If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

His fur was matted and he had blood from under the fur. When the medical team went to shave him down to see what they were dealing with they found a horrible mess. He was full of maggots that had been eating away the dead tissue. We are not certain how he got in the this shape but we know that we will do what ever he needs to help him heal. He is in a temporary foster home but could really use a low key Foster. Roger is a little old man about 10 years old. He gets a long with other dogs. Not sure about children but again he needs a very low key Foster Home. UPDATE - Roger is all ready for his home. Please share this little old man at 10years old he is ready to settle down and live an easy life. Fully Vetted even had himself a dental. His fur is growing back too. If you are looking for a running partner and long walks on the trail ..Well Roger is probably not your kinda guy. He prefers to take it easy and lay around and cuddle. He is potty trained and does not chew or destroy anything. Looking For His Mellow Life Companion. Please click on this link and take the quiz before you summit your application http://puppytales.com.au/2015/03/05/is-a-puppy-dog-right-for-you/ Meet Beauty! Do you remember what you were doing over the July 4th Holiday? Well the owner's of this stunning girl decided it would be a great day to dump their dog at a high kill shelter in Chicago, shortly after having puppies. This poor momma dog got sick with the flu, found herself on the "urgent" list, and Guardians came to her rescue. Beauty is about 2 years old, 60 pounds, medium energy, crate trained, potty trained, dog friendly, and kid friendly. This beautiful girl has a beautiful personality to match those stunning looks- she is just such a perfect pleasure and joy to foster! She has no bad habits or things we are working through. Her blue coat has some golden under tones that go with her compelling golden eyes. Beauty loves nothing more than being with her people, and wants to be where the action is- especially if you are cooking in the kitchen! She LOVES getting affection and attention from people. Playing with toys is one of her FAVORITES. She especially loves her Kong, chasing after balls, and a game of tug. Oh, and anything that squeaks! She also loves going on her daily walks/little jogs, car rides and sun bathing. She is always very friendly and polite when meeting new dogs and people. She loves food, and this girl is SUPER SMART- she has learned all her basic commands plus a few tricks. At the end of the day, this sweet girl loves to snuggle right up with with you on the couch. Could Beauty be your forever girl? All of GOTGM pets are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. I never had that before I lived outside tied to a tow chain in my old owner’s yard. I also like to sit in my chair look out the window watch the kids go to and from school every morning & afternoon. Please click on this link and take the quiz before you summit your application http://puppytales.com.au/2015/03/05/is-a-puppy-dog-right-for-you/ Chico is a 3 year old Pharaoh Hound Chihuahua Mix. He is neutered, UTD on vaccines, and housebroken. Chico is full of love and energy. He loves to give kisses and hugs, snuggle, and play with his many toys. He also enjoys his downtime of just relaxing around the house. Chico grew up as an only dog in a quiet home of an elderly couple. Because of that, he prefers a quiet home without a lot of noise. Therefore he would do best in a home without small children. When new people come in, he is best when slowly introduced to them, as he is cautious and can be protective of his loved ones. He loves to run, so leashed walks and/or fenced areas are ideal for him, He is currently in a home with several other small dogs and has been completely comfortable and non-reactive to them.
