Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Hound (short coat). All of the animals posted on our site have been temperament tested. While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Carmella is a 1 year old hound pit mix. She was adopted by a husband and wife when she was a puppy. The husband and wife split up and she had to go to a rescue. She is a very sweet dog and seems like she can get along with other dogs and cats. She needs to have an owner that is willing to do some obedience training. She has a wonderful personality but has never been worked with. When we got her she had NEVER been vetted (No rabies, No DHLPP, No Bordetella). She was not spayed. She was full of worms. She tested positive for Lymes disease and is currently going through a 30 day Doxycycline treatment. We now have her current on vetting and she is on Tri-fexis for heartworm and flea prevention and also has been microchipped. She is a good dog that needs to find her “good” owner.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Carolina Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA

While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Gertie is a happy little brown dog. Actually, she should be a smaller brown dog, as she has had way too many groceries so far in her life. We are thinking about 15 lbs. would be a healthy weight for her. Part of the problem is that she is so friendly! She is always there, wagging her tail, looking up at you, and it's so easy to give her a piece of that sandwich or a spoonful of mashed potatoes. It's Weight Watchers for Gertie! That said, you couldn' t find a better family dog. All that friendliness makes for a wonderful, happy dog, who will love you with all her heart and greet your friends with total joy and welcome. Good with other dogs, too, she will be a dream to have as your own. Her foster says of her..."She needs to lose some weight, but is friendly and loves to be petted." Oh my, does she love to be petted. She would stand next to you all day if you would pet her and never stop. Sweet, happy, small, easy, that's our Gertie. A great first dog, a fantastic forever dog. A special note; SURPRISE, SURPRISE! tubby Gertie is not tubby at all. She is about to be a MAMA! We were wrong. The ultrasound is showing two tiny puppies. How exciting! Do apply for this sweet dog so you will be first in line when she has weaned the little ones. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOU FROM HER FOSTER; Our pregnant little Gertie is a real sweetheart! She's very friendly & affectionate & loves to give kisses & sit on my lap. She walked right by my 2 cats without batting an eyelash - good sign there. NOTE: Gertie gave birth to two adorable babies and has taken great care of them. Gertie is ready to go out into the world now that her puppies are weaned and find her very own home where she will be loved forever and ever. *Gertie requires a fence yard. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Jeff had a miserable start to life and was abandoned by his family. He was alone and frightened. He has now spent time with his foster and has learned that there are really people out thre who will love him and treat him well. He is now ready for his forever home where he will be loved forever and always. Here is what his foster has to say about him... "Jeff is a beautiful mix who is about 18 months old. His parents say he is the sweetest dog, attentive and always eager to please. Jeff is only being rehomed because his current family is expecting a new baby and he doesn't do well around small children. They are heartbroken over it, but know he will make someone so happy! Jeff loves playing with some other dogs and could run for hours. That being said, he is more than happy to sit by your side on the sofa and curl up for a nap! Due to his timid and sometimes fearful personality, he would not be adopted to a family with children under 12. He has some dog selectiveness so a mature calm dog with be best to teach him confidence. Jeff requires a fenced yard just to make sure he does not get around smaller children or dogs that may make him fearful. NOTE: We want Jeff to go to a home with a physical fence so he can play freely and safely. Also, Jeff does not interact well with other dogs when he is on a leash. He will become agitated if he meets another dog while leashed. Most of the problem seems to be solved if he is not on a leash. He seems to feel defenseless when restrained. Flash is a special boy. He was heartworm positive and underwent treatment when he first came to the rescue. He got very sick from the treatment. It has taken him a while to recover and be his lovable self again but now he is happy and healthy. He is a wonderful house dog, housebroken, neutered, shots up to date, and does not chew things up. Flash says, I am really looking for a home where it is not too active and adults or respective children over 16. Flash needs time to adjust to new environments but will be a good loyal companion if you just give him time to adjust. He needs to be introduced slowly. Flash is selective about his dog friends, he does not like for other dogs to get in his face and again slow introductions will provide him the time he needs to get acquainted and see if he can make a new friend. He loves to play ball and will play fetch with you and then come in and settle down while you relax too. Flash has also had obedience training and has learned a great deal from training. Seriously though, he really does love people and we hope that you are the one who is willing to give him a chance at a forever home. His only requirement is that you get lotsa balls because he is going to require lots of play time..... Remember, no cats, slow introductions to new people and dogs dogs and lotsa balls..... Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. It's impossible to describe small Pami without using the word "adorable". A friendly littlle dog, good with children and other dogs, she will be so happy to trot alongside you through life. She prances when she walks.. Such a happy girl. Only one thing is lacking in her life to make everything perfect...a family of her own. She is going to turn heads wherever you take her with that unique "beauty spot" on her face. We will be quite truthful with you, we have no idea what breeds are in there, except some kind of terriers. Perhaps some Jack Russell terrier? She is one of a kind! But as we all know, beauty, which she has in abundance, is only skin deep. It's the inside of Pami that is so spectacular. She has a great natural temperament, just made for a family dog. We have gotten her all ready to go for you, making sure she has all her shots and has been completely vet checked. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOU FROM HER FOSTER: She does prefer men and wants to snug up and cuddle. She is also terrified of leashes and harness', do not know why, so she will need some training to walk on a leash. Pami’s former owner was an older gentleman who due to medical issues could no longer take care of her. Poor Pami doesn't understand why she had to leave her beloved home and favorite human. She is a scared little girl who will need a patient and understanding family that will give her the time to feel safe and secure again. She will seek out places to hide until she is comfortable. Then she will approach you for some gentle loving. Although she is good with other dogs, they do intimidate her, so slow introductions to any canine friends will be needed. In addition, Pami will need a fenced yard. If you are interested in Pami, please contact: rorrcanine@gmail.com *** Click here to sponsor this dog! ***

If you are looking for an easy to love, sweet dog, Travis is your guy. His foster says "he is a laid back dog and he likes his walks. He doesn't jump and very calm. He is wonderful with other dogs." This is one good ole boy, ready to play sniff the grass in the yard and stretch out in the shade. This great temperament comes naturally to Travis, who is hoping to enjoy life to the fullest with his own person or family who live in the country. Travis is currently located in Berryville, VA. If you are a hound lover, let Travis become your new love. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOU FROM HIS FOSTER: Travis is a wonderful Treeing Walker Hound who has had a rough past and is enjoying life more each day. He is great with other dogs, is too interested in cats to have one in the house with him, fine with school age children, but has never been around babies. He will need a fenced yard and 3 walks daily. He likes a soft dog bed and sleeps in a crate all night. He should not be crated other than that--except for car rides. Travis would be best with someone at home with him and with a dog friend. He has some health issues due to being hit by a car, but doesn't let this hold him back. He is laid back and happy to sleep away the day between walks and yard time. He is a former hunting dog, so pulls hard when in hunting mode and needs to be walked in a harness. Also, since he is still learning about living in a house he will sometimes chew up stuff. If you are the special person who wants to give Travis the care and companionship he needs and deserves please contact RORR. Heather is a young, VERY sturdy lady. The wind will never blow this one over! She has a strong body and is an active dog, so she would be the perfect fit for an active person or family. She would be a fantastic hiking partner and would like lots of outdoor play. A physically fenced backyard will be needed for her, so she can run and play safely. Eager to learn and with an extra loyal heart, she is going to be a perfect best friend and partner to an individual or a family. Full of life and fun, Heather is hoping every day that "her" family is out there and will come soon so she can get "game on!" She is the type of dog who will be the life of the party. AND the light of YOUR life. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOU FROM HER FOSTER: She's a perfect medium size, 58 lbs, super pretty with insanely soft fur. She's still a puppy (a little over a year old) so she has tons of energy, but she's a quick learner and very eager to please. Comes when called, sits on command, good on the leash, and 100% house-trained. Calm and quiet in the crate. Most affectionate dog we've ever met! Loves everyone. . Great with sturdy children, should be at least 8 just because of her playful strength (she'll probably jump up and lick them). She needs slow introductions with other dogs and will want to play rough. She may be ok with very dog savvy cats but would not recommend. She's a dream dog for anyone who's looking for a young dog to train and play with and cuddle. We could see that Bruno had a lot of life and love left to give, so we pulled him into foster care. Bruno is diabetic and does require daily insulin injections, but the cost is quite reasonable.
