More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

When she got sick and her babies were born in the shelter there was no time, but an amazing foster stepped up and we saved them! She is the perfect age between 1-2! Now momma Kona is ready to find her forever home!! Email dogs@labra dorsandfriends.org or fill out our online application at www.labradorsandfriends.org Kona is located in Southern California…PLEASE SHARE In the Beginning: What a difference 7 weeks makes! Everyone remembers Kona and her newborn babies from the Carson Shelter…we honestly weren't sure this little family was going to make it when we pulled them. The shelter didn't realize Kona was pregnant and then she whelped there. We pulled them because an AMAZING foster home came forward for them! It was a rough first few weeks but to see them now at almost 8 weeks old warms our heart! Momma Kona will be spayed and ready for her forever home soon. She is a sweet, loving, gentle girl who has touched all our hearts. She is great with other dogs, house trained and absolutely perfect. Her babies are just like their momma! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Foster or Forever Home Wanted: Meet Mac!! Mac is a very special guy...he has been with us for a while getting the love, confidence and training he so needed. Mac came from the Carson Shelter, he was petrified and had zero chance of making it out, but we saw something in him and gave him a chance. Mac isn't an easy placement, he will need an experienced owner, one who understands a dog who is afraid of new people. Once Mac knows you and bonds with you he will love you forever, he has a few volunteers he adores and they feel the same about him. Mac has been working with Sadot of Elite K9 Academy and he has made so much progress, but he will still need time, patience, understanding and the right adopter. Mac is house trained, great with puppies, female dogs and dogs smaller than him, he is very playful. We know that person is out there and they will fall in love with Mac just like we did. Please help us make Mac's holiday wish come true! Email dogs@labradorsandfriends.org or fill out our online application at www.labradorsandfriends.org Mac is located in Southern California. In the Beginning: Mac is a Carson Shelter Survivor…he was scared to death at the shelter. Once we got him out he was so much better and now he is starting to decompress and realize he is safe! Mac needs to find his forever home or even a foster who will love him and give him the attention he needs. Mac is unsure of new things, but adapts quickly. He can be a little fearful of new people, but does great when he gets to know you. He rides well in the car, appears to be house and crate trained. He is good with other dogs, but we do not know about cats. Mac is also good on a leash.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Forever Home Wanted: Meet Popeye and Olive!! This odd couple was surrendered to the dreaded San Bernardino Shelter by their owner. Olive, the black female, is deaf and Popeye, the yellow male, is blind. They are bonded siblings. Popeye and Olive are very even-tempered and gentle. They love adults, kids, other friendly dogs (their size and smaller), car rides, are gentle taking treats, do well in the house, sleep through the night and do not need to be crated. Both are very laid back and do not require significant exercise. Olive is a little “Deaf,” hearing only in close proximity. She’s good on a leash and very alert when walking in her neighborhood. Olive walks between 30 min up to hour depending on the weather. She prefers walking in cooler weather. She likes to play fetch the ball but would rather be with you in sight-seeing range. She knows basic commands, sit, lie, come, off, and wait. Popeye is “Blind” but doesn’t require any significant special care. He adapts to his surroundings quickly. He’s a routine dog and knows what time is breakfast and dinner and when he goes for a walk. Popeye walks well on leash in familiar areas and prefers short walks (30 minutes or less) in the cool evenings. As a blind dog he needs to be introduced slowly to new areas to allow him to acclimate. These two are adorable, petite, gentle and very loving. We would love to get them into a forever home. Please email dogs@labradorsandfriends.org or fill out our online application at www.labradorsandfriends.org. They are located in Southern California.
