More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 06/24/15 Yet another member of the Heartworm Heartthrob club, this little compact, blocky headed sweetheart is Tallie. Thought to be 4 yrs old, Tallie is a Pit mix with a maybe a splash of Border Collie. Whatever mix she is, Tallie is a gem. She has come a long way in a short time from the scared, sad girl that first walked through our doors. It takes her about 5 minutes to warm up and Tallie just want to be your best friend. She is so loving, all she wants to do is crawl into your lap and give and get kisses. We haven't had a lot of opportunities to see how she is with other dogs due to her heartworms, however she can come across as dominate, but wags her tail the whole time. The last walk she went on with another male dog went pretty well and we are confident that with proper introductions Tallie could get along with another male dog in the home. Tallie will need some time and patients to be allowed to learn what is expected of her and to know she is safe. Her adoption fee is $145.00 She is spayed, current on vaccinations, has her annual rabies vaccination and micro-chipped. . If you are interested in adopting please go to www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Came in w/ 3 pups Hi I'm Miley. I do not have a tragic tale of unfortunate beginnings like some of my kennel mates do. I was just stray. Well not just a stray, I was a mom dog with my three precious babies, sitting in the pound. A lady from Partners came and saved my babies and took me too. Oh how grateful I was that my babies were going to live. I was even more grateful to hear that all three were adopted into loving homes. I was so hopefully that soon it would be my turn to find a forever home where I be loved and cherished too....but here I sit. You see, I have what you'd call "stranger danger" issues. New people can be kind of scary for me. I do much better with women and warm up faster to them, but men take me a little longer. I have gotten much better over the years, but the issue is sometimes still there. I do just great with the male care givers at the shelter that I've grown to love and trust. I love to roll over for tummy rubs and play with other male dogs. There is a volunteer that comes a few times a week to walk me and it took me 5 minutes to fall in love with her. I wish there was someone out there who would take a chance on me and be willing to help me work through my fear. I'm really a fun loving girl who loves play, snuggle and give lots of kisses. I am spayed, current on vaccinations, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $145.00 IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, GO TO OUR HOME PAGE AT www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an application. Sugar FOSTER...

      rescue
      Breed: Shiba Inu
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Troy, IL
Posted Breed: Shiba Inu (medium coat). 08/18/16: Update on Sugar. Sugar has come a long way since first coming to her foster home. She loves to run in the yard now which she used to not know what to do with a freedom run. She also loves attention and comes up when her foster mom is sitting or laying down to get some love--she seems to have never had attention before so she now groans when you rub her face and tummy. She will always probably be skittish so needs a quiet environment that she will not always be startled with loud noises and quick movements. She is probably younger than previously thought as she still runs with the young dogs. She is housebroke and does fine with the other dogs. She does get a little aggravated if the youngest gets too rowdy with her but puts him in his place. She's a sweet girl who deserves some one-on-one attention. 01/11/14: This is Sugar. She is at least a 10 year old (probably older) purebred shiba inu who was most definitely used for breeding. She is special needs in the fact that she is extremely skittish about everything. She is completely unfamiliar with a leash and had never been up or down stairs prior to coming to her foster home a couple of weeks ago. She also didn't want anything to do with the snow storm we had this past weekend in fact she wouldn't go outside (she would stand and scratch at the door to come back in) for two days when there was snow on the ground (although she didn't have an accident during this whole time). I think she may have never seen snow before either?? Her breed is bred to hunt the mountains of Japan so it should be her natural habitat so I believe she has led a very contained life and was just used for breeding. She hunches down when u pick her up and prefers to just stay on the bed. Otherwise she is as sweet as sugar, hence, her name. She loves to have her face rubbed (she closes her eyes as if "this feels so good"). As you will see in the pictures the few times she gets off the bed is to gather the stuffed toys which she picks up very gently and brings them to lay next to her as if they are her babies. She pretty much ignores the other 5 dogs in the home except to snap at them if they bother her "babies" too much. I believe she has had many litters. In fact when she was spayed she had pyometra and infection of her uterus, which was completely infected with pus. She was lucky it didnt' burst. She also had the worse teeth I had ever seen, they were completely black. They are nice and clean now, but she did have to have 6 of them removed. She will require a very quiet home that has easy access to go outside to do her business and understand that she has probably had a hard life and just needs security and time to adjust. She has amazingly only had one accident in the home, but that is not unusual for the shiba breed. They do not like to go where they live. Sugar's adoption fee is $145.00. If you are interested in adopting her please go to our home page at www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. She is spayed, current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, dewormed and microchipped. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). 01/03/16 Herschel does not do well with small children!! 10/14/15 Update! Herschell's foster mom would like for you to know about this special boy. Loves to snuggle, go for walks and especially car rides. His age and cataracts doesn't stop this little man. Hershell is housebroken and crate trained All he wants is love and a forever home. 09/12/15 What is it about senior dogs that warms our hearts??? This little gentleman is Herschel. He is thought to be an 8 to 10 years old Chihuahua. As you can see, Herschel is somewhat vision impaired with his eyes being blue. This can be scary for such a small fellow. He will need time and patience to learn his way around a new home and get familiar with smells and touches of his new person or family. Soft, gentle talking is the way to win Herschel over to help make him feel safe. If someone comes up too quickly on him and attempts to scoop him up without warning, his only defense is to nip. Once Herschel feels safe with his person, he just loves to cuddle and snuggle deep into your chest. Herschel seems to be partial to our male volunteers. He does well with other older, laid back, small dogs. This little sweetie is so deserving of a second chance of having a new home to spend the rest of his golden years, and he promises to ask for too much - a soft bed, good food and a lap to snuggle in. Her adoption fee is $145.00 He is neutered, current on vaccinations, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. Posted Breed: Manchester Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 11/05/15 Update! Snickers, My precious old boy. He beats to his own drum. Very laid back, stays away from trouble. He would love being and only pup, or just one other older, preferably a female. He can be shy at first, but given time he warms up and loves his people. He is house, crate and car trained. He loves car rides, jumps right in and out of the car. He has his favorite bed, doesn't let anyone else use it, and that comes with him. He's been around kids and just ignores them for the most part, but probably not good around children under 2! 10/14/15 I always like to update Snickers, this is him in his bed in his foster home. This is his favorite place to relax!! Sweet boy! 01/07/2015 Snickers is doing great in his foster home. He is not fond of the larger high-energy dog in the home, but does well with the other laid back dogs. He would love to be an only dog as he loves to be loved on and curl up in your lap once he trusts you. We do believe he was abused in the past as he is very wary at first where your touch him until he gets to know and trust you especially around his neck where it appears he had an imbedded collar or some trauma to his neck at some point. He now allows his foster mom to touch and love on him anywhere and give him kisses on the face. He does a happy dance when he's excited and has begun to play with toys when the other high energy dog is not around. He is house broke but will mark to let the other dog he doesn't care for to stay away. This has diminished greatly with correction and the help of "no mark" spray. We believe being an only dog or with very laid back dogs he will not do this. We believe that he may only be about 8 years old. He has had a hard life so it is not easy to tell. He is very laid back and would make someone a great low maintenance dog. He does not require to go outside often and will hold it if it rains. He does not like the cold or the rain. He will go out if instructed. Please give this poor boy a home. He will make someone a loving companion who is loving to him. 10/27/14 Snickers with Sarah!! He loves this young lady!! 07/06/14 Sue wanted to update Snickers pictures, he has came a long way since he first came to partners. He is a sweet boy who wants to hang out with the volunteers and staff. He is a quiet boy and minds his own business. He just needs someone to give him the love he deserves. Older dogs make great companions. Won't you give Snickers a second chance? 12/29/13: This is Snickers he came to Partners For Pets a very scared boy. He's doing much better now and attended adoptions today. He is a handsome guy but will take some patience from someone to understand. He can be very fearful at first. Snicker's adoption fee is $145.00. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Serta was found June 10 with a horribly embedded rope around her neck and severely emaciated. She was taken to Horseshoe Animal Hospital where the rope was removed. For awhile there, she had lost her vision too. But through all her treatments and bandage changes, with people she didn't even know, she was wonderful! Always happy, tail wagging, and giving kisses. As if that wasn't enough, the poor girl had to endure heartworm treatment also. Once again, she came through like a champ. Now Serta is ready to know what it's like to have a real home with lots of love. She knows some basic commands like "sit", "down", "shake", and "stay" and she walks well on a leash. Serta would be best as an only dog and in a home with no children. Her adoption fee is $145.00. She is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, GO TO OUR WEBSITE AT www.partnersforpetsil.org to fill out an online adoption application.
