Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Pointer / Mixed. Meet Loki! This happy boy is sure to make you smile! He is a fun loving, goofy, energetic dude. He makes an excellent running buddy and loves taking long walks, but he also likes to just hang out with you in the house. He does pull on a leash but will settle down and behaves himself nicely around other dogs and distractions. He loves a game of fetch and will even catch a disc out of the air. He also enjoys playing with other similar sized dogs, but can be too much for the little ones. He is an extremely smart guy who also enjoys learning tricks and has been practicing a little agility in his backyard. Loki is a mixed breed. We could definitely see Border Collie or even Pointer in him, but it is a mystery to us. Either way, he is a total lover and although he is always up for fun, he is very well behaved in the home and enjoys snuggling and lounging as much as play. Loki is house trained, doesn't chew on things he shouldn't, and can be kenneled. He is also obedient and would love to show you some of his tricks. Loki has excellent manners in the car and absolutely loves going for a car ride. Loki is six years old and about 60 pounds. If Loki sounds like your type of guy, apply to adopt him today. He is such a nice dog who really deserves that perfect forever home. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Artemisia, known as Sia in her foster home, is a gorgeous German Shepherd mix who was born in November of 2015. She is a very sweet and loyal girl who loves other dogs and does okay with cats. Sia loves being with her people, is very affectionate, and walks nicely on a leash. She is also very smart and enjoys learning new things, and is especially attentive when there are high value treats like cheese involved. Sia is house trained when kept on a schedule and is learning all about crate training, although she would prefer if her people were home all the time. Sia does great in the car and would enjoy a family who likes road trips as much as her. Sia is a special girl and is what we call a tripod as she only has three legs. Don't let that fool you as she gets around just fine! Because of this, it will be important she maintains a slim and healthy weight to keep any extra pressure off her joints, which should not be hard as she makes such a great walking buddy. We do not know Sia's background, but she can be a little shy with new people and in new situations so it will be important her forever family recognizes this and is willing to spend time working on building her confidence. Overall, Sia is a great dog who is looking for a quiet and patient home with someone who can help her build some confidence. For the right person, Sia is going to make a wonderful family pet. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Hello, my name is Shadow. My foster mom says I'm the worlds BEST cuddler! I am a 4 year old female lab mix - but I'm a small lab mix as I only weigh about 40 lbs. I have cute ears that flip flop around and sometimes even flip inside out! I wag my tail alot and am the happiest when I'm around my people! I'm super sweet and just a little bit curious. I’m a little shy with new people, but given some time to warm up, I am an absolute sweetheart. I'm kennel trained, potty trained and I don't bark much at all. I recently finished a basic obedience class and do great on a leash and using my gentle leader. I do well with commands like sit, down, stay, back, leave it, and look at me. My foster mom says I am a very special dog and that I have a rare autoimmune disorder. I will always be on medicine, but since they give it to me inside of treats I don’t mind taking it! I enjoy walks and have a medium energy level so it's great if I can get a daily walk. I love other dogs and am very friendly with them once I get to know them. I don't live with a cat now, but I have in the past and was ok with them. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Posted Breed: Rottweiler / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Sasha is looking for you to take her to your home. She is a warm and friendly, 7 year old and 80 pound dog. She knows her basic commands (sit, stay, down) and is house trained. Sasha loves being petted. If you quit petting her, it is not unusual for her for bounce your hand with her nose so that you will continue. She is great with her foster parents' four year old grandchildren who have taken her for walks in the back yard. She is patient and gentle with children. In her journey, Sasha has had a rough road with men. She is very afraid of men with facial hair. This is a bit of a problem since her foster dad has a beard. We have made progress, and she will now take treats from him, but is nervous when he enters a room. Sasha barks when she is nervous but can easily be distracted. Our son-in-law does not have facial hair, Sasha more readily takes treats from him. Sasha follows her foster mom around the house. She even sleeps on the floor on her side of the bed. There are 3 other dogs in her foster home – 3 lab mixes. After a brief introduction she gets along well with them. She has not been around cats while in foster care, but she can be cat tested if needed. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Red Heeler / Mixed. Hi my name is Leliani though my foster mom calls me Leia for short. I am a typical cattle dog born to work and herd which means I have a lot of energy! I really enjoy running around the backyard, playing with my doggie foster brother, and playing with toys. I play fetch and am learning to chase a disc. True to my breed, I love to be with my people. I follow close by my foster mom and even steal her socks to get her attention. Don’t worry I drop them when she tells me to. I am learning to be in my crate when my foster mom is at work. The first hour is tough to be away from her so I cry. After that I settle down and take a nap. The best days are when I go to daycare during the day and play all day. Did I mention I am a herding breed? That means I love to chase things and need a proper outlet for this instinct. My foster mom says I am super smart and I would do well learning a dog sport or just learning some tricks to impress family and friends. The best family for me would be an active family who enjoys a dog with a little more spunk and intelligence. They say the sky is the limit for me. From the foster mom: Leliani is a smart and active dog looking for a family that will continue to provide both physical and mental exercise. She is great with other dogs but should be with dogs of similar energy level and either her size or larger. Leliani loves meeting new people and is social and friendly, but may be too much for kids under the age of 12. Leliani is a true Cattle Dog mix. If you are interested in adopting her, we encourage you to do your research on the breed. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Husky / Mixed. Hi there. My name is Timber. I am one year old and still very much a puppy in spirit. I love to run outside. I’m adventurous, curious and need to investigate everything. Winter is a favorite season for me. Piles of snow call my name and I plunge right in nose first. I wiggle and giggle my way back to the top and start all over again. If I’m lucky enough, I snarf up a piece of ice to chew, my favorite! I can entertain myself but I also love to play with other dogs. I enjoy fetching up a ball but not likely to bring it back. It’s mine now. New commands? Bring them on. I puff right up with pride when I learn new things and you tell me, “Good boy!” I already have the basics down (including potty outside) but best to review now and again in a less busy place. My handlers think that I’m quite affectionate. I give great hugs and kisses and will snuggle with all my heart. New people to meet? I’m all in! My excitement is difficult to contain when I’m out and about. But we are all working on helping me keep my paws on the ground. Of course, I prefer not to be left alone (who doesn’t?) but if I’m told to ‘go home’, I get right into my crate and settle down for the night. I can also sleep on the bed on the floor and be as content and quiet. Of course, if you want to share your bed with me, I’m OK with that too! Timber is participating in our Rush to Rescue program, and he is currently being fostered by a pair of offenders at the Rush City Correctional Facility. While there, Timber will be attending a training program with a certified trainer and will be working on his commands with his handlers. Please contact us to find out more about Timber. Meet and greets can be arranged with a Wags & Whiskers volunteer in the prison lobby, adoption event, or other locations for an approved applicant. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Phil loves kids and showers everyone with affection. Phil's other favorite things are toys and walks – and he especially likes when his foster mom takes him on a jog. He is working on not pulling on the leash while walking, but he jogs very well. Phil is house trained and goes to the door when it is time to go. Phil will go in his crate, but he is not a big fan of his people leaving and will bark and cry when it happens. He is working on letting his people leave without expressing his sadness. Phil will sleep in his crate at night, but he would prefer to be snuggled up next to you in bed. He is medium energy, he loves to play but he is also up for lounging around. Really, he wants to do whatever you are doing! Phil would make a great family dog. He loves kids, and would love to have multiple people to be around (but one would do too)! Phil would do best as the only dog in the home. Phil would do best with a family who will show him a lot of love and affection. He is the sweetest little boy with so much love to give, will you be his forever home? Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Chow Chow / Mixed. Hi my name is Snoop. I am a male chow mix, born in June, 2006 and weigh 60 pounds. I am a native to Minnesota and love to explore the Minnesota country side. I am shy so I will need time to acclimate to a new environment and people, which doesn’t take long. A quieter, low-key home would allow me the opportunity to get used to new things at my own pace. My foster mom is teaching me the basic commands, like: stay, lay down, and heel. Since I am an older dog, I am already potty trained. I don't enjoy time in the kennel, but my foster mom leaves me out when she's gone and I am very well behaved. I am a non-destructive chewer and only play with doggie toys, I do not jump on people and I do enjoy looking out the window from time to time. I suppose you can say I am a well-mannered, large dog, wise in my doggie years and very calm. I am good with dogs of all sizes but I do prefer older dogs or less active ones. Remember, I'm a senior and those young, crazy ones can be a bit too much for me. Do you have pesky squirrels in your yard? No problem, I’ll chase them up the tree and out of the yard for you. Sometimes I think cats are like squirrels and like to chase them, so I shouldn't live with cats. I do pull a little when on walks, so my foster mom is teaching me leash manners. I'm just so excited to see what my new neighborhood has to offer. I jump on the bed where I love to sleep with you or even the couch where we can snuggle while we watch Animal Planet. I am knee height, and have a low energy level. I do great on car rides; I tend to look out the back window at the car behind us just to say “Hi”. Eventually, I settle down and wait for the car to stop at our destination. Overall, I am perfect companion for someone who wants a senior dog. Are you my fur ever home? I am a little shy and sometimes strangers and loud noises scare me but once I am your friend I am happy to sit in your lap all day. I have been through two levels of obedience, which has helped me learn better manners and has made me less scared of the world around. I also love walks and doing zoomies! My foster mom says I am high energy and would benefit from a home with an active lifestyle; because of my high energy I would do best with older children that I can’t accidently knock down. Being a princess means I prefer all attention on me. I would do best in a home without cats and I am selective about my doggie friends. All I need is a structured schedule and a warm bed to sleep in!
