Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We are courtesy posting Lucy for another rescue in the hopes she will find a home soon. Lucy is always looked over. There is nothing flashy about her but this girl will make someone an awesome companion. She certainly loves to please you. Lucy is maybe 3 years old and is probably around 40 lbs. She is an excellent size. Lucy is probably lab and pittie and she is sweet. She was rescued from the Lorain County Dog Kennel. If interested in Lucy, please contact Vera @ 440-775-4101 or Peggy @ 440-984-7014.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Shar Pei / Shiba Inu / Mixed (medium coat). Gretchen and Sam need help. These poor girls were given up by their people when they lost their house. Both Gretchen and Sam were in HORRIBLE shape. Thankfully some rescue people banded together and Fido's Companion got them the vet care they needed and they were spayed. Gretchen is a Shar Pei mix and is about 11 years old. Sam is a Shiba Inu mix and she is 9 years old. They are both very good with other dogs and are currently in foster with a younger child and do great. Sam does want to chase the cats in the home but Gretchen is fine with them. A home without cats would probably be best. We are looking for a loving home that would be willing to take both girls. They are all they have ever had. They are both very low maintenance dogs and would be an easy addition to a new home. If interested in being their hero, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Honey was rescued from another shelter who was full and asked for help. We are thinking she is about 4 years old and weighs 48 lbs. Some type of maybe shepherd mix?? Honey has currently gone to foster and seems to be doing fine with the other dogs and cats. We do not yet know about children. She is also housetrained. This girl is very sweet and her name suits her, she's a love. Honey's vaccines are all up to date and she has been heartworm tested negative. She has also now been spayed. We would prefer that Honey goes to a home with a fenced in yard. She would be fine as an only dog too. If interested in this sweet girl, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Willow has just arrived into our rescue, saved from the local dog pound. She is about 7 years old and only 26 lbs. A great little dog. Willow is great with other dogs and great with cats. We are pretty confident she would be fine with older respectful children. She is also housetrained and rides like a champ in the car. We just can't find anything wrong with this girl. Willow is spayed, UTD with vaccines and has been heartworm tested negative. If interested in Willow, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

Posted Breed: Redbone Coonhound (short coat). Emmie came to us from another shelter in our area that doesn't get much action. She is just a small thing right now at 35 lbs. Age estimate 1 yr old Fully vetted. Good with other dogs. Unsure of fondness for cats. Most Hounds have an awesome, loving personality and are great with kids. They will also normally need a fenced in yard due to following their nose. Stay tuned for more info as we get to know her better. If interested in Emmie, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Coonhound (short coat). This sweet, mild mannered girl is looking for a new home after her elderly caregiver passed away. Nona is between 6-8 years old, 55-60 pounds and is a coonhound. A fenced in yard would be best for this breed as their nose tends to lead them astray. She is spayed and UTD with vaccines. Nona is great with all people although a little timid in the beginning. She is good with other dogs and respectful children. Although she has not been around cats, she has been around a rabbit and could have cared less. If interested in Nona, please call Vanessa @ 330-573-7764 or Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Greta is a Pit mix, around 4 years old, 53 pounds, housebroken and crate trained. She Is living with other dogs and cats and can be a little overwhelmed when she first meets other dogs, so would need a meet and greet to make sure the other dog is comfortable with her energy. She would do better with teenagers and adults- she sometimes plays a little too rough for small children. She's been going on weekly pack walks with other dogs and is doing great.
