Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Hi! Thanks for giving me some attention! I'd like you to know that I've already been spayed or neutered. At Animal Friends, dogs and cats also leave fully up-to-date on shots and microchipped. All I need now is to find someone who will love me. Please ask to meet with an adoption counselor, so we can be properly introduced and talk about what kind of pet you're looking for. We can discuss whether you're looking for a lap pet or a social butterfly, an "only pet" or a furry "sibling" for kids or other animals. Best of all, by adopting from Animal Friends, you make it possible for them to rescue and care for another pet who truly needs help. So, what are you waiting for? Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** Our brindle baby, Shona, came to Animal Friends as transfer from another shelter. She is friendly with people and loves to be near them, but she doesn''t appear to be a big fan of cuddling right now. Shona loves her food and toys, but she can be a little possessive with them so she will need to go to an adult-only home with patient guardians who understand her needs. And although this energetic little girl has been very playful with other dogs, she can have a rowdy playing style with her canine comrades. Shona CANNOT live with cats. But if she can find a home with another fun-loving dog, she would be over the moon! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He was rescued from a hoarding situation by our Humane Investigations team and has had to work hard to trust people again. Because these sweet dogs have never lived inside, they are very timid and nervous around most people. Many of them will need to go to a very patient home that is understanding of their circumstances. Sherlock is REQUIRED to go home with another calm dog to help him adjust to living in a home. He would do best in an ADULT ONLY home. He also cannot live with cats or rabbits. These pups are certainly beautiful and worth the time and effort to help them continue to grow more trusting of people. If you are looking to give a gorgeous dog the second chance it truly deserves, visit Animal Friends today and ask our Adoptions Team about meeting Sherlock! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. I''d like you to know that I''m up to date on all my shots, microchipped, and I''ve already been neutered. All I need now is to find someone who will love me. This Greek God of Awesomeness came to Animal Friends from a rescue organization in April 2017. He is very active and jumpy, so potential adopters will need to be ready for serious exercise and training. Zeus has lived with dogs in the past, but he can be a little possessive with his food and toys. His new Mt. Olympus should be filled with plenty of balls and other toys, and human family members should be at least 12 or older. Also, I CANNOT go home with cats! Although Sapphire was very timid when she first arrived at the shelter, she has made steady progress with the help of volunteers and staff members. She is still cautious with new people, but she can warm up quickly when given the opportunity to approach visitors on her own terms. Once Sapphire is comfortable, she loves to play fetch or playfully gnaw on her favorite squeaky toy. Sapphire needs to go to an Adult Only home WITHOUT cats! Let's sit down together! ***************************************************** This stunningly handsome boy is Stan, who came to Animal Friends from a hoarding situation in September of 2015. The dog warden rescued Stan with his mom and other siblings who were all living in squalid conditions. Stan had never been socialized with people as a puppy and unfortunately had not been exposed to indoor living. Therefore, Stan is initially very fearful of new people, noises and surroundings. Because of this, Stan needs to go to a home with only adults, and WITHOUT cats. It took over six months of dedicated and patient work from staff and volunteers to win Stan over and teach him how to trust. Even with those he knows, Stan is still very nervous and timid. He needs an extremely patient and understanding owner who is willing to put in the time and effort needed for Stan to come out of his shell. Unlike some of the other dogs he came in with, Stan is confident in himself and so when afraid he barks at whatever it is that is scaring him instead of hiding. This can be intimidating but is manageable. Probably due to his previous living situation, Stan guards his food and toys. He will trade for toys, which is a great step, but gets very uncomfortable with people when he is eating. Stan will most likely never be a dog who tolerates parties or group gatherings, and because he has lived most of his life outside, he lacks a lot of skills that you and I might assume a dog should know. Patience and consistency will be key to his success in a home! This handsome boy deserves a loving forever home, and has waiting a long time to be ready for one! If you think Stan might be a good fit for you, please stop by Animal Friends today to talk to an Adoption Counselor about meeting him! Someone believes in Stan so much that they have sponsored his adoption, so he is truely priceless! ***************************************************** To learn more about Animal Friends or view adoptable dogs, cats and rabbits, visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.
