Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Lets start an adventure together! We are still getting to know Vine, but she is a very friendly girl and is good around the kids, cats and dogs. She walks well on a leash and likes to go on walks, and rides well in the car. She has a beautiful brindle coat and weighs about 31lbs. She was an outside dog and is working on her potty training and indoor manners. Vine is heart worm positive and is currently going through treatment. Once that is complete, she will be ready for a loving forever home. I was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved me and now they are helping me find the forever, loving home that I have never known. I am currently located at San Antonio Pets Alive!, and I am in a foster home. By adopting me, you not only give me a new leash on life; you also save the life of the additional dog who can be rescued from euthanasia and placed in foster care. If you are interested adopting, please email adopt@sanantoniopetsalive.org with Pet name and ID#. Please allow us up to 24 hours to respond as all fosters work with us on a volunteer basis. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

You can almost pick her up and carry her around, she's so petite! Cammy loves to give kisses!! She loves people and children of all ages. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Hi my name is Reed. I have LDS (little dog syndrome). I'm a cute snuggley love at my foster home but when I go out to events I become Mr. Bossy Boots because all the big dogs need to know I'm the boss! I'd be ok with other submissive small dogs and older kids but please no larger dogs or small kids. It's exhausting having to boss everyone around! I like to sit on my foster mommy's lap, play in the yard, play with squeak toys, chew rawhides and adore belly rubs! I bark at squirrels and the mailman, otherwise my foster mommy says I'm pretty quiet for a little dog. I came from a cruelty situation and need someone who will help me learn that not all humans are bad! I was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved me and now they are helping me find the forever, loving home that I have never known. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I need a patient, loving individual! Hello! My name is Dottie. I'm about 2 1/2 years old. My first 2 years of life was really rough. I was considered a cruelty case animal. My first owners were not very nice to me :-( But me and my brother Diego (A274918) were rescued!!! We were in pretty bad shape...we didn't trust anyone. No one wanted to help us trust again until my current foster mom accepted us the way we were and had patience with us. After about 2 months, I was doing much better and my foster mom put me up for adoption. I was adopted to what we thought was a nice adoptive mom, But after about 3 months being with my new mom left her apartment leaving me in the woods. I was REALLY scared...I still had some trust issues and I had never been left outside before. With my trust issues no one could catch me. Even my foster mom could not catch me...she was so sad. She even offered lots of money if someone could catch me but no one could. I was left outside fending for myself for about 2 months!!! But then one day I was VERY lucky...I was hit by a car...though it stunned me...I was ok and Animal Control was able to catch me. Luckily my foster mom wanted me back and when I went back to Animal Control my foster mom had ensured they had her cell number so they would call her and I wouldn't get euthanized. Within an hour of getting the call, my foster mom was getting me....yeah!!!!! I was back with my brother Diego...that helped me calm down with everything that happened. So it's been about 5 months of hanging out with my foster mom, Diego and the rescue pack. I'm doing really well. I'm a happy dog....I'm a good girl and ready to live my life. Though I do ok with small children...I would flourish in a household with older kids...10 years or older. Just a family that respects my space and willing to let me learn on my time. I do give kisses now, so I'm learning :-) I'm about 10lbs...stocky/low rider. I'm potty/crate trained. My foster mom tells me all the time what a great pup I am. I have lots a good years left and I'm told every day how very smart I am. Thank you for looking at my profile. Sincerely, Little Dottie I was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved me and now they are helping me find the forever, loving home that I have never known. She gives the best hugs putting her paws around your waist and pressing her face against your tummy and she also loves to dance (the Tango is her favorite!). Abby is in a foster home with dogs of all sizes, cats, and kids and is good with all of them although she can get a little rambunctious. She needs a home with a back yard to run and play in because she's still really scared of leashes. She is potty/crate trained. Posted Breed: Retriever (short coat). Milkdud is a 7 month old terrier mix. She's spayed and chipped. She's up to date on shots and preventatives. She weighs about 25 pounds and probably won't get much bigger. Milkdud was very dependent on her brothers that were adopted before her. Now she's pretty shy and timid around new people and situations. Once she warms up she's a very friendly, affectionate and playful puppy. She loves her toys, the water and playing with the other dogs in the house. She's crate and paper trained. She's working on her housebreaking. She will sometimes run into a corner or under a table/bed if she's scared. She will fear snap if you try to touch/pick her up when she's cornered herself. You have to let Milkdud come to you. She's easily redirected with treats. She's learning basic commands like sit and down. She loves to sleep with her doggy siblings or snuggled with her person. She likes playing in her pool. She's pretty good on a lead. She hasn't been around cats or small children. She should go to a home with older kids that won't try to pick her up when she's scared.

I love to play with my foster family (dogs & cats) here. I love fun times! I'm a people kind of guy, and so many of them fall in love with me right away. I'm pretty darn good on a leash, and am perfecting my house-potty training thing. I'm still young, so I still need to do some learning, but this Love stuff, I got that down really good! 100% Love Bug I was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved me and now they are helping me find the forever, loving home that I have never known. I play, kiss and even snuggling now. :-) I'm 15lbs and a lot of fun! I LOVE my human toddler foster sister. I'm enjoying sitting on couch and doing things I did not have before I saved. Thank you for considering my profile. Call my foster mom....she will tell you some really cool things about me!
