More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Frieda

      rescue
      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Online application here Has a dog ever come into your life and you just know there is something exceptional about them? That's the case with Miss Frieda, an approximately 7 month old Pointer/Hound mix. When you meet her, you can tell that she has a pure heart, is intelligent, and just wants to be loved. She is initially shy of strangers, but its totally understandable as humans were less than kind to her when she was just a baby. Sadly, someone brutally butchered her ears and then proceeded to dump her out of a car. While her past was unpleasant, this sweet gal adores her people; she just needs a little time to warm up and feel comfortable. Once she warms up, she is a total love bug, incredibly affectionate, adores her person and loves snuggling. She is a bit nervous around younger children, but she is great with kids age 8 and up once she gets to know them. Frieda loves to romp and play with her canine foster siblings and gains confidence being around them. For this reason, a confident resident dog in her forever home is a must, as they will "show her the ropes" and give her confidence in new situations. She loves to run and romp, thus a fenced yard is a must for this sweet gal. Not only is Frieda sweet, she is also smart! She is house trained and great on leash as she just wants to stay by her human. Because she is young, she is not a good match for someone gone an entire work day. Frieda is truly is a beautiful girl, who has overcome so much and deserves the love and security of a family. Frieda is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find her forever home. The adoption fee for this dog is $295, which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. ***Please note that our first step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. Vetting of current and past pets is very important to us, thus we will be speaking with the vet(s) listed on your application to ensure that your current and previous pet(s) are kept up to date on vaccines (including rabies ) , spayed or neutered, maintained on appropriate monthly preventatives and examined annually by your vet.*** To complete an online application, please click here and email France at FBognon@petconnectrescue.org. Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Online application here Foster Update: Carson loves to be held and snuggled. He has to be the sweetest dog I've ever met!!! He's house trained, has really good Manners and loves to SNUGGLE. He sleeps through the night on his dog bed and enjoys playing outside. He truly is just the sweetest boy! Meet Carson, an adorable, approximately 4 month old Basset/Terrier who currently weighs 18 pounds (as of 1/3). While breed is a best guess, his mix definitely includes a "low-riding breed!" Carson has your typical puppy energy, playfulness and curiosity. He is good with other dogs, all people and young enough to learn about cats. Because he is a baby, he'll require an adopter who is home a good part of the day to continue his training - no exceptions! He is up-to-date on age appropriate vaccines and preventatives and will need to be neutered at the age of 6 months. Please note, this pup's immune system will not be fully functioning until about 16 weeks of age and therefore, s/he is not suited for Apartment/Condo living or Town-homes without a private fenced yard and will not be able to go to public places where s/he could possibly be exposed to the germs of unvaccinated dogs, such as PetSmart/PetCo and dog parks until s/he is 16 weeks old. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which helps with the cost of routine vet care. This fee DOES NOT INCLUDE spay/neuter if the pup is not already spayed/neutered. If the animal you are adopting is not already spayed/neutered, you will be required to sign a contract legally obligating you to have the animal altered. ***Note that puppy adoption fees most often help generate revenue that goes towards older, special needs animals that need our help. Surgeries, heartworm treatment, boarding costs....all things that often result in adoptable dogs and cats being left behind to be euthanized. So adopting a puppy saves not just one life, but many! ***Please note that our first step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. He is an energetic, fun-loving boy who is elated to be out of the shelter. He is great with other dogs and loves all people. Because he is playful, he is not a good fit for a home with an older dog, as his love for play would likely annoy an older dog. He is not fostered with young children therefore we feel he would be best suited for homes with kids age 8 and up. Wally did well during his cat test. Due to his playful nature, Wally is not a good match for someone gone an entire workday. Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Online application here Meet FRASIER! Frasier is a gorgeous 1-2 year old, 18 pound, white with gray Shih Tzu mix. Poor Frasier was abandoned in a crate outside a vet's office in rural NC shelter; he was dirty and suffering from fleas, and allergies (possibly a food allergy), which had left his fur patchy/skin irritated. We can not understand how his people could abandon this adorable, sweet dog. After hearing from the shelter about him, Petconnect (with a great foster) has come to his rescue and brought him to the DC area to find his forever home. Frasier is friendly, outgoing, and a bit spunky! He loves to go for walks, is a great size at around 18 pounds and has the classic terrier coat! He loves to cuddle, get pets and be pampered as he deserves to be. Poor Frasier has suffered with his allergies (which do not seem to affect his sweet/playful personality) for a while and will need an adopter who is willing to put the time/effort into helping this boy move on. He already is the perfect pup on the inside and with good food, love and proper care, Frasier will once again have a beautiful fluffy coat and be the perfect pup on the outside too! As a young dog, he is playful and will need some training. Frasier gets along with his doggie companions and ignores cats. Frasier would be a great companion to curl up in your lap to hang out on a cool winter evening. Frasier is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find a family to love! The adoption fee for Frasier is $295, which includes routine vetting, vaccines, and spay/neuter ***Please note that our first step is submitting an application (it does not commit you in anyway but allows us to discuss with you if you and the dogs are a good fit).
