Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Stewie is an awesome boy. He was born January 2012. He is very friendly, has moderate energy, LOVES to go for car rides, enjoys chewing his bones, playing with his balls and loves the good ole butt and back scratches. Stewie can be a "rough" lover at times. He doesn't mean to get overly excited with some loving, but he just gets very happy with his pettings. He knows all basic commands and is great with obedience, he is so very smart !!!!! Stewie also knows how to kiss on command ! Stewie needs to be the only pet (no cats, no dogs) in the household. This is not to say he is dog aggressive, he simply is too rough for the majority of dogs and can get possessive of food and toys. If there are any kids in the house, they should be old enough to participate in dog care and able to follow directions. Stewie even has his one Face Book fan page : stewie adopt me. Go check out some more great pictures of this guy !!! Adoption fee for Stewie is $75.00

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Piper came to us on 9/14/16 from the Saginaw County animal shelter where she had been residing for about 3 months. She was surrendered by her previous family. We can't figure out why as she is an amazing dog and will make someone a great companion. Piper is a very sweet, loving girl. She is intelligent and catches on to expectations and boundaries quickly. She is very submissive and LOVES getting her belly rubbed. She craves affection and love. Piper will literally crawl right into your lap And melts right in to you! She is very well behaved and pretty mellow but she does love to run around the yard and chase a ball.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Chance was sitting at GCAC for a pretty long time. Nobody was willing to help this boy and his time was running out. So we brought him into our group. Upon going to the vets, we discovered he was heart worm positive. So Chance is currently going through treatment right now. Once he goes through treatment at the end of December, he will be neutered about a month or two after that. Chance is a younger boy. About a year and a half. He is a very sweet boy with a great disposition. He adjusts very easily to his surroundings and listens very well to what you ask of him. He LOVES to play with other dogs. And loves to play with toys. He is good with cats and kids and is very friendly with all people. His foster mom says he is a very snuggly, loyal boy. He is very smart and responds extremely well when you ask something of him. He has a gentle soul and soft eyes. Always alert on his senses. If he hears something, he will let you know. He has a gift too.....if someone don't seem safe to him, he barks and tells you. He has absolutely no aggression towards other dogs or people. He gets along with all people, but really does love his ladies. Women are his soft spot. He just wants to be by his humans He doesn't jump. He loves kids. He is a submissive boy and would do good with a calmer dog but does love to play with anybody willing to play with him. He will be neutered before being adopted, he is current on all vaccines, free of internal parasites and is micro chipped. His adoption fee is $150

He is an American Bulldog/Boxer mix and if you know the American Bulldog breed you know that he is stubborn, dominant, and protective. He is also one of the most loyal, smartest, and affectionate dogs there is. He is a big goofball and will constantly keep you entertained. Bruno will make someone an extremely loyal companion He is active and playful and loves attention. He can work or play all day long, and will happily curl up at your feet for a nice belly rub at the end of the day. He went through a month long board and train program that provided him with the basic obedience and structure that he needed. He is A VERY OBEDIENT boy that listens very well when you ask him to do something. He is smart as a whip !! He also loves to go for runs and walks, play tug-of-war, and fetch. Bruno's adopters will also receive 3 free training sessions from his trainer if the new adopters would like. He also would be good with other dogs his size or larger and ones that are more laid back, but he also likes to romp around the yard with another dog as well. Bronx - ADOP...

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Lake Ann, MI
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). Bronx was a stray found in Ohio. He ended up at the shelter where we pulled him and brought him into our group. We guess him to be about 7 years old, even though he doesn't look all that old. Bronx is a very sweet boy. He loves his people and enjoys spending time with them. We believe Bronx would do best in a home with only females. He has never went after a male dog, but sometimes he will give them a look that makes us feels he would do best with just female dogs. But don't think he would be good with cats though. He listens pretty well when you ask something of him and does not mind being crated. He loves going for car rides too. He is not in a home with kids but we feel he would still be good with them. When Bronx first came to us, we did a full panel blood profile work up on him. His liver enzymes were way off the chart. We put him on Danamarin and another liver supplement. Within two weeks, his liver blood count came down significantly and is back to normal. So the vet was thinking maybe he got into something that made him sick. He also had a UTI that was treated and had a golf ball size hernia that was removed. He was also neutered. He is house broken, current on all vaccines, heart worm negative and was treated for internal parasites. He is also micro chipped.

      Kane

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Lake Ann, MI
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). A note from Kane's foster mom........Are you looking for a very special dog to add to your home? Kane just might be right for you. Kane has been with us since January 2016 and his foster mom says this boy really has a zest for life that just touches your heart. This boy has been through so much but continues to love every minute of his life. Grab a toy and he is ready to play. Get his leash and he will walk anywhere with you. (Needs a little work in this area as he pulls a bit from excitement) Want to cuddle on the couch ? yep you got it ! He is all for it. He does wear diapers when he is not in his crate or outside but he doesn't mind at all. He stands and lets me put them on! You see Kane is eager to please. So if you have a special spot in your heart for a dog that has had a rough start you might want to consider meeting Kane. Kane LOVES playing with other dogs and is great with kids, even small kids. He is a very easy going boy. He is charming, sweet, funny and always happy-go-lucky. He is neutered, current on all vaccines, heart worm negative, free of internal parasites and is micro chipped. His adoption fee has been sponsored as we are just looking for that really special home that will give this boy so much love and understand his medical needs. Now, a brief description of what is going on with Kane's medical..... He had bladder stones removed in 2015 and was leaking urine, even after having the bladder stones removed. Due to the leakage, Kane's prior owners made him an outside dog. Soon after, he was surrendered to a shelter who contacted GLBR. After numerous tests, seeing the specialists at MSU and surgery, among several other doctors, the doctors have come to the conclusion that Kane's urinary leakage cannot be fixed. Fortunately he is very happy and comfortable wearing doggie diapers! Kane is also prone to urinary tract infections which will need to be carefully managed. Yes, he has some medical issues, but the bottom line is this boy is WORTH the extra effort and any family who adds Kane into their home will be SO lucky!! He has handled all of his doctor visits with a smile and everyone raves about how wonderful he is. Kane is with a foster home who loves him very much, but he can't stay there forever. Kane deserves to find himself a permanent loving home, so let's share his story to help him get there

      Breed: Boxador
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Lake Ann, MI
Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Cherish was sitting in a shelter for a couple of months and was not handling it too well. So we brought her into our rescue. She is about 8 years old, and a boxer mix. Cherish is a HAPPY, HAPPY girl and is very appreciative and happy with anything she gets. She listens very well and is very responsive to correction. She would do best as either the only dog or possible with an older dog, like herself, that are more laid back. She doesn't care for the bouncy, active dogs and will ignore them for the most part, unless they get into her space or antagonize her. She would probably do best with older kids too. Her foster mom says she can be a sassy girl and thinks she is a princess at times. She does listen well but there are times she may become stubborn and you have to remind her that she is not in charge. Cherish is about 8 years old, spayed, current on vaccines, heart worm negative and free of internal parasites. She is also micro chipped. Her adoption fee is $100

      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Lake Ann, MI
Posted Breed: Pointer / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Casey is about four years old, and appears to be a Terrier / Pointer mix. She is in good health, housebroken and good with other dogs. Her original owner says that she is good with kids and cats too. She is a sweet and funny girl, with a mature energy level, playful but not crazy. She can be crated or left loose when her people aren't home, without accidents or chewing up household items. She does cry and bark some when first left alone. She would do best with a home where she is not left alone for long periods of time. Casey likes affection, likes to chase a ball, and likes to snuggle and wrestle with people and other dogs. She likes to nap with her people when allowed. She is a mature dog, and does not require constant attention. She is full of personality and is a very sweet girl. She is fully vetted and microchipped. She is temporarily living in a home in Shelby Twp, MI with her foster dad and two other dogs.
