Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Carson is a fun loving boy full of energy. He could play ball all day. Whether you throw the ball in the air or across the yard...he's got it. He loves toys too and loves to play "catch me if you can" with his canine companions. Carson is a rambunctious boy and would do best in an active household. He will require some training to be the perfect dog but he is very eager to please. We are working with him on the leash but at this point he is very much a puller. Carson does well with some dogs although he is selective of his canine companions. He is a little too rambunctious for small children but should be fine with old children (12 and up). If you have the time and energy to train this great dog, he will make a wonderful addition to any family. If you would like more information about Carson or to set up an appointment to meet him, please email comments@satchelslastresort.org or call 941-924-5070.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Sarasota, FL
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Toby has grown up here at Satchel’s. He came to us with horrible Demodex mange. His skin was so inflamed and he had several bald patches. Well…this boy has come a long way. He is mange free and has quite a beautiful coat. The only thing we need to add this this boys success story is a forever home. He is fantastic dog with lots of love to give. He is good with other dogs and would make a terrific companion. He still has lots of energy and while he does know some basic commands, he will need some additional training to be the perfect dog. Please call or email us if you would like more information about Toby.

Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Shy guy Houdini is such a gentle boy. He is still in the process of coming out of his shell but, once he knows you, he is your friend for life. You may have to spend time with Houdini many times before he'll warm up to you. He loves to be cuddled by the people he is comfortable with. He is quite a kissy boy when you are finally accepted in his inner circle of friends. He loves to play with his kennel mates. His favorite game being "tag...your're it". He also loves toys. Houdini can be a little selective of his canine companions as he is always a bit nervous of new things and situations. Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Beagle Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sarasota, FL
Posted Breed: Beagle / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Ava is a little cutie pie. She weights approximately 35 pounds. She loves to play with toys and her canine companions. She has never met a person she doesn't like. She's a lover and will give kisses galore. She loves to play with other dogs but can be a bit bossy if they are in "her space" and so would prefer to be the only dog in the home. Ava does have thunderstorm anxiety and begins to get nervous at the first sign of a storm. She does not like to be outside and can become an escape artist if left alone in a yard when she can sense a storm. She also does not like loud noises of any kind. For more information about Ava and/or to set up an appointment to meet her, please email comments@satchelslastresort.org or call 941-924-5070.

      Lizzie

      rescue
      Breed: Black Mouth Cur-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sarasota, FL
Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). Lizzie is one of those dogs that may have not had an easy start but still has an incredible outlook on life. She came to be a part of Satchels after she and her litter of 8 pups came into animal services. Animal Services needed help so they called us. All of Lizzie's puppies have been adopted and Lizzie awaits her turn. Lizzie does have thunderstorm phobia and was probably an outdoor girl before she came to us. She was in a foster home for awhile and lived with two other dogs and small children. She was excellent there. However, at the shelter she is very selective of her canine companions. She loves any attention from people and is truly wonderful with children. She enjoys walks and here favorite thing is car rides. She is very affectionate and loving. However, Lizzie does not like most other animals. She would do best in a home with a savvy dog owner with no other animals. She can be an escape artist if there is something on the other side of the fence that she is interested in. If you would like to find out more about Lizzie, please call us or send an email to: comments@satchelslastresort.com
