Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Evie, once a loving mama of 8 sweet pups, has matured into a gentle 4-year-old lady in love with life and in love with loving. Quite simply, she is worth her weight (50 pounds) in love. Her two favorite pastimes are generously doling out kisses and cuddling up close to her people as often as paws-ible. She never tires of either of these. Evie moves about slowly and humbly but her tail whips constantly from side to side almost doing 360 degrees before reversing again. She also has the most amazing smile or "submissive grin." For those who have never experienced this phenomenon, it's incredibly adorable. Evie smiles when her people come home. She smiles when she gets some loving and she smiles when she gets excited. Yet as sweet and smiley as she is, she is very nervous in new situations, during storms, and while traveling. Evie is not destructive or volatile, she just pants and drools until the experience ends and needs a patient family who can help her overcome or ride out these fears. Now in search of her forever home, Evie requires one with a privacy fence that is 5 feet or higher. Evie is a world class jumper but if Evie can’t see anything tempting to chase, she doesn't jump. But just imagine having this sweetheart jump up on your lap or your sofa for some snuggling and that’s another story altogether. Evie is fostered in Birmingham, AL but is willing to travel to nearby cities for her happily ever after. For more information about this special Mama Bear please contact info@forrescue.net and ask about adopting Evie and having her love you forever.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Huntsville, AL
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). ~~If you are looking for a sweet senior companion, Dixon may be your man! Dixon was turned in to the shelter with several other dogs because their owner could longer care for them, but he adjusted quickly in his loving foster home. Dix is a long-legged Chihuahua-terrier mix, weighs under ten pounds, and has been estimated to be 11 or 12 years old. But don’t let his age fool you….Dixon is a boy of many moods:at times he is quite active and playful and at other times he is the ultimate lap dog. Dixon enjoys riding in the car, taking walks around the neighborhood, and napping in the sun. He gets along well with the other small dogs in his foster home and he enjoys meeting people who come to visit. But when he encounters unfamiliar dogs or people when he’s on a walk or out in public, he gets very excited and barks a lot! Dixon loves spending his evenings on his foster mom’s lap and he wants to sleep under the covers in someone’s bed each night. Dixon has an old injury on one of his legs that doesn't bother him a single bit. He also just had his teeth professionally cleaned by the vet and he is so happy about that!! Dixon is a precious boy who is in good health and still has much love to give. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed, tested negative for heart worms, and is current on trifexis. He is fostered in Huntsville, AL but is available for adoption in your area. To fill out an application, go to http://forrescue.net/dog-application.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed. ~~Meet Jack the beautiful white Jack Russell terrier with tan spots and brown ears. He is a 6-8 year old, weighing in at approximately 20 lbs, 16” tall and 22” long (not including short tail). Jack is a sweet boy who loves to be around people as a true companion dog. He is very loving, a sweet disposition, gets along well with cats and other dogs. He enjoys treats and bones but is not big on stuffed toys. Outside he loves to fetch, and will play for around 30 minutes or so before he is ready to nap in the sun. He can sit, stay and shake, so his previous owners must have trained him. Although not knowing his real name he quickly learned that Jack is his new name. Jack is very smart and a quick learner, knowing that his basket is the place to be when relaxing and enjoying the lazy time of the day. He is house trained, crate trained and walks well on a leash. He is neutered, microchipped, is currently taking Trifexis, up to date on his vaccinations and is heart worm negative. He recently had a cyst removed from his knee, but there are no complications and is in good health. She loves to play with other dogs or with her person and then loves to curl up on the couch with someone to take a naps and give kisses. She settles quickly. He is sweet and loving and wants to be the center of attention. He is happiest curled up on a blanket next to the person he has claimed. He was a rambling man before coming to us and because of his life on the streets had a horrible skin infection that caused hair loss. His tail is still trying to grow hair, and we honestly dont know if it will ever grow back or if he will require more treatment down the road. For now he is healthy and a little hair loss just adds to his personality and doesnt hinder his good looks. Are you willing to give this sweet boy a chance. Location: Huntsville, AL
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). ~~Meet Bruno! Much like his name, he is BIG and Strong! But he also has a soft side and a past.. that he isnt telling us about. Bruno spent most of his life on a chain and neglected. He now craves attention. He gets so excited when he sees his favorite person that he hops about 3 feet off the ground. For this reason, he needs a TALL fence (about 6 ft). He is good with female dogs, and not great with cats. He LOVES his favorite chair, despite it being well used before he ever got it. He thinks he is the king of the world snuggled in at night in that chair. He is an awesome judge of character with a big personality. He has an intense fear of a hose pipe and does not like to be sprayed with water. He has been fostered in a kennel environment and will need some work with house training. But he is a smart boy and will learn quick. He may already have it mastered as he tries to hold it. Bruno would do best with a kind experienced owner. He is neutered, heartworm negative and up to date on vaccines. For more info email s_keegans@yahoo.com

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Huntsville, AL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Lily has had a rough go of events. She was at the shelter with severe lick wounds on her front and back paws. After several rounds of medicine and physical therapy, xrays were done, and her front foot was too damaged for repair, and she ended up losing her front leg. Luckily, the back leg is healing nicely. Lily has not let that affect her personality or spirit. She loves to go on walks, playing tug-a-war, and cuddling on the couch. She is truly an inspiration to anyone that has to overcome challenges. She must be an only dog. Lily does get along great with her human family, ignores cats, is crated trained, and house broken. She is truly a great girl, with a low to medium energy level, and a beautiful smile!!

      BB

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Huntsville, AL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ~~BB is a big handsome boy who weighs 80 lbs and he is a year and a half old. He has a very special rescue story behind him, and he is is an amazing dog who has made such progress in the 3 short months we have had him. He was born on a farm area in the fall of 2015 with 70 of other dogs on the property, and little human contact. He never had much socialization with humans, never allowed indoors, but he was the happiest and most playful out of the whole group of dogs when we went to help see if there were any there that we could rescue. He was rescued and brought to our home January of 2017 and wasn’t sure how to react to all the new things that come along with being in a home. Everything was new to him. Being allowed in the house, all of the sounds in a typical home, being walked on a leash, etc… It has been an absolute joy to watch him discover new things and learn how to be a pet. He loves to play and he will really thrive in a home with other dogs. He takes direction from them, and they make him feel comfortable in new situations. He is very friendly with other dogs and loves to play tug and chew on rope toys He still enjoys being outside but will need a home with a privacy fence since he is a big boy and could jump some fences and could be easily spooked by new things the can’t always be anticipated. He also plays great at the dog park. He loves his food and gets very excited at meal time. He doesn’t get on the furniture and prefers to sleep at the end of the bed or at your feet. BB will be the most loyal dog you have ever owned- once he trusts you he feels protective of you and your space which can lead to some barking but no aggressiveness. In general, BB does like to bark to let you know when something new happens in his world or someone new comes over but he is never aggressive. He gets alot of confidence from other dogs and does like to follow and submit to a pack. He loves the dog park and plays well with everyone. He would love nothing more than a home with a doggy playmate, a rope, and human to give him belly rubs. He needs an indoor-only home. BB would do best in a home without small dogs, puppies, or small children, because he is fearful of them. He can be easily startled and will bark to let you know so but warms up with some treats and time, He will need a special family who will allow him to adapt at his pace. He is so special to us and he is such a delightful big boy! Fill out an application for sweet BB here and we will be in touch asap. http://forrescue.net/dog-application/. He is neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, tested negative for heartworms, dewormed, and current on Trifexis. BB is eager to find his very own family.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ~~Owen is a big puppy! At 81 pounds and almost two years old, he is fully grown but still acts similar to a small puppy in his playfulness. This big boy is so handsome!! He loves to play, but he also loves to chill and watch tv with his humans. He loves to be chased, play with his ropes, and eat. He is a big fan of belly rubs, the dog park, and walks. He isn't phased by thunderstorms or most loud noises and doesn't get on the furniture. He is handsome and oh so loyal to his house and his humans. He would love another playful dog about his size in his forever home or just frequent trips to play at the dog park. He is house broken and we are working on crate training and other manners. When we do leave him home alone though we are able to leave him out without him getting into anything. Owen would do best in a home without small children, because he is fearful of them, and fearful of loud noises in the house. Owen will need a home who can provide TLC and have patience with him. He is learning that people are good and that he doesn't have to be scared of them. Fill out an application for sweet Owen here and we will be in touch asap. http://forrescue.net/dog-application/.
