More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed. Hi! I am Taylor, a 2 year old mixed breed girl. I have a soft, thick coat and adorable ears. I was found in an abandoned house in Detroit struggling to care for my litter of puppies. CCRC took me in and I was able to raise my puppies in a foster home until they were ready to be adopted. Now all my puppies have found homes but during my medical work it was found that I am heartworm positive. I am currently preparing for my treatment but I would love to find my forever family in the meantime! I am a calm, quiet girl who doesn't ask a lot from my people. A soft bed to lie on and yummy food in my bowl are on the top of my list. I enjoy my crate and spend a lot of time relaxing in there. I enjoy being around people but take a while to warm up to physical affection. I am perfectly house trained in my current foster and walk wonderfully on a leash. None of that crazy pulling and jumping from me! I also don't mind the other dogs in my foster home but am not much into playing yet either. I might feel more up to when I start feeling a little better. If you would like to get to know me, talk to my foster mom! We could be best buds in no time. We do not have a facility for you to visit. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Weimaraner / Mixed. Hi! I am Matilda, a 14 month old mixed breed girl. I came to CCRC very very skinny and malnorished. I have since put on some weight and am now a beautiful, healthy girl. I have great toy and tug drive and will fetch a ball or any toy with enthusiasm! I LOVE to play! I also have great food drive which makes it easy to teach me all sorts of things. I would do great in dog sports, running or just as an active companion. I am a smart girl and will quickly learn anything you want to teach me. I have been doing a great job meeting new dogs and have some doggy friends now. I do get nervous and reactive around dogs I don't know, however, so I will need continued work in this area. I have no worries about people, though, so come meet me and we could be playing together in no time! We do not have a facility for you to visit. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Frankie is 5 years old and he is up to date on all of his vaccinations. I still take him to North Oaks Animal Hospital in Clarkston and they have all his records. He has primarily lived with just me his entire life and he listens to me and behaves well. He does get excited when I have visitors and he is around other dogs. He is not aggressive by any means, he is just very playful and full of energy. I have taken him several times to be boarded when I have been out of town and they always tell me his behavior is good and he does very well in group play. He sleeps in his own bed at night and is loose in the house when we aren't home. He doesn't get into trouble but he does prefer to be on the couch. He's a big cuddler - a real sweetheart who is really a big baby at heart. He knows how to sit and stay and "go to bed". He's really a great dog but work keeps me away too often and it's not fair to him. Drop CCRC an email if you can give this guy a good home and they will forward it to me.
