Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Adoption Fee $350 Sookie has made quite the journey into rescue. Her life was saved by many volunteers who fell in love with her and fought for her life. I have never had a dog that I get more emails (asking for updates) from shelter workers, transporters, and other volunteers whose hearts she touched on her journey. In her current foster home she does great in or out of a crate. Her foster says she is a people pleaser and do whatever it takes to make you happy. She can be picky about her dog and cat friends. And she walks great on a leash. Please feel free to fill out an ADOPTION APPLICATION by clicking on the ADOPT button below. Thank You! or //

More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Click the picture and help us create even more new beginnings in 2018! Adoption Fee: 375.00 Plus Tax Adair is an adorable Doxie mix that is looking for her forever home. Her and her sister Amara were given up and looking for that forever home that will keep them for life. Adair is a little nervous so a fenced yard is required to adopt her. She does bond to her people very strongly but due to her being a little fearful when first placed in a new home the safest bet would be a fenced yard. She has lived with dogs and kids and has done great. I recommend older children that do not have such fast movements as this might scare her. She is crated during the day and doing well with setting up a routine for going potty outside. She loves to be up on the couch with you cuddling away. She is such a gentle girl that just needs a family to take their time with her and teach her that she is safe and she is loved. Adair is excited to start her new life with a new forever family. Before MARS, Sharla Mae was in a cell for TWO years... 730 days. Can you imagine how good freedom felt once she escaped the over-crowded Arkansas shelter? Oh boy was she a happy girl! How could anyone pass up that sweet face?! The first thing anyone notices about her is her amazing spirit! T his girl hopped out of the transport van after a two day excursion and greeted everyone she met with a wiggle butt and sweet kisses. She continues to endear us with her laid back personality and gentle soul. Now that she is enjoying a comfortable, warm bed and home life, Sharla Mae discovered this thing called "Cat"! While she loves them and wants to play with them, we're thinking a home without them is probably best as she is learning boundaries. Poor girl is also heartworm positive! She just can't catch a break! Fret not though, she has been treated and is almost done with treatment. For now, she needs to stay quiet to give her heart a rest to heal. She'll be ready to play again very soon though! Think she might be your new best friend? Think you want to give her a last name? Click the grey "Adopt Me!" button below and fill out an application. Sharla is waiting for you! Thank you! or //

Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed. Click the picture and help us create even more new beginnings in 2018! Adoption Fee: $375 Meet Tigger: Tigger is a loving, smart and comical dog. the name Tigger fits her well as she jumps straight up like Tigger on Winnie the Pooh. Because she reminded us of another wonderful dog, we call her Bailey. Tigger is 45 pounds of affection and muscle. She loves to play tag and run circles around you. She is happy to fetch a ball. Depending on her mood she may even bring it back. She enjoys being outside and is invisible fence trained. She understands what a leash symbolizes and is working on walking without pulling. While we are not runners she appears to be a great dog for someone who is. When in the yard, she breaks into a full run and the joy is evident. We've also discovered she likes to play in the water when down at the lake. Tigger has more of a "me first" personality. She is getting along well with our mellow Cava-Poo and plays with our cats, who sometimes remind her to back off. Another dog her size would bring her great joy, we think. Tigger is good about going in her kennel. She is house-trained and has not been a chewer. Recently we started letting her sleep at the foot of our sons bed. She's quiet and sleeps as long as he does. She's a total snuggler. Tiggers a great combination of well behaved and sweet. She's deserving of a forever home and is well on her way to being a loyal and loving companion. Ruby Dee

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Click the picture and help us create even more new beginnings in 2018! Meet Ruby Dee! Ruby is one smart cookie and loves to keep busy! Check out her new videos where Ruby Dee shows off the tricks she's just learned, and her new agility training! Her ideal home would be with a single person owner that: Has owned and trained dogs in the past Will give her regular exercise Will be consistent and firm with training and mental activities Will work on leash reactivity and leash training Is possibly interested in agility training or something similar Ruby has been doing well at her current foster home. She is house trained and goes potty right away when she goes outside. During the day she gets free run of the house, but she is kenneled at night and eagerly runs in for her special bedtime treat! . Her favorite daytime hangout is on the back of the couch looking out the window according to the webcam! Ruby likely has some herding breed in her so she can be a bit reactive and uses her voice to communicate. She will bark and growl at her foster owners if she wants to play or if they’re doing something that she wants to be included in. Ruby loves to play with her humans and has a soft play bite. She sometimes plays with toys but not always. She will also bark at other dogs in the house and bump them with her butt to get them to play! This girl will do best in a home with no other dogs or ones that are on the calm side. She has had some preliminary exposure to cats, and she was cautious but curious - so, we think she may do well in a home with feline siblings. Ruby is as smart as they come and learned the following commands in no time flat: sit, shake, down, spin, and play dead! She LOVES these training opportunities and the mental stimulation really challenges and calms her! This girl knows the word "walk" and loves to go and does well on her walking harness, but she could use some work on being polite on a leash when she sees other dogs. She also loves to have some cuddle time on the couch, and will quickly curl up in a ball for a nap right next to her humans. Ruby does tend to get protective of her humans sometimes, so she needs people who are dog-savvy, know how to read doggy body language, and can be a strong leader to teach her good habits. Because of this protective nature, we would not recommend Ruby go to a home with children under 10 years old. Could your home be the forever home for Ruby Dee??? Breed: Chihuahua-Shiba Inu Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shiba Inu / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Click the picture and help us create even more new beginnings in 2018! Adoption Fee $300 Ginger first arrived at MARS in 2013. Ginger has come back to MARS and is looking for a home with no kids or older kids that can respect her space and not scare her. Ginger is shy initially. She gets along great with other dogs and tends to be submissive. She's very curious about cats, but once my cat hissed at her, she backed off and acts like the cat isn't even there (except occasionally goes back to see if the cat will be friendly). Ginger is energetic and loves to run; could use a daily walk or run in a fenced area. She actually loves to be held, but you would think she doesn't because when you go to pick her up, she kicks her back feet out. But once she's in your arms, she just sits there and loves it. She is just a big snuggle bunny, very loving and smart. Ginger will stand on her back legs and hold out her arms to you. And, when you are petting her, she likes to wrap her front feet around your arm. So, so loving! Ginger is housebroken, but she will go on a pee pad if one is laid out. She does like her toys and plays with them mostly on her own. She doesn't chase a ball or "retrieve" but I've caught her playing with several toys I've given her. She's also not a big "chewer", I've tried several different bones and she's not that interested in them. Ginger doesn't really bark much, but she has on occasion barked when she hears something outside. Ginger is crate trained and will go in on her own. A lot of times I find her in her crate laying down, so I think she really likes the security of the crate. Can you give her a safe place to start her new life? Most of the dogs we bring to Midwest Animal Rescue are very well-adjusted dogs. Some might need to be spayed/neutered, and some may need medical attention due to infections or injuries. A few of the dogs might need obedience training so they learn the basic commands. Some might need help learning to be housebroken. Your foster dog's medical needs are covered by our veterinarians. The rescue will lend you a crate if you need one, and even some dog food if you need it. Our trainers will work with your dog if it needs extra training help to help it become more adoptable. You will be supported by one of our representatives throughout the fostering time, and they will explain everything that fostering entails. Fostering a rescued dog is very rewarding. Whether the dog you are helping is the perfect companion, or if it needs extra help, every dog knows that their life has been spared, and they are grateful that they have a bed to sleep on, and good food in their dish, and clean water to drink.
