Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Scribbles is a 4 yr. old Pit type mix that was found homeless and brought to the shelter. Scribbles is a very pretty girl!! She has a light chestnut coat with lots of white all over. Scribbles is larger than a Pit, and quite possibly (with her coloring), has some Boxer in her as well. Scribbles is a playful dog but she also likes to be quiet. She plays with both male and female dogs at the shelter. Scribbles is well mannered with people. She can be a little shy if she doesn't know you but warms up once she is reassured you just want to love on her. Scribbles will most likely need to be housetrained. We recommend possibly crating Scribbles at night and when she is home alone in the day. If you are interested in Scribbles, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Zoey

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Zoey is a 2 1/2 year old beautiful Black Lab mix that looks mostly pure. Zoey is a big girl with big feet and big, lovely ears! She has a sweet manner. Because of her age and her breeding, she is active and needs lots of time and attention from her owners……lots of toys and things to chew, a yard to run in and a tall secure fence so she stays safe and at home. She would really love to have another dog as a playmate! But if that's not possible, playful people will do! :) Zoey will be best suited to 'big dog people' and people who are used to the Labrador type breeds. Zoey will need supervision in house training. If you are interested in Zoey, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat). Tom is a very handsome fellow that we recently took into the shelter. He is about 2 years of age. Tom's breeding is up for grabs but we do believe because of his coloring that he quite possibly is Blue Heeler mixed with possible Lab or Pointer. Tom is a big, playful, strong dog and will need lots of time and attention from his owners, as well as toys, a good sized back yard and a secure fence. If you are 'big dog' people, and want a young, pretty dog, please come see Tom. Tom will need supervision in house training. If you are interested in Tom, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

Winnie is a little frightened at first, and needs to be socialized to bring her out of her shell. Winnie will need an owner she can put her trust in. She is a little sweetheart for sure. Roman

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Roman is a 2 1/2 year old Pit (type) that was brought to the shelter. The people said he has a playful personality but also likes to settle down and be quiet. Roman probably should be an 'only' dog. They crated him some and apparently he did well with that. Roman is a pretty boy with a sweet face! If you like this type of breed, you will like Roman. He is very picky around any other dogs. Please come visit him a few times. Roman will need a secure fence in his new home, as Pits are known for getting through fences. He will also need supervision in house training in his new home. Because he is good about being crated, we strongly recommend that Roman be crated at night and when he is home alone in the day to help with the house training process and to help keep him home and safe when his owners are away. If you are interested on Roman, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Red Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Precious is a gorgeous Red Heeler mix!! She is 3 years old. Precious' owner could not continue to take care of Precious and so she brought her to us in hopes of finding a good home. Precious is a sweet girl and playful with other dogs. She is also quite shy if she doesn't know you. We will ask that interested parties come to the shelter and visit Precious several times so that the bonding process can begin early. We will not adopt Precious for the sake of working cattle as she is a mix. The best environment for Precious is a quiet, gentle loving home... hopefully with a playmate. Precious will need supervision in house training in a new home. Because she is an adult female, we do not believe this will be difficult. We recommend crating Precious at night and when she is home a lone in the day. If interested in Precious, please call Amarillo SPCA at 806 622-0555, or visit her at the shelter, 11901 S. Coulter.

      Breed: Border Collie-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). Marlo is a very pretty, short-haired Border Collie mix. Marlo's owner brought her to us for help in finding a new home. Marlo is now about 4-4 1/2 yr. old. Marlo is very sweet but she is SHY GIRL!. This is quite common in Border Collie behavior. Marlo needs to have several visits at the shelter from interested parties before going home so that she can begin the bonding process. Because Marlo has a shy nature, we believe she will be best in a quiet, adult environment. Marlo is a DEAR SOUL. Please make sure you have lots of gentleness and affection for Marlo. Because she came to us as a young dog, Marlo will need supervision in house training. We recommend crating at night and when she is home alone in the day (in the beginning). If you are interested in Marlo, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

      Lucky

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Amarillo, TX
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Lucky is one of the special abandoned ones that is 'lucky' to be alive. Lucky was found on a roadside in starved condition by a police officer. This nice man did not want to take her to animal control where she would most likely be euthanized. He instead took her home where he and his wife and children nursed her back to health and gave her a fitting name. Once healed, the officer then brought Lucky to us hoping that we could find a good home for her. He already had several dogs and could not keep Lucky permanently. When Lucky first came to us, she was still a little thin. Because she is short, she looked like she had some kind of terrier in her breeding. As she filled out and got stocky, it seemed that Lucky was also probably part Pit. She is definitely a mix. And although she looks part Pit, she is quite short for a purebred. Lucky's coloring also indicates a breed or breeds different from a purebred Pit. Her coat is a, two tone pattern of chocolate and chestnut. She has white on her chest and feet, laced with lots of chestnut freckles. Lucky is now close to 7 1/2 - 8 years old and has been with us awhile. Pits or Pit mixes can be harder to adopt than other breeds. It is unfortunate for Lucky because she is a loving, entertaining little gal! She has a happy personality and LOVES to run and play! She looks you right in the eye and is very engaging, personable and loving! She actually looks like she is smiling most of the time!:) Lucky is great with male dogs, particularly ones that love to play like her. Lucky is 'alpha' with other females and wants to be the boss. She is not mean but likes to be in charge. For someone who does not want a puppy but wants a grown dog with a happy, fun, loving personality, Lucky is absolutely the dog! WE BEG YOU TO COME SEE AND CONSIDER HER!

Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Abigail is 4 1/2-5 years old and is an Australian Shepherd type mix. Abigail was originally given to us by her owners who had lots of chickens that Abigail loved to chase (but the owners didn't 'love' her to do that)! Abigail enjoys life and playing! She loves her toys and her people! She is a special dog that wants to please and we don't understand why someone has not snatched her up. Her face says it all. She is a character! Abigail will need a good fence to keep her home as she is used to the country. And she will need and want to be part of the family! Please come see Abigail! Abigail will need supervision in house training. Being her age and a female, this shouldn't be hard. We recommend crating Abigail at night and possible during the day if left home alone. If you are interested in Abigail, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.
