More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). DOB: 4/12. Weight: ~45 lbs. Poor Rachel is in foster care now having spent about ½ her life in the shelter. But she knows that there are better things out there. She has seen doggie Kongs; she has tasted peanut butter; and she has had the freedom of a fenced in yard to run (but is never left out alone). But the best thing would be having her own person to love her. Rachel has the softest fur! She is house trained and crate trained. She is also going through her “teens” and is always interested in 2-3 things at once. Rachel would like to meet your dog before making a permanent commitment and would need to be introduced slowly. Also your dog would need to be submissive to her and very laid back. Even better, she would shine as a single dog. She has had a rabies shot, 7-way shot, bordetella, and been wormed. She is also spayed, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Rachel came into the shelter on 3/28/14. Our adoption fee is $130.00 and it helps to cover a portion of the dog's vetting costs. She will need medication for the remainder of her life. She is a real love bug and just wants to please. We are on a mission to help this poor girl find the loving, healthy, happy home she deserves. We need to get a picture of her with her big, pink teddy bear. She loves to carry it around with her and it's adorable. It may be the first real thing she's had to call her own! Does fine around young children. Update March 4, 2014 - This is what her foster mom has to say about her: Elsie is house trained, will bust out or destroy any kennel you put her in but luckily she is pretty well behaved in the house as long as there are no drawers or cabinet doors she can get into. Also will clear a kitchen counter really quick. Loves to chew up collars and leashes and an occasional coffee table book. She does better if she has plenty of tennis balls to tear up during the day. She is very pushy and bossy with other dogs. If someone is in the spot she wants, she will sit on them till they move. Likes to hide all the toys under the cushion of the couch so she can come back and get them later. She does not start fights, just likes things her way. No cats or small critters of any kind. Gets along with other dogs. It's amazing they tolerate her behavior." Well, that's pretty clear! Our adoption fee is $130.00 and it helps to cover a portion of the dog's vetting costs.
