Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Pointer / Mixed. Meet Loki! This happy boy is sure to make you smile! He is a fun loving, goofy, energetic dude. He makes an excellent running buddy and loves taking long walks, but he also likes to just hang out with you in the house. He does pull on a leash but will settle down and behaves himself nicely around other dogs and distractions. He loves a game of fetch and will even catch a disc out of the air. He also enjoys playing with other similar sized dogs, but can be too much for the little ones. He is an extremely smart guy who also enjoys learning tricks and has been practicing a little agility in his backyard. Loki is a mixed breed. We could definitely see Border Collie or even Pointer in him, but it is a mystery to us. Either way, he is a total lover and although he is always up for fun, he is very well behaved in the home and enjoys snuggling and lounging as much as play. Loki is house trained, doesn't chew on things he shouldn't, and can be kenneled. He is also obedient and would love to show you some of his tricks. Loki has excellent manners in the car and absolutely loves going for a car ride. Loki is six years old and about 60 pounds. If Loki sounds like your type of guy, apply to adopt him today. He is such a nice dog who really deserves that perfect forever home. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Artemisia, known as Sia in her foster home, is a gorgeous German Shepherd mix who was born in November of 2015. She is a very sweet and loyal girl who loves other dogs and does okay with cats. Sia loves being with her people, is very affectionate, and walks nicely on a leash. She is also very smart and enjoys learning new things, and is especially attentive when there are high value treats like cheese involved. Sia is house trained when kept on a schedule and is learning all about crate training, although she would prefer if her people were home all the time. Sia does great in the car and would enjoy a family who likes road trips as much as her. Sia is a special girl and is what we call a tripod as she only has three legs. Don't let that fool you as she gets around just fine! Because of this, it will be important she maintains a slim and healthy weight to keep any extra pressure off her joints, which should not be hard as she makes such a great walking buddy. We do not know Sia's background, but she can be a little shy with new people and in new situations so it will be important her forever family recognizes this and is willing to spend time working on building her confidence. Overall, Sia is a great dog who is looking for a quiet and patient home with someone who can help her build some confidence. For the right person, Sia is going to make a wonderful family pet. He is very good with dogs and loves to play and run around outside, and he loves squeaky toys and bones! A home with a resident dog to show him the ropes would also be a good fit for this guy. He does great in his kennel at night and when we leave the house. It's his safe place and he seems to be very comfortable in it. He is also house trained. He loves to stop and sniff everything when we go on walks! He is somewhat afraid of loud and unexpected noises and commotion. He is fine with kiddos but tries to avoid them. He would be a great fit for a family with no kids or older kids/teens that know how to respect boundaries. He does ok on a leash, but could use some more training in that area. All in all, Jesse is a very playful and snuggly pup who loves dogs and his people/owners. Whether you're looking for a friend for a resident dog or a new family member to snuggle with, he's your pup!! Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Minnie came to us under extraordinary circumstances and needed to be taken in immediately. She was surrendered due to mouthiness and excessive amounts of energy. For us, it turned into a blessing! Minnie weighs about 40lbs. She is housebroken, and does know some basic commands, although some diligence is needed. She is a dog that loves to be at your side and will follow you where ever you go, so expect a nearby companion. She loves a variety of toys, such as, frisbees and tennis balls. She loves to chew, so don`t expect the toys to last long (she`s destroyed 3 tennis balls and 2 tug o` war ropes so far). Solid bones and Kong are some of her favorites. she likes to go on walks, and will pull only a little on the leash unless surprised or she sees another critter that interests her. She is progressively liking baths and cuddling for a little while. She is a very active dog, can rock the head tilt, and loves to give kisses. She`s incredibly smart and clever; when trying to bring her in off leash or kennel, tactics to get her to follow only work 2 times, then she figures our what your trying to do. Some additional things to know about her: Minnie was removed from her previous household for `herding` the children. while she is still a puppy, this could be associated with nipping/biting. Minnie does show signs that her previous household was very strict on her, and while she`ll follow along side me (I`m male), she does become slightly fearful of my movement towards her. She does well around females, but a male in the household should have a calm, gentle demeanor. Mouthiness was an issue in the beginning, but she is progressively becoming softer and is learning not to do it. Fear can immobilize her, and she`ll immediately drop to submission, regardless of being led to food. Getting her to eat can be a challenge as she will leave her food alone unless the environment is calm and quiet. She`ll even refuse treats, with the impression there is a catch. Even during training, she`ll turn away from treats and refuse to participate. `Time Out` works wonderfully, she knows what it means, acknowledges the purpose, and is more at ease with this form of discipline. Phil loves kids and showers everyone with affection. Phil's other favorite things are toys and walks – and he especially likes when his foster mom takes him on a jog. He is working on not pulling on the leash while walking, but he jogs very well. Phil is house trained and goes to the door when it is time to go. Phil will go in his crate, but he is not a big fan of his people leaving and will bark and cry when it happens. He is working on letting his people leave without expressing his sadness. Phil will sleep in his crate at night, but he would prefer to be snuggled up next to you in bed. He is medium energy, he loves to play but he is also up for lounging around. Really, he wants to do whatever you are doing! Phil would make a great family dog. He loves kids, and would love to have multiple people to be around (but one would do too)! Phil would do best as the only dog in the home. Phil would do best with a family who will show him a lot of love and affection. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Hello! I'm Shiloh! I'm a 2 year old terrier mix about 15 pounds and am full grown. I am house and crate trained, although I prefer to stay out of the kennel. I am a good buddy to have around and mom says I am the perfect mix of playful and calm. Being a terrier, I love to run and jump, but I also love to snuggle and I am pretty darn good at it. Being so small, I can fit in just about anyone's lap. Also, if you have other pets, it is no problem! I get along with cats just fine and do well with dogs after an initial introduction. Nobody really knows what my life was like before rescue, but I can be a little nervous until I feel comfortable with my situation. For example, when new people come over, it can be really scary to me so I tend to bark lots at them at first. I just want to make sure the strange people don't hurt me! However, with a little time, I will warm up and once I make friends, I make friends for life. Because of this, I require a family who can give me time to warm up to strangers and provide me with structure to help me gain confidence and keep me safe. A quieter home with older kids (12+) would be best. Overall, I am a fun little dog who will make someone a great companion. I am loyal, playful and eager to please. I just need someone to take a chance on me. Will that be you? Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Moose is a young hound mix, born in October 2015. He is about 54 pounds of pure love. If you have ever met a hound, they are true comedians and Moose is no exception. Moose is all puppy and Mr. Personality himself. While there isn't a mean bone in his body, Moose is sure to keep you on your toes. He is a boisterous dog who is working very hard on manners, but will need someone who can commit to continued training and exercise, as well as provide him strong boundaries and structure. In his time with us, he has learned his name, sit, treat, and breakfast/dinner. He is also working on down so that he doesn’t jump up on everyone. He also gets a lot of practice working on leave it, because this boy loves to chew! Moose should never be left unsupervised in the yard, even with a family who has a fence, because he loves to dig. For the right family who loves the goofy, energetic, and sometimes naughty nature of a hound, Moose is a wonderful dog. He gives sweet gentle kisses and loves to snuggle. Moose also loves nothing more than a toy that squeaks. Moose gets along great with other dogs, both big and small. He likes everyone, including kids, although he doesn't always know his own size and still tends to jump up. He has not been around cats while in foster care, so cat testing would have to be done if a potential adopter has a cat. Moose is house trained and crate trained, although he does not love his crate. However, Moose does need to be crated when his people are not home. Moose is not a couch potato and would not do well with a family looking for a calm or laid back dog. He needs a lot of daily exercise to keep him happy and well behaved and interested applicants will need to be able to keep up with all the energy of a hound. Overall, Moose is a fun loving dog who will make someone very happy. If he sounds like a good fit for you family, please apply today! Moose is participating in our Rush to Rescue program, and he is currently being fostered by a pair of offenders at the Rush City Correctional Facility. While there, Moose will be attending a training program with a certified trainer and will be working on his commands with his handlers. Please contact us to find out more about Moose. Meet and greets can be arranged with a Wags & Whiskers volunteer in the prison lobby, adoption event, or other locations for an approved applicant. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? I am a little shy and sometimes strangers and loud noises scare me but once I am your friend I am happy to sit in your lap all day. I have been through two levels of obedience, which has helped me learn better manners and has made me less scared of the world around. I also love walks and doing zoomies! My foster mom says I am high energy and would benefit from a home with an active lifestyle; because of my high energy I would do best with older children that I can’t accidently knock down. Being a princess means I prefer all attention on me. I would do best in a home without cats and I am selective about my doggie friends. All I need is a structured schedule and a warm bed to sleep in! If you are interested in a diamond in the rough then Vala may be your girl. She will shine with a continued commitment to obedience and lots of love! Interested in adopting this lovable animal?
