her. Luckily, concerned neighbors stepped in and a fellow rescuer who lived nearby went to meet Maggie. She took her home for a day and watched her interact with her dogs and cats. She was open to her new doggy friends and curious and gentle with the cats. These two things alone can open so many doors for a rescue dog so we agreed to take her into our program. After a trip to the vet, we were told she had heartworms which means she had been living outside for the majority of her life. Despite this, Maggie is a loving and snuggly girl living with two other female dogs and the resident cat. She's not a very big girl so if petite and cuddly is your thing, Maggie is the perfect girl for you!!!

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). We are welcoming Harlem (originally known as Gypsy) back to MABBR. She was originally adopted out in 2011 when she was 12 weeks old. Due to a divorce in the family, they were no longer able to keep her. Mellie, a former MABBR alumni and Harlem’s mom, have been reunited after 4 years. This is what we know about Harlem so far: She is beautiful! Incredibly sweet. Loves car rides. She is outstanding on her leash. She does not pull at all and even looks back at you while she is walking – we love that. Harlem received a lot of attention while we were walking and greeted everyone, including small children, very well. Harlem lived with six children, the youngest being two years old. Harlem’s former family says she does well with the kids and that they trusted her with them and don’t worry about her being snippy or corrective. We will update as we get to know our girl again.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Nala!!! A beautiful girl with lots of energy and lots of love to give. She lives in a home with 5 kids and she does great with them. She’s a tiny girl, about 2 years old but looks like a puppy. She was saved from a bad situation by a kind neighbor. She had developed a serious infection in her uterus and her family refused to take her to the vet. They wanted to breed her and made several attempts. The only outcome of those attempts was an infection that would have killed her had the neighbor not stepped in and urged them to surrender her so she could get the vet care she needed. The vet who treated her said the infection (called pyometra) was so advanced that she would have been dead within a few days. Nala is now healthy and ready for her forever home.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I got adopted by a really nice guy back in 2007. But because of hard times, he felt it was in my best interest to return me to MABBR. Luckily, there was a foster home waiting for me and now I live with 3 other dogs. I didn’t get a lot of time with other dogs as I was growing up so my friend skills need work. I want to be friends but I’m just not sure how to go about it. It didn’t take us long to figure out how this little guy pulled the heartstrings of the ones who work with so many dogs that have so little time. He is a charmer. He is an active man and loves to snuggle. He’s a talker and loves to play with his toys. But mostly he thinks he’s a big lap dog. He’s got some minor skin issues that we’re working on but other than that, he’s a healthy 10 year old kid. Nugs walks well on leash and has been outstanding at the events he has attended.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Louise (along with 8 other babies) was born on May 25, 2014. MABBR was asked to take 6 of these little darlings by a fellow rescuer, and once we saw their pictures and heard their story, it was hard to say no. Louise has really blossomed into a fun and spunky young pup. She loves going for walks, playing with her foster siblings, and napping on the couch. Louise is food motivated and a quick learner. She already has several basic obedience commands under her belt! Louise is kid-friendly, housebroken, crate-trained, fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped.

He’s so grateful to be out of the heat without food and water, and is now safe, but needs a foster to learn how to be a companion dog. He’s around a year old, very sweet, social and absolutely stunning.

      Daltrey

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Daltrey is 2 year old pit bull. He is a sweet and beautiful boy. He’s full of vinegar and has lots of energy to burn off… lol. His foster mom adores him. He adjusted well to his new schedule. He stays in a large kennel while she is at work, and goes in without any problems. He has not had 1 accident in the house. Holds his potty great. He is learning to walk well on a leash, but the darn squirrels are driving him crazy. He can’t go on a walk without everyone wanting to meet him and tell foster mom what a beautiful dog he is. He seems to be more calm around females. He thinks men are to play rough with. He is VERY food motivated. Loves treats, raw hides, ropes, balls and deer antlers. He has learned to sit, shake both paws, down. We are currently working on stay. He loves other dogs, has been good with both male and female that are spayed and neutered. He hasn’t been introduced to unaltered dogs yet. He is still just a big kid and likes to run after being in the kennel all day. He leaps like a deer and sometimes prances like a horse. He will jump a 4 foot fence when he sees other dogs and wants to go socialize so he will require either a privacy fence or being taken out to potty on a leash. He still gets very excited when company comes, but settles down after a bit. He has been around toddlers but that crazy tail wags and is a bit rough on the little ones. Daltrey is still a work in progress but it won’t be long before he’s ready for a family to call his own.
