Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Hi, I'm Phoebe! I'm about 5 or 6 years old. I was found by Animal Control, emaciated and sad, having lived my life neglected on a chain. The shelter staff were really worried I would die if I didn't get out of the shelter and get the veterinary care I needed and some TLC. That was all in the past though, and today I'm ready to move on! I love to snuggle with my foster parents, I like to take walks, and I love to play ball! But most of all, I'd really love to find a home of my own where I can be your princess! Could you be my knight-in-shining-armor?? (Or lady-in-shining-armor?!) :) Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. Each dog in our rescue is in a loving foster home, where they can grow, play, and recover from their time spent on the streets or in a shelter. If you'd like to meet an adoptable dog, please fill out an application on our website, www.edcr.org. Because we are a foster home based rescue a completed adoption application is required to meet our adoptable dogs.

More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We were concerned that she would be paralyzed but with surgery and TLC from her foster dad Marin has made a great recovery. She now walks well, but she does have some permanent issues with fecal incontinence; this is manageable but will take a patient and understanding family. She was surrendered after developing diabetes, which is easily treatable with insulin injections twice daily. (She doesn't mind it one bit!) Her diabetes has also caused her to go blind, but she learns new environments very quickly and still loves to explore her world! She is such a lovely girl. She will make a great addition to a lucky family who sees that she's worth a little extra effort. Shyla weighs 30 lb, but probably should weigh 35 lb - she's still a bit underweight. She is approx 8 years old now and has developed hypothyroidism, but this condition is easily managed with an inexpensive medication. Angie is confused about why she lost her home and family, so we're hoping to find her a new foster or adoptive family quickly. Angie will go for walks if you like, but she's just as happy to relax on the couch. She gets along with other dogs who share her mellow demeanor. She is housetrained and knows basic commands. I had been a stray for awhile and then someone decided to use me as a bait dog. I was covered in cuts and punctures and the tips of my ears are still gone. I was a sad sight. Then my foster mom saw me and fell in love. She scooped me up right away and got me to a vet and cleaned me up. Now I'm a healthy, energetic and very loving boy who wants a forever home! I get along with most female dogs, I don't like kitties and should be in a home with older kids (only because I am so wiggly). I love to run around and play and jump on the furniture. And when I really get going I even smile at you! Take me home and I'll show you my gorgeous smile!
