More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Terrier / Mixed. **If you're viewing this on Petfinder, please visit www.petconnectrescue.org to complete our non-binding application.** Gizmo! She is a 2 year old, 25 pound, Min Schnauzer/Pit? Border Terrier/Gremlin? :) mix. With her Heinz 57 breed mix, this gal is not hypoallergenic! She is oddest looking, scruffiest, naughtiest, most athletic little loving monster going (and I totally adore her). One ear up, one down. Curly little pig tail, a scruffy mane and beautiful face. She's definitely one of a kind. She is very tenacious, loves other dogs, loves to play rough, can be a bit bossy and is curious about everything. She is extremely snuggly with humans, LOVES kids, loves men. She is not good with cats and wants to chase goats, chickens and anything that moves fast at this point but is learning fast. She is great around the horses, and would be a terrific riding partner. She was very thin when she first came and really just doesn't know what is socially acceptable behavior - but she's learning! Gizmo is the type of dog that wants to go with you everywhere. She loves the car, the tractor, the ATV, she just wants to be with you, that includes cuddling up beside you on the bed at night. Gizmo is not great in a crate, although she will tolerate it for short periods of time. Because she can be talkative at times, she is not suited for apartment/condo life. She needs to go to a home where someone is home for a good part of the day, or would like a dog who can go everywhere with them and be their constant faithful companion. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find a family to love! The adoption fee for this dog is $295, which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. A resilient dog is a dog who lived 9+ years outdoors on a chain, got infected with Heartworm, and has a recurring cherry eye and is strong as ever. A resilient dog is a dog who, through all of that, is the sweetest, human loving dog anyone could want to meet. Nora is that resilient dog and she is hoping for a change of luck. Nora would like to finally become the beloved member of the family that she deserves to be. Nora holds no grudges, she appreciates a warm, fluffy bed, regular meals and an endless pile of dog toys. In return, Nora will teach you what it is to forgive and forget the things outside of our control and move forward in positivity. She may be about 10 years old, but she is living life like a new born puppy. Nora is so perfectly behaved in the house, loves and respects other dogs and cats and is house trained already. Nora is about 20lbs and we think she is a terrier type mix. Nora has been treated for Heartworm and now has some coughing when she gets very excited, so a calm household is best for her. Nora would love to live out her years snoring on her dog bed and just finally being part of a family. If you have ever dreamed of being that special angel who adopts a senior(ish) dog and spoils them rotten- pick Nora. She is so deserving of that kind of unconditional love. Please don’t let her cherry eye deter you, it is more cosmetic than anything else. Pick Nora for her sweetness and gratitude. Pick Nora for her loyalty and affection. Be that special angel she has been waiting for her whole life. Nora is spayed, up to date on vaccinations and preventatives and eager to find a family to loveThe adoption fee for Nora is $200 which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter.
