More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Ruby Dee

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Ruby Dee! Ruby is one smart cookie and loves to keep busy! Check out her new videos where Ruby Dee shows off the tricks she's just learned, and her new agility training! Her ideal home would be with a single person owner that: Has owned and trained dogs in the past Will give her regular exercise Will be consistent and firm with training and mental activities Will work on leash reactivity and leash training Is possibly interested in agility training or something similar Ruby has been doing well at her current foster home. She is house trained and goes potty right away when she goes outside. During the day she gets free run of the house, but she is kenneled at night and eagerly runs in for her special bedtime treat! . Her favorite daytime hangout is on the back of the couch looking out the window according to the webcam! Ruby likely has some herding breed in her so she can be a bit reactive and uses her voice to communicate. She will bark and growl at her foster owners if she wants to play or if they’re doing something that she wants to be included in. Ruby loves to play with her humans and has a soft play bite. She sometimes plays with toys but not always. She will also bark at other dogs in the house and bump them with her butt to get them to play! This girl will do best in a home with no other dogs or ones that are on the calm side. She has had some preliminary exposure to cats, and she was cautious but curious - so, we think she may do well in a home with feline siblings. Ruby is as smart as they come and learned the following commands in no time flat: sit, shake, down, spin, and play dead! She LOVES these training opportunities and the mental stimulation really challenges and calms her! This girl knows the word "walk" and loves to go and does well on her walking harness, but she could use some work on being polite on a leash when she sees other dogs. She also loves to have some cuddle time on the couch, and will quickly curl up in a ball for a nap right next to her humans. Ruby does tend to get protective of her humans sometimes, so she needs people who are dog-savvy, know how to read doggy body language, and can be a strong leader to teach her good habits. Because of this protective nature, we would not recommend Ruby go to a home with children under 10 years old. Could your home be the forever home for Ruby Dee??? Check out his photo collage! Dennis is a modern man and has his own Instagram page Dennisthefosterdog Whoever adopts him will smile EVERY DAY... GUARANTEED! Posted Breed: Pekingese (long coat). Adoption Fee $300 Meet Charlie Chan! Charlie Chan was picked up as a stray and left unclaimed at a shelter. This little guy’s coat was extremely matted when he was brought in (these pictures were taken the same day). We could hardly get a collar over his head since he had fist-sized mats on his ears and under his chin. One of the local groomers took him and worked on him for 2 days, and he now looks like a different dog beneath all that matted hair! Even though he has lost most of his "locks", he is feeling MUCH better and knows that it will just be a matter of time before he is looking handsome again! Charlie Chan has a nice personality and walks well on a leash... although slowly! A home with no young children is recommended for Charlie Chan. Midwest Animal Rescue is looking for loving, caring, foster homes for rescued dogs to live while they await being adopted. All of the rescued dogs are placed in private homes. The more foster homes that we have, the more dogs we can save from high-kill shelters that are overflowing with homeless dogs. Most of the dogs we bring to Midwest Animal Rescue are very well-adjusted dogs. Some might need to be spayed/neutered, and some may need medical attention due to infections or injuries. A few of the dogs might need obedience training so they learn the basic commands. Some might need help learning to be housebroken. Your foster dog's medical needs are covered by our veterinarians. The rescue will lend you a crate if you need one, and even some dog food if you need it. Our trainers will work with your dog if it needs extra training help to help it become more adoptable. You will be supported by one of our representatives throughout the fostering time, and they will explain everything that fostering entails. Fostering a rescued dog is very rewarding. Whether the dog you are helping is the perfect companion, or if it needs extra help, every dog knows that their life has been spared, and they are grateful that they have a bed to sleep on, and good food in their dish, and clean water to drink.
