Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We are courtesy posting Lucy for another rescue in the hopes she will find a home soon. Lucy is always looked over. There is nothing flashy about her but this girl will make someone an awesome companion. She certainly loves to please you. Lucy is maybe 3 years old and is probably around 40 lbs. She is an excellent size. Lucy is probably lab and pittie and she is sweet. She was rescued from the Lorain County Dog Kennel. If interested in Lucy, please contact Vera @ 440-775-4101 or Peggy @ 440-984-7014.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      CAL - ADOPTI...

      rescue
      Breed: Bagle Hound
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). This precious boy has left a life of a short chain tied outside and getting fed whenever. Best part, due to the perfection of our canine friends, he holds no grudges and loves people. Cal is coming to us today (12/7) from that life down in southern OH. He has been to the vet, he is now neutered, all vaccines are up to date and he is heartworm negative. All those who have spent time with him, the transporters and temporary holding rescue, say he is such a sweet boy. Cal is currently 44 pounds but is a bit thin, he could gain a few pounds. He is currently in a foster home with other dogs and cats and he is doing great. I would say Cal would be great with children who are respectful and at least 6 years old. He is now learning how to play a little. Cal was certainly not housetrained when he arrived but after only a short time in a home he is pretty much trained and has mastered the sit command. Cal has the best temperament and is a dog someone will be able to take anywhere with them. If interested in Cal, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com. He is one great dog.

Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed (medium coat). We have just taken Sophie in from a very neglectful situation. She is spending a couple of weeks with a trainer to learn how to be a dog. She is approximately 6 months old and is at least 1/2 Belgian Malinois. She is now fully vetted. She does have a docked tail, not sure why someone would do that to her but it is done. ONLY HOMES THAT WILL GIVE HER PLENTY OF EXERCISE AND AN ACTIVE PERSON WILL BE CONSIDERED. THIS IS A WORKING DOG AND WILL NOT BE RIGHT FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN'T ENGAGE HER MIND. We will also insist on an adopter having a fenced in yard. Sophie can be a little bit food and toy possessive but her trainer is working with her on that. She is a very loving dog. Please visit Hartman's Hounds facebook page to see some videos of her with other dogs. She likes to play with them but can be a bit bossy. If interested in Sophie, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet Mario, saved from possible euthanasia. Mario was rescued from Franklin County Dog Shelter. Mario is neutered, up to date with vaccines and has been heartworm tested negative. He is also microchipped. Mario does know a few basic commands and is housetrained. He rides great in the car and seems to love all people. We took him into the cat room at the kennel and he seemed ok, more interested in their food than them. Mario is currently in a foster home with two other dogs. So far things are going well and he has been there for 1 1/2 weeks. Mario is about 2 years old and currently 46 lbs, should be about 50 lbs at a good weight. If interested in Mario, please call Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). COURTESY POST: Contact ditrhdrescue@gmail.com Princess has been in the care of another rescue for almost 9 months now. She had been overbred, abandoned and then overlooked at the local kennel. She then found herself on the urgent list when they took her in. She literally had no clue what appropriate social behavior was. She just wanted to love everyone and every dog she saw. But,her approach was way too enthusiastic. Well, 9 months of patience and love, evaluations from trainers and consistent positive training is making her an excellent companion. Princess is 4-5 yrs old and loves all people. Her Tail is always wagging ( that's her trademark) and she shows everyone that the myth about pitbulls is just that,a myth. Princess is fully vetted and good with other dogs, older respectful kids, but, NO CATS Please. Contact ditrhdrescue@gmail.com

She is about 7 years old and only 26 lbs. A great little dog. Willow is great with other dogs and great with cats. We are pretty confident she would be fine with older respectful children. She is also housetrained and rides like a champ in the car. We just can't find anything wrong with this girl. Willow is spayed, UTD with vaccines and has been heartworm tested negative. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amherst, OH
Posted Breed: Coonhound (short coat). This sweet, mild mannered girl is looking for a new home after her elderly caregiver passed away. Nona is between 6-8 years old, 55-60 pounds and is a coonhound. A fenced in yard would be best for this breed as their nose tends to lead them astray. She is spayed and UTD with vaccines. Nona is great with all people although a little timid in the beginning. She is good with other dogs and respectful children. Although she has not been around cats, she has been around a rabbit and could have cared less. If interested in Nona, please call Vanessa @ 330-573-7764 or Peggy @ 440-984-7014 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.
