More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Bella & Pear...

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Online application here Dear Friends of animals, We are Bella and Pearl, two big ol’ senior dogs with great big hearts and a lot of love to give. We are Labrador retrievers and maybe mixed with a little Newfoundland, too. Please read our story and after you hear all that we have been through we hope and pray you will consider adopting us. We wake up every morning and wonder if this will be the day our dreams will come true, the day someone will come forward and say they want to give us a home. We have had a hard life to be honest. Our former owners were drug addicts and they didn’t know how to take care of us. Then one day they simply were no longer there. We didn’t know what to do, so we made our beds under the porch of our ramshackle house and waited for help. We waited a long time. Thank goodness we had each other. We eventually learned that one of our owners took his own life and the other was arrested and put in jail and that explains why they never came back. Kind people in our neighborhood kept leaving food for us, and finally one day someone took us to the local shelter in Florence, South Carolina. That wasn’t easy either. We had food and water and a roof over our heads, but we were very scared. We understood that if someone didn’t adopt us soon, our journey would end there. We are both on the older side (Pearl is graying on her muzzle and Bella has some arthritis) and we were completely overlooked at the shelter. Then one day a miracle happened. A volunteer from PetConnect Rescue heard that we were two of the sweetest dogs ever, she saw how sad we were and just in time we were saved from the euthanasia room. We now are in a foster home in Maryland and you can’t imagine how grateful we are to be safe. But we still desperately need a family to call our own. We don’t ask for much- just a soft bed to sleep in, a small fenced yard where we might hang out and enjoy the afternoon breeze and most importantly someone around to love us. We have a lot of love to give in return, we promise. In spite of all the hardships we have been through, we are as gentle as gentle can be. We even know our manners and will come when called and sit if you ask us and we always listen. We would never have an accident in the house either. We cannot imagine being separated because we have been through so much together already and we are ever so devoted to each other. Yes, we are on the older side (Pearl is 13 and Bella is 11) but we are very calm and don’t ask for much - just the chance in our senior years to finally have a real home. Just so you know, Pearl loves to be brushed and to be around people as much as possible. She has so much love to give, love on her and she will love back on you even more. Bella is a little younger at 11 and even though she is heartworm positive (she is being treated with Doxycycline ) she still enjoys playing fetch and spending time outside. Bella, like Pearl just wants someone to love. We know it’s going to take a very special person or family to want to help two older girls like us. All we ask is for someone to allow us to quietly live out the rest of our years together. If that someone would just give us a little corner of their home, we will be the most grateful dogs ever. We won’t be a bother, we promise. If you would consider adopting us please, please, please contact our adoption coordinator. Her name is Lizette and she can tell you everything you want to know about us. Just send her an email at lchanock@gmail.com or call her at 301-335-9321 Thank you so much for reading our story. Love, Bella and Pearl P.S. Because we are "mature ladies," we will require a home with few steps and a fenced yard. We will also need an adopter who is home a good part of the day, as we require more frequent trips outside. ***Please note that our first step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Online application here Meet Heidi, a sweet 7 year old Chihuahua mix, who weighs 14 pounds. Heidi is a sweet gal who came all the way from Puerto Rico to find her forever home. Heidi is fine with other dogs, but truly seems happiest when she's receiving attention from her human. She loves to go on walks and gets excited when she hears her squeaky toys. While she likes the squeaky toys, we think she gets so excited due to the fact that someone is playing with her. She follows her foster mom from room to room, so she doesn't miss out on any belly rubs. Heidi excels at the art of snuggling and will happily cuddle up on your lap for as long as you let her. She is coming along great with her house training and has only had an accident while her foster mom is at work. Because of her great love of human companionship, Heidi will do best in a home where her humans are not gone an entire work day. Heidi is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find her forever home!
