Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Hi! Thanks for giving me some attention! I'd like you to know that I've already been spayed or neutered. At Animal Friends, dogs and cats also leave fully up-to-date on shots and microchipped. All I need now is to find someone who will love me. Please ask to meet with an adoption counselor, so we can be properly introduced and talk about what kind of pet you're looking for. We can discuss whether you're looking for a lap pet or a social butterfly, an "only pet" or a furry "sibling" for kids or other animals. Best of all, by adopting from Animal Friends, you make it possible for them to rescue and care for another pet who truly needs help. So, what are you waiting for? Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** Our brindle baby, Shona, came to Animal Friends as transfer from another shelter. She is friendly with people and loves to be near them, but she doesn''t appear to be a big fan of cuddling right now. Shona loves her food and toys, but she can be a little possessive with them so she will need to go to an adult-only home with patient guardians who understand her needs. And although this energetic little girl has been very playful with other dogs, she can have a rowdy playing style with her canine comrades. Shona CANNOT live with cats. But if she can find a home with another fun-loving dog, she would be over the moon! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** This lovely lady arrived at Animal Friends in May 2017 as a transfer from another shelter. Since her time with us, she has certainly lived up to her name. She loves her humans, so she has participated in some off-site events for AF and she has done well with a wide variety of new people. Angel also seems to enjoy travel and hasn’t had any issues during her frequent car rides. She cannot go to a home with cats, and she can be a little intense with dog interactions. And even though Angel has interacted with a wide age range of people, she can be a little possessive with food and treats. As a result, Angel will need to go to an ADULT ONLY home! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** This handsome older gentleman arrived at Animal Friends in May 2017 as a transfer from Fayette County Animal Control. He wasn’t in the best physical condition when he arrived, so the AF Medical Team wasted no time getting him more comfortable. Initially, it looked like Otto’s biggest medical concern was severe dental disease; however, we soon realized that he had bigger issues than his teeth. He began showing symptoms of possible neurological disease and was sent to PVSEC for a thorough evaluation. Unfortunately, Otto’s exam showed that he was suffering from a brain tumor, and surgery was not recommended for a dog at his advanced age. Otto’s story has been sad up to this point, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. He is a wonderful dog with a lot of love left to give. He isn’t a big fan of other animals, so he will need to be the only furry family member. And even though Otto loves his humans, he can be a little possessive with his toys. As a result, members of his new family should be 12-years-of age or older. ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. Best of all, by adopting from Animal Friends, you make it possible for them to rescue and care for another pet who truly needs help. So, what are you waiting for? Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** Bishop is a very special dog who we''ve gotten to know very well in his time at Animal Friends. When he first arrived after being rescued by our Humane Investigations team, he was very fearful around people. Although he seemed to like people, he didn''t quite know how to trust them. As time went by, we found that he just needed to learn how to interact with humans. With the hard work of staff and volunteers, Bishop has started to come out of his shell and his true personality is beginning to shine through! While he has made great strides, Bishop is still a little unsure in new situations. Because of this, he is looking for a calm, adult only home where he can settle in. What we''ve learned about this handsome guy is that he takes time to warm up and isn''t afraid to let you know how he feels. He may growl when meeting a person for the first time, but as long as his human friends can respect his boundaries Bishop can become a trusting boy. Whether he isn''t comfortable with a certain type of handling or is uneasy in a particular situation, allowing him to take things at his own pace helps him to adjust. Bishop loves treats and a tasty snack is definitely the way to his heart! He can be possessive of his things and will guard his food, treats and toys. But, with some positive redirection, he will happily trade for something special like some cheese or lunch meat. Because he will be uneasy at the vet''s office or groomer, we''ve taken some steps to acclimate him to wearing a muzzle so this experience will go as smooth as possible. To allow him to continue his progress, Bishop''s new family will need to keep working hard with him! In his time at Animal Friends, Bishop''s closest friends have come to know him as a friendly and fun-loving dog. Although he has some special quirks, the progress he has made so far is extremely encouraging and he continues to grow each day! Once you gain his trust, he will make a wonderful companion - if you can give Bishop the gift of a loving and understanding home, come and meet with one of our Adoption Counselors today. ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. He was rescued from a hoarding situation by our Humane Investigations team and has had to work hard to trust people again. Because these sweet dogs have never lived inside, they are very timid and nervous around most people. Many of them will need to go to a very patient home that is understanding of their circumstances. He would do best in an ADULT ONLY home. He also cannot live with cats or rabbits. These pups are certainly beautiful and worth the time and effort to help them continue to grow more trusting of people. Someone believes in Stan so much that they have sponsored his adoption, so he is truely priceless! If you are looking to give a gorgeous dog the second chance it truly deserves, visit Animal Friends today and ask our Adoptions Team about meeting Sherlock! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.
