More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Hi! I am Dix ( Also know as Dixon) I am a 1 1/2 year old mixed breed lover. I knows basic commands, house trained (in my foster home), great with all dogs, crate trained and take treats oh so gently. My personality is calm in nature but I do love to play when I am outside. I am very treat driven so training me will be easy with some guidance. Even though I am gentle I do not realize how big and strong I am when I am on a leash, but my foster mom is teaching me. For this reason I do recommend older children 8+. I am currently in a foster home with other dogs and kids and I am doing great. I can't wait to find my forever home. Posted Breed: Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL “BUCKET LIST” FAMILY Willa was first spotted by Detroit Pit Crew in January, with a large mass on her side, wandering the streets look ing for food. Fortunately, they were able to catch her and get her to a vet. Not only did they diagnose a mass cell tumor, but this poor girl was also heartworm positive. The mass was removed successfully and she was transferred to us to prepare her for her heartworm treatment. In the time since Willa was rescued from the streets she has won over the hearts of everyone she's met. She is very affectionate and LOVES attention. Her heartworm was treated and she went into a new foster home where she could be spoiled until her forever home is found. She is currently living with three other rescue dogs, and gets to snuggle in her foster parents' bed at night. This is one very lucky girl! She thinks dogs rule and cats drool, so no cat friends for Willa. Her foster parents noticed some odd behaviors so Willa was seen by the wonderful staff at Animal Neurology and MRI Center, where her foster mom works. After some tests and special blood work, we got the news we were dreading; Willa is currently in stage four kidney failure. This is heartbreaking news for anyone who has spent time with her, BUT she is a fighter and so are we! With prescription food and multiple daily medications, Willa is in great spirits, loves to go on walks, and loves to play with her foster friends. The vets can't promise how long she will have, but it could be 6 months to 1 year is their estimate. Willa is looking for a very special home that will understand her situation and spoil her for the time she has left. We just know someone out there show her the love she deserves for the rest of her life! This girl has made it this far and now she is looking for a family to help her live her life out to the fullest. If you are interested in helping Willa complete some bucket list adventures, please fill out an application. Also, her new family will receive assistance for her food and medication (medication is $30 a month) We do not have a facility for you to visit. I love to go on walks and could use a little work on not pulling - I don't always realize how strong I am. I know several obedience commands and do best when crated if you have to be away from home. I sometimes get nervous around new dogs and need time and patience when I meet new canine friends to make sure that I am comfortable. Come meet me and we could be hanging out together soon! Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shar Pei / Mixed. Otis is Shar Pei mix, estimated to be about 5-8 years old. He was found left on the side of the road in South Carolina for at least a week. He is a little shy, but he is very sweet. Since being rescued he has truly come out of his shell! He is goofy and has lots of energy. He loves belly rubs and butt scratchs. He loves being outside, going on walks, chewing bones, and eating. He loves having a bed/rug/spot to sleep & snores and makes funny noises. It seems that his has a history of abuse and can be a little wary of people. Some snapping has been seen mostly out of nerves or protectiveness. This behavior has never been shown towards me or any guests, only towards roommates who have not been around him. He has actually loved when people come over because there is more people to pet him. He would be good with a single person or a family environment where everyone in the household can bond and love him & he know he can trust them. Good with kids he has been around, but not around them for long periods of time. Not good with cats. He has been good with my dog, but he can be a little possessive with toys/food (just with dogs trying to take them sometimes). He loved going to our small dog park and was good with all the dogs, but mostly hung out with all the people! He is in good health, up to date on shots, no heartworm. He had x-rays done on his legs after an odd gait & some limping. This showed his hip was dislocated. He has surgery to fix his hip on June 7th. He is doing so well & the very next day was using his leg again - I need to get him to slow down & take it easy sometimes! His leg had been like this for some time so he may require some long-term joint care, but otherwise his leg does not seem to bother him & he is healing well. I am hoping to get him into a local rehab place to learn some exercises and stretches for him. His x-rays showed that he has bee bees in him from being shot, so his wariness towards people is understandable. He's had it pretty tough, it seems; he is so sweet and goofy & he just deserves the world. My name is Ellen & I can be reached at egduane@gmail.com with any questions about Otis.
