More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Roger

      Breed: Unknown-Whippet Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: Potomac, MD
Posted Breed: Terrier / Whippet / Mixed (short coat). Online application here Adorable Roger is a 4 month old Terrier mix. He's a friendly boy who loves everyone. Like most pups his age, he is playful, affectionate and curious. He's good with other dogs, fine with all people and young enough to learn to respect cats. Because he's a baby, he'll require an adopter who is home a good part of the day to continue his training - no exceptions! He is up-to-date on age appropriate vaccines and preventatives and will need to be spayed at the age of 6 months. Please note, this pup's immune system will not be fully functioning until about 16 weeks of age and therefore, s/he is not suited for Apartment/Condo living or Town-homes without a private fenced yard and will not be able to go to public places where s/he could possibly be exposed to the germs of unvaccinated dogs, such as PetSmart/PetCo and dog parks until s/he is 16 weeks old. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which helps with the cost of routine vet care. This fee DOES NOT INCLUDE spay/neuter if the pup is not already spayed/neutered. If the animal you are adopting is not already spayed/neutered, you will be required to sign a contract legally obligating you to have the animal altered. ***Note that puppy adoption fees most often help generate revenue that goes towards older, special needs animals that need our help. Surgeries, heartworm treatment, boarding costs....all things that often result in adoptable dogs and cats being left behind to be euthanized. So adopting a puppy saves not just one life, but many! My name is Melana and I'm afraid that I get overlooked because of my color. They say black dogs have a harder time getting adopted...but look, I have these super neat markings that look like someone drizzled caramel on me. I've been told that I'm as sweet as caramel too. Someone said that I was a 45lb Aussie mix, I don't know what that is but it sounds pretty fun! I'm an introvert so sometimes people think I'm too shy. Really I just need a little bit of time to warm up. The thing that helps me relax the most is my dog friends. I sure would like to have a whole family of canine siblings but even one will do just fine. I also heard some people chatting about how I was the best snuggler in the world, to me it just makes me feel the most secure, I love a long movie! I do know how to be in my crate and they say it is good for keeping me safe when no one is home. Since I'm only 9 months old I need someone who can let me out several times a day, oh, and I also like lots of chew bones. I hope I'm not forgetting anything, I just need patient parents and fun siblings. With that I will be the happiest dog in the world. I am spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find a family to love! The adoption fee for this dog is $295, which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Online application here Hi, I’m Spicy….oh, and that’s my name, too! I am a very special Chihuahua, who is approximately 3 years old, and weigh 9 pounds. I get along ok with other dogs once I get used to them. I don’t mind being in a crate at all, but of course being with my human is my most favorite thing. I’m looking for a very special mommy and/or daddy. Before coming to PetConnect, people mistreated me, thus I am a little nervous and not quite sure about people. I would like to find a new home with very patient, understanding humans and doesn’t have little children. I tend to be afraid if you come at me too quickly OR too cautiously and when I’m afraid I get a little snippy. So you see, you have to be patient with me. I know, I’m asking a lot but my foster mom says I am a precious angel and a very good girl. After a few days I knew she wasn’t going to put up with my shenanigans, but she was so patient with me and now I totally trust her and even give her kisses. I'm house trained, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and hoping to find my special someone soon! The adoption fee for this dog is $295, which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. A resilient dog is a dog who lived 9+ years outdoors on a chain, got infected with Heartworm, and has a recurring cherry eye and is strong as ever. A resilient dog is a dog who, through all of that, is the sweetest, human loving dog anyone could want to meet. Nora is that resilient dog and she is hoping for a change of luck. Nora would like to finally become the beloved member of the family that she deserves to be. Nora holds no grudges, she appreciates a warm, fluffy bed, regular meals and an endless pile of dog toys. In return, Nora will teach you what it is to forgive and forget the things outside of our control and move forward in positivity. She may be about 10 years old, but she is living life like a new born puppy. Nora is so perfectly behaved in the house, loves and respects other dogs and cats and is house trained already. Nora is about 20lbs and we think she is a terrier type mix. Nora has been treated for Heartworm and now has some coughing when she gets very excited, so a calm household is best for her.
