Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. My perfect family: One with strength and experience with dogs who need strong leaders. I can live with some dogs but not all of them. I would love a home by myself if possible. However with the right experienced owner who knows the intricacies of my breed I can be fine with other dogs. I like to be the protector of the other dog at home and do not like them barking at each other. How did I get to NDLB: I was at a local impound facility and my foster parents came and broke me out! Hobbies: Barking at things and whomever! I do like a rope toy from time to time. My favorite thing is to lay in the sun and chill! Commands/Tricks: Sit and laydown are all that I really need. I am a pretty mello and chill kinda guy. I sleep in the room of my 11 year old human and have never had an accident in the home no matter how long I am left out! Crate/Potty Trained: NO In fact I break out of them and will only do well with free reign of the home. Activity Level: Medium. Likes to hang out with people and relax mostly. Fun things I do: Laying on the lap of whomever will let me. I love going on walks and laying in the grass in the sun. Socialization/who I currently live with: Piper (6 year old Pit Bull), Scout(Elvis) the 14# 1 year old trouble maker. Shianne (my human sister), Savanah (my human baby sitter), Jill (my Mom), and Matthew (my Dad) Wall-e's adoption fee includes: Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination, bordetella vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, neuter, flea and tick preventive (while in rescue), heartworm preventive (while in rescue), pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam. Adoption fee: $145.00

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Fox Terrier / Mixed. My name is Rocky!! I am about 3 years old. I love people, dogs, I love kids but I get over stimulated, so I would do best with a home with much older kids or no kids. I am a playful pup and enjoy playing with toys and catch me. My foster mom loves how happy I am all the time, when she comes home I come to her with a smile and wag my tail. I was born in a shelter in the south and lives my whole life there until my foster mom brought me up here. I like the sound of that. I love my kennel and do so well in there. I am almost 100% house broken but for the life of me I have not figured out how to ask to go out; so my foster mom lets me out about every 2 hours, but in my kennel I never make a mess. I am still have a bit pup in me so sometimes I still chew on things I am not suppose to, but my foster mom is on me and I am learning. I love walks and I walk so well on a leash. I do better in a home with other dogs that I can follow their lead. I am very trainable and learning fairly quickly; I have even learned down. All my foster bother both 4 legged and 2 I love. My foster mom says since I have been living with her for a while it will take me awhile to get us to a new home. My foster mom says I am very sweet and gentle and she scratches my ears and boy do I love that. I hope I find my forever home soon !!! Rocky’s adoption fee includes: Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination, bordetella vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, neuter, flea and tick preventive, heartworm preventive, pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam. Lola

      rescue
      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Meet Iola, also known as Lola! Lola came into rescue with her puppies as a stray. Lola is very scared and unsure of what is going on. She will need a very understanding and patient family. Lola is very sweet but very scared of people. She seems to warm up to women more then men, but it takes a few months for her to show signs of being comfortable. Lola strives best with another dog in the house. She would do best with a home with another dog, which helps her come out of her shell and helps build her confidence. Lola loves other dogs and it will help her learn to trust humans better by learning from the other dog in the home. When Lola is scared she reacts by running and hiding and trying to burry herself in a corner. She is scared to be touched and doesn't like to be held. Lola is working on potty training and is doing very good! It takes some coaxing to get her outside, but once she is, she will go potty. She has done very well with going to the bathroom outside and hasn't had an accident in her foster home in quite awhile. This is huge progress for her. Lola likes to spend her time lounging on the couch on her own. She isn't much of a cuddler but will curl up by your legs if you're laying on the couch next to her. Animals seem to make her more confident and she really enjoys the company of other animals. Lola would not do well in a home with a lot of activity and loud noises. Lola would thrive best in a home with no children and with not a lot of guests in and out of the home. Lola is very sweet and quiet. She needs a home that is willing to help build her confidence which she is extremely lacking in. The ideal home for Lola would be a quiet home with low activity and understanding that she is fearful but she's a totally different dog if she has another dog to live with. In her foster home she has shown much improvement over the last few months, but still struggles with people moving around the house because she feels unsure of what is going on. When Lola is frightened she has never shown any aggression, she has the flight response and wants to run as far away as possible and almost wants to be invisible. Lola will have accidents in her kennel if left in there too long, but does great free roaming at her foster home with very little accidents happening. Lola is a tougher case and really needs someone who wants to work with her and understands that she is fearful of people. Despite Lola's quirks, she is the sweetest and I can't emphasize enough how well she does with animal companions. Lola's adoption fee includes: Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination, bordetella vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, spay, flea and tick preventive (seasonal), heartworm preventive (while in rescue), pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam. Adoption fee:$285.00

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). My name is Lucas and I'm proof that even after being abused, dogs can still love people. I'm not sure when I was born, but I'd guess it was about a year ago. I'm house trained and can spend time in my crate without making noise, but I'd rather curl up beside you on the couch. I love everybody I meet. I get along with other dogs, but haven't been around any cats. I leave the resident dog alone, but the dog next door comes over and we romp around like crazy kids. I know how to walk nice on a leash, but get a little scared when those big trucks drive by me. I know how to take treats nicely, without scaring anyone who will give me one. The treat I really want is a FUR-ever home where I'll be loved! I love kids as they are the best to snuggle with. If you leave me home alone not in my kennel I like to get into mischief like moving your shoes and slippers. My only flaw is when I am out walking I want to meet every dog on a walk and will pull like crazy to go meet them. My foster dad is good about correcting me but I still need some training on this. I have not met a person or dog I have not liked. Lucas's adoption fee includes: rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination, Bordetella vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, neuter, flea and tick preventive,(seasonal) heartworm preventive (seasonal) pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). My name is Mimi and I am a beautiful ChiWeenie. I am over the age of two and am fully house trained. I need a quiet house with not a lot of coming and going because I am nervous and afraid around strangers and bark - not just a little. I will scare people off! However, once I get used to people, I am a huge cuddler. It does take a few visits for me to be attached though. The fastest way to gain my friendship is giving me awesome treats - that has been proven to work! I love snuggling under a blanket, so if you can't find me, it's likely that I'm rolled up in blanket. I am crate trained and sometimes do sleep in a crate. I sleep with my foster parent when she is home though, and that is my favorite! I love to play with other dogs or humans! I love to chew on bones and play with toys. My most favorite though is to cuddle with my humans, especially when they are reading or watching TV! I came to my foster home with babies in my belly and I had five little puppies. Now that they've all found their forever homes, I am ready for my forever home! Please remember I need someone with patience because I am afraid of strangers and will bark at you at first. But once I have gotten to know you, I will be forever devoted to you! Mimi's adoption fee includes: rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, spay, flea and tick preventive, heartworm preventive, pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam.
