Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). DOMINO is a wonderful young male Pitbull, in his prime and loaded with potential. His first Pen Pal raised her young daughter as one of Domino’s good friends, visiting him often. He showcased his gentle nature with this baby-turned-toddler, and his interest to plug in to a family. His first Pen Pal was relocated out of state, and his new Pen Pal took him to obedience class - he did absolutely great! He continues to excel with a blast of exercise to unwind, followed by asking him to do… well, anything! He’s very bright and interested to work cooperatively. Domino can be paired with a laid-back female or would love to be an only kid & soak up all the lovin’. Not cat compatible. Domino has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and is ready to join your family. Apply at www.companimals.org. Adoption $165

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Leroy

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Bulldog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Landenberg, PA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). LEROY, above all the other animals in our care, embodies the spirit of CompAnimals Pet Rescue and the level of commitment we give to our animals for their entire lives. Here is his story: About 8 years ago I got a call from a senior citizen who was trying to catch a stray pit bull in her neighborhood in Elkton. The dog would follow children around but eluded adults. She was worried the SPCA would pick him up and euthanize him. The Cecil Co SPCA had a "no pit bulls" policy at the time. So for 3 weeks I tried to catch him, make friends with him, bribe him and for 3 weeks the SPCA was bent on catching him as well. Luckily, with the help of a butcher (who lived in the same neighborhood and had been giving him fresh beef) I was able to capture him. He was super friendly and hopped right in my car. We had him vetted and aside from a hairless patch on the top of his head he recovered from his ordeal pretty quickly. I fostered him myself. He had a distinct hate of cats and for that reason I wasn't able to keep him permanently. He did get along with other dogs and was a well mannered guest. It was probably a year or so before he found his "forever" home. Leroy seemed to have lucked out - he had a boy of his own and a big grassy yard. We didn't hear much from him after the initial settling in. There were other dogs to rescue and Leroy was starting his new life. Fast forward about 4 years - tragedy struck and Leroy's family fell apart. His mom was sick, the house was in foreclosure, Leroy was living in an empty house. We got a call that the family could no longer care for him. Leroy came back. Due to the family's lack of finances and the stress of it all, Leroy was in horrible shape. His skin condition which, looking back through vet records, had never been fully addressed. He was bald, scabby, bloody and thin. His head was sunken in. His hair loss was so great that you couldn't even distinguish what color he was. He wagged his tail. Antibiotics and prednisone kicked back the skin a notch but again it never fully recovered. He developed demodex, a type of mange, due to the pred suppressing his immune system. We sent him to a foster home hoping to boost his spirits and give him more 1-on-1 care. Another vet was added to his repertoire. More antibiotics, supplements, shampoos but still his skin was slow to recover. Some prickly hair poked through but not as much as we had hoped for. He developed a sore on his ear and one on his toe which was so painful he didn't want to walk. A culture was done and revealed not one, but 3, drug resistant bacteria. One was resistant to ALL antibiotics. The drugs that we had been giving him were slowly killing him. Fast forward to a year ago, stopped all Western medicine and enlisted the help of Always Helpful Veterinary Services & Dr Judith Shoemaker. To first visit was hours long as she worked up a plan and refining if supplements, powders and remedies. I noticed her lack of concern at the "flesh eating bacteria" - a condition so bad that one vet wanted to amputate part of his ear and toe and another felt it was hopeless and he should be euthanized. She was most concerned with his painful eyes. He has a condition called entropean where the eyelids roll in and the leashes rub against the eye. Leroy responded quickly under the watchful eye of Dr Shoemaker. His coat came in glossy and now covers about 2/3 of his body. His skin still has flare ups but not more drug resistant bacteria. He was tested for food allergies and put in an appropriate diet. To someone meeting Leroy today, for the first time, he looks like a wreck - like he was just rescued. But to those of us who have seen him in the road to recovery, he looks beautiful. Leroy has a pan pal who he's him out every week for his medicated bath and some R&R. This same wonderful pen pal is covering most of his medical expenses (thankfully Always Helpful has a monthly payment plan!). She has offered to continue with his support even after he is adopted. Leroy is now pushing 10 years of age. We would love for him to find his special home but if not, he is welcome to live his life out with us. Somewhere along the line he decided he didn't want to get along with other dogs - his Dr thinks it is because he felt so crappy. He has never lost his love of people - especially children. Leroy adopted kids! He is currently getting a break from shelter life and is in a "vacation" foster home for a few weeks. Check out the video his foster mom made for him. If you can be Leroy's guardian angel please fill out an application at www.companimals.org

      Age: Young
      Location: Landenberg, PA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We found MISSY at a city shelter where she was being treated for chemical burns and a laceration. She is healing well on the outside and, aside from being shy, especially around men, she is healing on the inside too. Missy is young - just under a year old - and still a puppy at heart. She loves to play! Good with other dogs. Missy will be available soon - after her spay surgery. She has been vaccinated and will be micrichippes and tested for heartworm as well. Missy is gaining confidence every day in her foster home. If you are interested in meeting/adopting please fill out an application at www.companimals.org. Adoption $200.

Don't let the gray muzzle fool you - this guy can go! Looking for an active family that will take him on adventures. Rock seems best with dogs his own size or would be fine as an only dog so he could soak up all the love and attention. Not cat compatible. At 18 lbs he is a great, portable size. He loves kids and hiking adventures! He also loves to chase critters so a fenced yard is a must. Rock has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and is ready to go home with you! Adoption $165. Please fill out an application at www.companimals.org if you can give Rock a fur-ever home.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). TWINKLE TOES is a lovely lady of 3 years of age. She still has puppy playfulness but settles down nicely for couch potato time. Twinkle was neglected in her previous life and would love a fur-ever home where she is considered an integral part of the family. Very sweet! Likes to play with other dogs but would be best paired with a Dog with similar energy. Gets along great with her foster family's dog, a 3 yr old male mix. Twinkle has been spayed and vaccinated and will be micrichippes and heartworm tested prior to adoption. Twink is in a foster home so we ask that you fill out an application at www.companimals.org prior to setting up a meet & greet. Adoption $200.

Posted Breed: Pekingese (long coat). APOLLO is a 3 yr old Pekingese with emotional issues who joined us from the DE SPCA recently. At the SPCA he was showing anxiety by attacking his tail. This appears to be more than just "kennel stress" as he has continued this behavior in his foster home, especially if over stimulated. Apollo was seen at Crest View Animal Clinic, LLC and diagnoses with OCD behavior. We have started him in Clomacalm to "take the edge off" while we work in desensitizing him to the things that he over-reacts to. Apollo is good with other dogs although he dies guard his possessions so he would do best with a laid back canine companion he loves going for walks and "keeping him tired" is one if the Dr.'s orders! Apollo is considered "special needs" and will be available to a family who can continue to work with him. We have high hopes for this guy and will keep you updated on his progress! Apollo has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested (neg) for heartworms. Adoption $100. Due to his "issues" we will only adopt Apollo out locally so that we can be supportive in his care.

He is always happy although sometimes we think the lightbulb is on but nobody's home. Approx 8 yrs old and 45 lbs, Oliver was originally found as a stray. We believe he is a mix of Pit Bull and Bull Terrier. He is a happy guy who loves life & has a big smile! Oliver will be a good friend and companion. Gets along with a lot of dogs but lacks doggie social skills so is best placed with a tolerant dog - currently Jada is his playmate at our adoption center. Oliver LOVES to play ball, go for hikes & rides in the car. Oliver is neutered, chipped, vaccinated & on HW prevention. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). SISSY is a young Pit mix who was found as a stray in Cecil Co. The SPCA there will not put Pit Bull up for adoption so her good samaritan rescuer brought her to us rather than have her face certain death. We are not sure if she was neglected or on the run for some time but she came in very thin. We are still getting to know here but this is what her foster Mom says so far: "Sissy is very sweet, the tail never stops wagging. She will not make eye contact with you, and keeps her head down while you pet her (wagging the whole time). She went right into the crate last night and layed down. She was unsure if she was allowed to come out when the door was open. Shaun left the crate door open all night, but she stayed in it. She's in his room in the basement, and she has full run of the room, but seems to go back to the crate when no one is around. She appears to be housebroken, no accidents and she always goes as soon as we take her out.. She is a little lovebug- just burries her head in your lap & wags her tail." She has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped & tested heartworm neg. Will post more info as we get to know her. Adoption $165. Please fill out an application at www.companimals.org or email for more info.
