If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Fini

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Fini is a neutered male terrier mix, about 30 pounds and approximately 1 year old. He currently lives in a foster home with a doggie door, but even when the door is closed he is very good about waiting to go outside to potty. He is crate trained, likes children best, and is gentle when taking food. He walks very well on a leash but doesn't really know any commands yet like "sit". Fini is very fearful of people in general and learning to work t...hrough his fears. In spite of his fears of being approached by people he has a desire to be near people that is beginning to show through. He is a kind, gentle and calm spirit underneath his fear issues and continued love, patience and working with him so he grows confident will bring out the wonderful family member he is meant to be. He currently lives with 5 other dogs and a cat. He doesn't show much interest in the cat, and he plays with all the 5 dogs. He is shy when being introduced to new dogs but with proper introductions he does fine. He is very submissive to other dogs by nature. Fini is still learning what items are appropriate to chew on and which ones are not, but he loves toys and bones and redirecting him to chew on those is easy. Fini's adoption fee of $125.00 includes his microchip, spay and current DHPP and Rabies vaccine.

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Whisper's adoption fee of $125.00 includes her microchip, spay and current DHPP and Rabies vaccine. Whisper is one of three mothers that was surrendered to us with their nineteen puppies. They came from a home that showed them much love for the year the dogs lived with them, but the family was clearly in over their heads with the dogs. Whisper is an incredible companion. She wants to be with her human and is game for anything. You want to hike, Whisper wants to hike. You want to relax and read a book, she'll nap quietly next to you. She loves to play with dogs. She is not a fan of cats. She walks nicely on a leash. Whisper is kennel trained and potty trained. Whisper continues to work on her house manners. Whipser gets along lovely with other dogs. I would not recommend a home with cats or chickens for Whisper.

      Fefe

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Fefe is a spayed female terrier mix, about 30 pounds. She has some fear issues but has come to love people especially when they approach her calmly. She like children especially. She lives with a cat and is curious about him, but doesn't chase him and if he were friendly I think she would be fine with him. Fefe is about 2 years old. She ...currently has a dog door but when the dog door is closed she is very good about waiting to go outside to potty. She is crate trained and takes treats very gently. She loves to cuddle and has started learning how to "sit" when asked to. She also loves to play and cool off in a small swimming pool. Fefe seems to have never lived in a house before coming to her foster home, which is a real shame because she is a loving family member who wants to be near people. Because she never lived in a home, she never learned that chewing things up is a "no-no". She has begun learning that and is doing well but still needs to have an attentive family that helps her continue to learn the house rules of being a house dog. Fefe is also fearful when meeting strange dogs, but when properly introduced she does very well and tends to be submissive. She currently lives with 5 other dogs and a cat and has had various dogs come and visit periodically. When she is introduced with a fence or gate between her and the new dog and she knows the new dog is not going to hurt her she is fine. Fefe is a loving, kind and gentle personality, she just never had the opportunity to live with people who love her and take the time to teach her about all that life has to offer when living with people. Now that she is learning that she is doing wonderful, but learning these things takes time. She is very bonded with another dog in rescue named Fini. Fefe's adoption fee of $125.00 includes her microchip, spay and current DHPP and Rabies vaccine. A $11.00 license transfer fee will also be collected at time of adoption.

      Sedona

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Bullypit
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sedona is a diva and the ultimate couch potato. Sedona has come along way since being pulled from the shelter with her pal Winslow in 2016. Sedona is a creature of habit so naturally she does not like new things...they tend to scare her. Sedona very much enjoys sleeping on the sofa. Sedona's favorite things to do are snuggle with her family and eat. She gets along nicely with her four foster siblings; they range in size from 40-80 pounds. Sedona does not like cats. Sedona does enjoy nice strolls through the neighborhood as long as her more confident foster brother is by her side. Sedona would do best in a home with another dog who is confident and friendly and would be willing to accept her as a friend. Sedona does know some commands such as "sit," "no," "up," and "come." We suspect Sedona was an outside dog prior to coming into rescue. She has come a long way on potty training, but she still has some accidents. Her adopters will need to continue working with her on going outside. The foster home does not have a dog door so it is unknown if that would make a difference. She is kenneled while her foster is at work but she does not have accidents in the kennel anymore! Sedona is very scared of car rides, while this very well could be due to her foster moms driving, she is scared enough in cars that anyone looking for a travel buddy should not consider her as their travel partner. Sedona's adoption fee of $125.00 includes her microchip, spay and current DHPP and Rabies vaccine.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Doberman Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). See Clay's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Have you been waiting for a really handsome guy, who always wears a tuxedo? I think we’ve found him! Clay is a beautiful, strong Staffordshire Terrier mix. He was rescued from the shelter because of problems with his ears. It turned out he had severe allergies, which had never been treated. In The Arms of Angels paid for an extensive ear surgery on both ears. After a time for recovery, Clay is ready to find his forever home. Due to the untreated ears, he can no longer hear, but is very responsive to hand signals and the vibrations from loud claps, snaps or whistles. Clay is a very loving dog, who only wants to please his person. He has learned some basic commands and is very food motivated. His favorite hobby is chewing on bones. He also like to wrestle stuffed animals. The stuffed animal always loses and gets distributed fairly evenly throughout your house. But, he loves it! Clay likes other dogs, but is a little too curious and rambunctious for cats. He would do best with dogs his size or larger. He likes to go for walks and, with his boundless energy, would probably make a great companion for a runner. Clay is crate trained and housebroken. His spot is stretched out on the couch—right next to his people. Clay will need to have grain-free food to keep his allergies at bay. He also benefits from an allergy pill when the pollen count is high. His ideal family will be very active and not afraid to take on a dog that needs accommodations for his lack of hearing and allergies. He is great with kids, but wouldn’t be much fun for kids under 10, due to his exuberance and size. Clay's adoption fee of $85.00 includes his microchip, neuter and current DHPP and Rabies vaccine.
