Posted Breed: Pointer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Peaches is a silly-but-sweet girl. She is active, but can settle well and loves to seek out attention and stay near people. Peaches likes other dogs and gets lonely without a companion, but tends to be over-the-top about it and pushy, so needs properly matched to a dog friend. She has no toy recognition but does perk up to the squeaker. Peaches also requests a dog house at her new home, because she loves to hang out in one! She may not be the best companion for a very small child ONLY because of her energy. She is at the cutoff between medium and large size. She is technically an adult, but we doubt she'll ever really grow up ;) "Adult" is at least 3 years old, but don't tell Peaches. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder, even if just barely. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit or email for adoption application. Shelter phone often does not work, please use email link on this listing.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Hound / Mixed. Little Girl is a lover girl! She is a happy, friendly youngster who just wants to play and give kisses. She is good with some dogs but not others, so a meet-and-greet would be required. She needs play space and love. She does need help learning not to jump up, but she loves treats so should be very easy to train. She is a clever girl so needs a securely gated yard. Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed. Audrey is a sweet girl on the shy side. She responds beautifully to gentle strokes and kind words and would love a quiet home with someone to build her confidence. She walks fairly well on leash and was a little nervous but curious about the car. She prefers to potty outside so may well be housetrained. She will ignore polite dogs but rambunctious or pushy dogs upset her. A meet-n-greet is needed for any doggie companions in her new home. http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Posted Breed: Corgi / Hound / Mixed. Sally is a humble, sweet little thing. It is hard in photos to show just how short she is! She walks well on leash, loves attention and grooming and has a mild activity level. She will tolerate other dogs, but doesn't like them in her personal bubble. She ignored the cats completely. This adorable older lady will make a wonderful companion. Please come give her a nice retirement home! [Sally has some age-related stiffness and does not like to be picked up but otherwise loves to be spoiled!] Est DOB: Jan 2006 Intake weight: 28# http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Senior" is at least 7 years old. Breed: Border Collie-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Border Collie / Husky / Mixed. Quincy greets all people with a happy tail wag. He is very food motivated! You could probably teach him some fun tricks, since he has the collie intensity and smarts. He also has his breeds' need for activity - he is not one to stand still for long, even when enjoying a good grooming session (he is great with grooming and handling and cuddling). He will do best with things to do to keep his brain and body busy. With other dogs, Quincy is...shall we say...overly amorous (okay, okay, he's a humper!). He also postures with other males. Because his behavior seriously annoys other dogs, he is best suited to be the only pup in the home. While he would definitely be the social pariah at the dog park, he is good on leash and is fine around dogs while on walks. He has shown no interest in cats. Est DOB: Sep 2009 Intake weight: 53# http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com "Senior" is at least 7 years old. "Large" is at least 20 inches at the shoulder. She would be very pleased if you would bring her home and teach her all those important things and show her what it means to be safe and loved. Aubie would do best with submissive dog; high energy or assertive dogs may be too much for her as she is very sensitive. http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. With other dogs, he likes to be the boss and is more tolerant of female dogs than other males. He is as strong in will as he is in body, so needs someone used to large dogs! He accepts handling and overall is an easy keeper. Est DOB: Sep 2009 http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years of age. "Extra large" is over 25 inches at shoulder. Posted Breed: Mountain Cur / Mixed. Cute Bruno is an absolutely adorable low-rider! He is a soft natured little guy who likes a good cuddle. He gets really excited when he sees a leash. He is a bit of a foodie and would benefit from a slow-down dish, but takes treats very nicely. He is good with nice dogs and likes to play, but won't take being bullied. Bruno is sadly already heartworm positive at his young age. Please discuss options with the shelter and your vet. He is worth the treatment! Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. It is hard to believe someone lost this big girl, but its true - she was found roaming. She is just a baby still, very young and silly. If you would love the challenge and reward of training up a young gal to be a model citizen, she is full of opportunity! Though definitely of a mastiff type, she is not as huge as a full mastiff (tho she isn't dainty either - she is 78#). She is very sweet and wants to be a lap dog, so be prepared! She does need plenty of exercise and attention to avoid turning her teeth toward destructive enterprises. Also, being big and clumsy, she would be a poor choice for a family with young children. She has done well with a Great Dane but not with a smaller dog. If you have a dog her size, that may work out. But on the other hand, she might be all the dog you need! 'Adult' is at least 3 years old. 'Large' is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application.
