If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Please click on this link and take the quiz before you summit your application http://puppytales.com.au/2015/03/05/is-a-puppy-dog-right-for-you/ Yuki is a 3 year old Maltese mix that was an owner surrender to a high kill shelter in Chicago. When the owners brought her in it appeared that they tried to shave her down so to hide the years of neglect the fur was so matted that it was like dreadlocks. They only shaved her body not her face or legs. It took us a trip to the groomer in an emergency to give her some relief from the pain it was causing her. When she was vetted and had her dental they were able to shave the matted fur from her face. She has since been fully vetted. dental and all of her boosters, and of course she is micro chipped. Yuki is in a foster home that has several other dogs and cats and she gets along with everyone. She is a little shy when she first meets you but warms up really quick. Her new family would have to agree to frequent grooming's for this little lady so she never has to go through that pain from the past again,. She has lived in a home were Spanish and English were spoken. Thank you for your interest in adopting a pet from Guardians of the Green Mile Inc. We are a group of individuals that have come together to save the lives of animals that are in danger of being euthanized. Was rescued from a high kill shelter after she was found as a stray. She is young and full of energy. She gets along with the other dog in the foster home. not sure about cat's though so take caution when you do an intro. She is working on her manner's and for now we will say she should be with older home to knock anyone down. She enjoys walks but she is working on her fear of cars. She is fully vetted. spayed and micro chipped/ Her adoption fee is $250.00 Here is the link to our Adoption or Foster Application http://jotform.us/form/43196636952162 Not too many shelter dogs have a clean slate, so we consider Lexi to be a diamond in the ruff! She is a sweet girl with looks to boot, and already has a fantastic educational start after completing a two week long course in e-training. She has learned many commands such as sit, down, stay, recall and much more, and is proficient in all of them. Does great with other dogs but can be a bit much for some so slow and thoughtful introductions are strongly encouraged. Only those who truly want a training partner need apply, as this girl is looking to complete her associates, bachelors, maste rs and doctorate when all is said and done! Shes a smart working girl who will be an amazing lifetime partner ! All of GOTGM pets are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Please click on this link and take the quiz before you summit your application http://puppytales.com.au/2015/03/05/is-a-puppy-dog-right-for-you/ Meet Bubba! Bubba became a Guardians dog over Easter Weekend when his elderly owner came, with tears streaming down his face, asking the rescue for help. He was the victim of a very large monetary scam and was getting evicted from his house, and Bubba's only option was the shelter. Of course, we had to help him out. Bubba is an absolutely beautiful, snowy white Bulldog mix who weighs 80 lbs. He is 3 years old and has a medium-low energy level. Bubba is one special big boy! We believe Bubba has some hearing impairment, which is quite possible given his white coloring. He does seem to hear certain noises/pitches, and at time tries to figure out where sound is coming from. He does seem not respond to verbal commands, his name, squeaky toys, hand clapping, etc, so we have started teaching Bubba hand signals, and he is working very hard on learning them! Bubba has made so much progress since being in his foster home. He is seriously the SWEETEST, goofiest boy ever and is a giant LOVER. We continue to try to understand him and learn how to communicate with him. Patience and understanding are key! He melts my heart every time he looks at me with that precious face of his. Bubba LOVES car rides- he could ride in the car all day long, sniffing all those smells coming in through the windows. He also loves spending time hanging out in the backyard- from shade bathing to playing a little fetch. He even tries to make friends with bees! Bubba has been doing wonderful on his daily walks in his freedom harness- he even jogs with us now, but he can be quite strong. He is super friendly and loves to meet people. In fact, he thinks everyone we encounter should stop and say hi. He adores toys and bones of all kinds- he especially loves playing tug with his foster sister, chewing on his favorite antler, and pulling all the toys out of the toy bin. He has zero issues with dominance, aggression, or possession of any kind. Bubba amazingly has no signs of separation anxiety and is left loose in the family room/kitchen while left alone, and has never chewed on anything that is not his. Since this works wonderful, there is no reason to introduce him to a crate and through his schedule off. We think a home with another dog would be great for Bubba. It's really hard to say how he would do as an only dog; Bubba is very in tune to the pack life, and reacts and follows his foster siblings when they react, and he also LOVES having a playmate/companion around. Taking a few training classes with a knowledgeable trainer would help you learn about him. Bubba is kid friendly, but not recommended for really little kids- he is a big boy and can get wound up at times during play. Oh, and NO cats! So, with all this being said, if Bubba is not hearing impaired (because I hate to declare that he is and be wrong), then he is just a somewhat stubborn good ole bulldog who is a bit of an aloof, lumbering, chill guy with some "spunky puppy moments", who will love you dearly forever and ever, as long as lots of peanut butter and belly rubs are involved. Part of a Hoarding case. She is a tiny pocket fun sized long haired Chihuahua about 4 pounds, Don't let her size fool you she is tiny but mighty. She gets a long great with the other dogs in the foster home. She leaves the cat's alone. Tinkerbell is fully vetted and Spayed. She is ready to find her forever family.. She will require grooming but only a few times a year. She is potty trained and tells you that she needs to go outside. She is very much a lap Diva, Her favorite place is laying with her foster Mom's and snuggling while watching TV. She would be perfect for the family that lives in an Apartment because of her small size. She would be great with children that are respectful to animals and that are careful to not step on her. Would you like a snuggle buddy? Tinkerbell is your girl./ Thank you for your interest in adopting a pet from Guardians of the Green Mile Inc. We are a group of individuals that have come together to save the lives of animals that are in danger of being euthanized. We raise funds to fully vet the animals and to provide them with a stable home until they are adopted. All of the dogs in our Rescue are in Foster homes while they are looking for their forever family. The only time we put a dog in boarding is for a Foster to go on vacation if another Foster is not able to care for them. We appreciate your taking the time to fill out the application to adopt one of our Guardians of the Green Mile pets. The questions that we ask are to only find the right fit for all of our dogs and the families that will be adopting them. Adoption fees are $250 for dogs that are 1 year and older. $300 for puppies under 1 year. Included in the adoption fee: All animals will be fully vetted, micro chipped and spayed or neutered. (Deposit of $50.00 required if they are not old enough to have the surgery) Renter’s will be required to submit a copy of their lease agreement to verify Landlord and also All Fosters and Adopters that have personal animals must be spayed / neutered. Age appropriate and healthy enough for surgery, we will verify that with the reference call to your Veterinarian. We are 100% volunteer operated and will process your application within a few days to a week depending on volunteer availability. We will be checking with your veterinarian and personal references, please let them know ahead of time. Applicants will be interviewed and require a home visit before being approved to adopt or foster a dog from GOTGM. Please click on this link and take the quiz before you summit your application http://puppytales.com.au/2015/03/05/is-a-puppy-dog-right-for-you/ Sophia was born Lucy on Oct 2 2013. She was adopted and then returned after 3 years. She was not comfortable with the new baby after the baby started crawling. But her BFF is 6 now, she was 3 when they got her. Sadly they had to return her to us. This is the Bio her Foster / Trainer wrote for her. She has been in Training since Thanksgiving weekend. Hello All! I'd like to introduce Ms. Sophia! She's a super sweet, lovey girl who loves to go on walks, snuggle on the couch (or in bed) and play fetch with her squeaky tennis ball (she pretty much carries it everywhere!). She's perfectly content in her kennel if you have to leave. Her house training is outstanding. She's a little on the shy side which causes her to be fearful of other dogs and small children. So, she would do best as an only dog, in a home with no small children. She's been hanging at my house for the past few weeks and we've been working on her obedience and general manners, as well as bringing her out of her shell a bit. She is available for adoption through the Guardians of the Green Mile. You can fill out an adoption application at www.gotgm.org. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If you know someone who may be interested, please have them contact me with any questions. At the very least, I'm asking everyone I know to please share her info so we can find her an awesome home to call her own. Bonnie is a super sweet cuddle bug. She would do best in a quite home with no children. Not sure how she would do with Cat's. But dogs she is fine.
