More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Paris, ME
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). Dempsey is a silly, happy, bouncy Boxer boy! He's ready to be your new best friend. Like most Boxers, he's full of energy and able to keep up with most active families. Just a little too much energy and bounce for young children, though! He also has a little too much interest in cats, so a family with no other small animals would be best. You can see in the photos that Dempsey is missing his right eye. It was surgically removed due to an accident. But that doesn't slow him down any! If you are a Boxer fan, you must come in and meet this wonderful boy! Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Taco is the typical big dog in a little package. He doesn't care how small he is, he can do it all and then some. He is a "spicy" little guy with attitude and love. He loves to go for walks and to play with his squeaky toys! And he's waiting for a family to call his own. Too much for the little ones, but older kids are okay. Taco keeps everyone here at the shelter in stitches all day with his silly antics! Come in and meet him before he's gone! Breed: Boxador
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Paris, ME
Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). It's sometimes hard to tell how a dog really is when they first arrive at the shelter. Some are scared and some try to be the tough guys. It takes a few days for them to settle in and realize they are safe with an endless supply of warmth, food and love. Our little Mario was no different! He came in like a lion wanting nothing to do with anyone, but he quickly realized that he was in a good place with people that loved him. Today he is a very happy guy who will rub and lean all over you, begging for attention! He also wants to be a lap dog and will go belly up into your arms if he is allowed! He still has a lot to learn. He's a one year old pup who has had little training and we are certainly working on that with him every day. With time and consistency in his new home, he will be your new shining star! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679. Breed: Airedale Terrier-Black Mouth Cur Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Paris, ME
Posted Breed: Airedale Terrier / Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). Taylor is a love bug! A little shy at first, he will warm your heart with his sweetness once he gets to know you. He would love to have you all to his own, so a family with no other pets would be best. He loves to learn new things and is very obedient and easy to get along with. Taylor enjoys being outdoors and would be an excellent hiking companion! Because he is shy inside the shelter, someone who is willing to visit and walk him several times will be sure to help him make his transition into a new home. He would be a good candidate for a foster-to-adopt situation. Call the shelter for more information on Taylor! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679. Several meetings with Peggy will be necessary for her to get to know and trust you. When she does, you will have a devoted friend for life!
