Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Gotti! He’s a sweet, playful boy born Oct 2013. He is fully potty-trained and crate-trained. He has spent a lot of time around children and would love some older kids to grow up with. One of the best things about Gotti is how incredibly sweet he is. He loves to snuggle, and cuddle time is just as important as play time to him. Gotti loves to run outside and play in the snow and would love a yard to play in. Gotti tolerates cats that don't mind dogs, but a slow introduction is best. He likes learning new skills and already knows: sit, down, stop, stay, wait, follow when prompted while walking on a leash, back, wait to leave the door/kennel, he even sits still to have his nails clipped! Gotti also loves riding in the car. Gotti is an exceptional dog with a huge desire to please and be a good boy and he can't wait to be picked to join your family! Gotti will need to go to a home with a fenced in yard. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet! A home visit is required prior to adoption. Wags & Whiskers adopts animals within a 60 mile radius of the Twin Cities or a 30 minute radius of Duluth, Rochester, and Mankato. Thank you for choosing to adopt! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 280. Hi, my name is Marty. I am male Chocolate Lab Mix (Maybe some Hound as well) DOB 12/21/04 and 65 lbs. I am originally from Cabot, Arkansas and could not wait to get up here to Minnesota. Plus, I have just completed my heartworm treatment therefore; I am ready to find my new home. The vet thinks I am more 10 - 11 years in age due to my spunkiness energy around the yard and I have no signs of arthritis as well. Due to the heartworm disease; I am underweight so m y foster mom said I need to eat more to get my manly figure back. She thinks my ideal weight should be around 70 lbs. There are advantages of being an older dog, I already am potty trained, crate trained (I do have free roam of the house) I am a non-destructive chewer and only play with doggie toys. Did I mention I love food? I’m food motived so much so, I’m a counter surfer. My foster mom is teaching me NOT to jump on the counters as that is not what a gentlemen does. I do not jump on people and I do enjoy looking out the window from time to time. I do tend to get excited when I hear or see someone; I bark and howl to get their attention so, it’s best that I live in a home with no shared walls. Do you have pesky squirrels in your yard? No problem, I’ll chase them up the tree and out of the yard for you. Sometimes I think cats are like squirrels and like to chase them, so I shouldn't live with cats. I suppose you can say I am a well-mannered, large dog, wise in my doggie years and very calm, but still can play with the best of them. I am good with dogs of all sizes. My favorite thing to do is sit on the couch where we watch animal planet while you give me belly rubs and I fall asleep on your lap. I enjoy playing fetch, I can retrieve a tennis ball and drop it at your feet (I’m good for about 3 -4 times chasing the ball then I’m tired). My recall is pretty good as I come running when I’m called. I love my doggie bed where I can nap all day until my foster mom comes home. I enjoy walks; I do pull a little so my foster mom is teaching leash manners I'm just so excited to see what my new neighborhood has to offer. I do great on car rides too, I enjoy putting my head out of the window where the breeze flap through my jowls. I eventually lay down and dream of my new family. Overall, I am perfect companion for someone who wants a senior dog who still has some spunky energy. Are you my fur ever home? Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 380. Artemisia, known as Sia in her foster home, is a gorgeous German Shepherd mix who was born in November of 2015. She is a very sweet and loyal girl who loves other dogs and does okay with cats. Sia loves being with her people, is very affectionate, and walks nicely on a leash. She is also very smart and enjoys learning new things, and is especially attentive when there are high value treats like cheese involved. Sia is house trained when kept on a schedule and is learning all about crate training, although she would prefer if her people were home all the time. Sia does great in the car and would enjoy a family who likes road trips as much as her. Sia is a special girl and is what we call a tripod as she only has three legs. Don't let that fool you as she gets around just fine! Because of this, it will be important she maintains a slim and healthy weight to keep any extra pressure off her joints, which should not be hard as she makes such a great walking buddy. We do not know Sia's background, but she can be a little shy with new people and in new situations so it will be important her forever family recognizes this and is willing to spend time working on building her confidence. Sia would be best in a home without shared walls. Overall, Sia is a great dog who is looking for a quiet and patient home with someone who can help her build some confidence. For the right person, Sia is going to make a wonderful family pet. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Lucy Lala D3...

Posted Breed: Terrier / Bichon Frise / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 380. Lucy Lala, known as Lala in her foster home, is truly a dog that has overcome the situation that someone else put her in. I encourage you to read more about her and know what a special girl she has become. Lala has been in our foster home for now over a year. Upon first getting her, we knew to expect a shy dog. But what is sad is that someone never socialized her. Dogs should be petted, given love, patience and a warm home to lay their heads in. Although it is not known for certain, it appears Lala was a puppy mill mom. That meant as foster parents we needed to provide her the warm house she needed and the space around her to come out of her shell and to become a dog. We continue to feel blessed with the progress she has made and each day she greets us at the door we feel like we hit we jackpot with her. Lala is a dog that will forever warm your heart. Is she one that will jump up onto your lap, give you kisses and be your foot warmer? Probably not. But there is one thing she will promise you and that is to be your best friend without the normal doggie best friend’s tactics. She wants to be in the same room as her humans and doggie friends but doesn't want to be right up in your face. She will greet you each day with smiles and a tail wagging but doesn't want you to give her big pets and rub her belly. She will sleep quietly at night and be on her best behavior while you are at work, and no kennel is needed! It is hard to find a family that wants these characteristics but our hearts tell us there is a family out there that will understand. Some of the traits we are looking for in a home for her are: A home with another dog so she has a companion. She learns best from other animals. She would not like a friend though that likes to play rough and tough. Just somewhere there to tell secrets to in the middle of the night and to provide her confidence. A home with a secured fence. Lala will probably always be a flight risk therefore we would want a fence for her in case she gets scared. Some to 100% love her for whom she is and not try to 'fix' her into what she is not. We have started Lala on some anxiety medications and it seems to help her when things can become overwhelming (i.e. too many people come to the house or just new environment). We understand this may sound like alot, but truly Lala is a sweet girl who well just started off life wrong. She is looking for that perfect family that we know is out there. ** Little Lucy (aka Lala) is built more like a terrier weighing approx. 35 lbs. We require a fenced in yard for Lala to keep her safe and secure in addition for another dog she can continue to learn from. Please understand this when applying for her. Posted Breed: Beagle / Pug / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 280. Hi, I'm Charlie! I'm a distinguished senior gentleman puggle looking for a home to spend my retirement years! I'm a handsome medium-sized guy and I even come potty trained! (I apologize, but sometimes I have a nervous potty when I go to new places, other than that I'm really good with outside potty) I am 10 years old, but I also have a clean bill of health and I'm all up-to-date on all my shots, so no worries there. I've met cats, dogs, and even kids and I'm pretty cool with all of them. Sometimes I need slow intros to new friends because my eyes aren't quite what they used to be and I get startled. I sit really politely for treats and I take them nicely from the palm of your hand (if you give a treat to me with your fingers I might get excited and accidentally chomp). My foster family has really enjoyed having me- I don't jump up on anyone and I stick to my toys for chewing (no furniture) Honestly, except for my manners with food, I'm a really polite houseguest. My foster family usually gates me in a different room when they eat, just so I'm not tempted to sample dinner. I also like to be fed alone, I get a little nervous when other critters get close to my bowl. I'm slowly learning to trust my foster family and getting more and more affectionate everyday- sometimes an older gentleman like me needs some warm-up time. At bedtime, I enjoy sleeping next to your bed on my doggie bed. I might sniff around the room for a few minutes before laying down, but I just always want to know my terrain. As for my voice, I only give a bay here or there when I'm lonely or shut outside the room you're in- I really like my humans and always want them near!!! I'm good in my crate during the day though and will only bark once or twice at first. I'll gladly spend time napping in there when you go out. When we go for walks, I'm a very busy guy and my nose rarely stops sniffing. My foster family cracks up at how much I need to smell. I'm not much of a tugger on the leash and I like a nice, leisurely pace. When I'm happy and playful, my foster family thinks I'm hilariously cute, I like to shake my toys and run around like crazy! My favorite stuffie toy is my hedgehog and I don't like anyone to take him from me when I have him- we've been together for a long time and I love him very much! Other than when I get super playful, I'm a really mellow dude and I spend most of my time sniffing and being your shadow! Oh, and I almost forgot- I am incredibly polite in the car... so I'll be a very good boy when I'm on my way home with you! My foster family absolutely adores me (I mean, how couldn't you? I'm so handsome!) and they'd keep me forever, but they think I deserve more one-on-one/quiet time with my humans. I really like my foster brother, puggles think alike, but sometimes he's a little too fast for me. I think I'd like a home to myself or with someone more my age and energy level. I really like relaxing with older dogs. Well, that's a little bit about me, Charlie! Please make me your #1 guy and take me home with you, I can tell I love you already! I love you from the bottom of my little doggy heart and I can't wait to meet you! Charlie P.S. I'm a funny guy and my silly foster family has many nicknames for me and I answer to most of them (Charles, Chuck, Chuckles, Chuckwagon, Charlie Bear, you know, funny stuff like that!) I'm a 6 year old Pit Bull- according to my foster mom I'm a typical pittie. I think she means that I'm very happy and full of energy. I'm 63 pounds and pretty strong, I don't mean to pull on walks but I get really excited by other people and animals so I want to go meet them. My foster mom says we are working on my manners! I currently live with another dog and a cat- I find the cat very fascinating but he doesn't seem to want to be my friend. I haven't spent time with young kids, but my foster mom thinks that with some training I would be great with them (her concern is that I don't know how big and strong I am and that I might unintentionally knock over someone smaller than me!). Overall, my foster mom says I'm a good dog, who will make a great companion to the right person! Fill out an application if you think you might be that person for me! This sweet adorable compact pit is only 40 lbs and the snuggliest, sweetest pup around. Her name is Lydia, but her foster mom likes to call her Pig because she snorts and grunts just like a little pig. And just like a pig who roots in the mud looking for food, Pig will do just that, but instead of mud, she roots through blankets to snuggle up to her beloved human. She is a complete goofball and makes her foster family laugh on a daily basis. Pig is very devoted to her humans and while she has not been around kids yet, she likely will do very well. She loves to play fetch, chew on bones, and give kisses. She also loves other dogs, all she wants to do is play, play, play. Pig would do best in a home without cats though, she is just a little too interested. This little girl really is the best dog and will show her family exactly where the saying, "Dog is man's best friend," comes from. Are you ready to show this girl all the love she deserves? *Like many white Bullies, Lydia has seasonal allergies. These are controlled with an allergy med that works well for her. I am a very sweet girl who loves to snuggle and sleep under the covers. I am a little shy and sometimes strangers and loud noises scare me but once I am your friend I am happy to sit in your lap all day. I have been through two levels of obedience, which has helped me learn better manners and has made me less scared of the world around. I also love walks and doing zoomies! My foster mom says I am high energy and would benefit from a home with an active lifestyle; because of my high energy I would do best with older children that I can’t accidently knock down. Being a princess means I prefer all attention on me. I would do best in a home without cats and I am selective about my doggie friends. All I need is a structured schedule and a warm bed to sleep in!
