If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Natasha is being fostered in Houston, TX. She is available for out-of-state adoptions. Please see below for details. Oh, Hello! I'm Natasha, and I'm here about the dog job. I am quite highly qualified, as you will see by my resume. My Qualifications: * Lots of experience at being a very sweet pup. * Professional-level Cookie-Taster (but not really all that picky!). * Sweetest smile ever. * Total Smarty-Pants. * World-Class Cuddle-Bug. * Excellent Face Kisser (if I don't say so myself). * Great with other dogs. * Devoted Taker of Naps. I'd just love to be part of a real family. As you can see, I'm a total sweet-heart, and I'm also quite adorable. Choose me, and I will be a constant source of smiles for you. I will happily greet you at the door, and make it my mission to ensure you are always well-snuggled. Contact info@redcollar.org so we can meet! Age: 2 yrs Weight: 45 lbs Dogs? ok Cats? unknown Kids? ok Needs Foster? yes Many of our adoptions are to out-of-area adopters. The process is, for the most part, the same as it is for in-town adoptions. The adoption fee to out-of-state destinations in the U.S. is $550, which includes air transport, traveling crate, and health certificate. The adoption fee for Canadian destinations is $600 (Canadian). (Please note that there is an additional estimated $80 pick up charge in Canada). RCR takes care of all of the flight arrangements. Because of the distance, it is not possible for you to meet the dog, in person, unless you come to Houston. We can often send videos and/or do FaceTime interviews to allow you to “meet” the dog. Why should you consider adopting a dog from Houston? Houston is the #2 kill city in the U.S. City and County shelters often take in a combined 200-300 animals per day. The number of homeless pets and resulting euthanasias are staggering -- the average "live release rate" from Houston area shelters is only about 35-50%. Houston is estimated to have over 1 million homeless animals. Over 100,000 are killed in Harris Co shelters every year. Red Collar Rescue volunteers work tirelessly to save as many as we can, but the Houston area is saturated with so many pets in need of a home and not enough adopters. To put it simply, we encourage out of state adoptions because it helps us save more lives. We hope that you will consider one of our many adoptable pets who are waiting for a second chance at a forever home - wherever it may be!

The name’s Bond… Just like my 007 namesake, I am an intelligent, handsome gentleman who is sure to make you swoon you with my quiet but calm manner. My short soft fur has dashing markings of grey and brown, and my soulful eyes will melt your heart. I have a taste for some of the finer things, like having a house and a yard to call my own and being around other distinguished canines such as myself. I don’t take myself too seriously though - playing with toys and being silly are also very important to me! I am devoted to my human and will follow you anywhere, being sure to show you love and affection. I will even lay my head in your lap. Although I appear shy at first, I quickly warm up to everyone. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Vizsla / Mixed. Hi everybody, my name is Bodhi. I'm a calm, sweet little guy looking for a home with space to romp and play, and also where there are plenty of belly rubs. I really love belly rubs! I'm about 3 yrs. old, and I know my basic commands. I'm good with other dogs as long as they are pretty calm. I really like getting outside where I can stretch my long legs with a good run, and maybe chase some tennis balls! I'm crazy about tennis balls! Oh, and socks too! I love going to daycare and playing with other dogs. I'm a lot of fun, maybe a little on the shy side at first. I had a foster home for a few months and I loved my foster mom and dad and are very loyal to them but I'm a little afraid of strangers, especially children, until I know they are ok and want to be friends! I am now back living at a kennel. I would do best with a family who has dogs cuz I love having K9 buddies to learn from! If you meet me, you might just fall in love. Why don't we give that a try? She is available for out of state adoption.** ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi, my name is Chloe! My owner got sick and could no longer take care of me. The nice doctor at the clinic was kind enough to let me stay here until I find a new home. At first, I was not so good with other dogs but now they let me go to daycare very day with other dogs and I realized they're not that bad. As a matter of fact, it's alot of fun to run and play all day! I am very sweet and love pets and cuddle time. I am loyal and will love you forever if you choose me to be your new companion. I would prefer a home with another dog, and I especially love boy dogs! Wanna meet me? Email savapetwac@yahoo.com I LOVE other dogs, belly rubs, cuddling with my humans, going for walks, sun bathing, eating, giving kisses, going for car rides, being included in all family activities I HAVE A loving and gentle disposition, a tail that wags incessantly and kisses waiting for you all the time. I also have one eye that doesn’t work and that requires eye drops daily, and since my mouth/jaw was injured prior to being rescued, I do have a minor snoring problem. I have excellent hearing and a strong bark and will alert my family when I hear unfamiliar noises or sense that something just isn’t right. I GET ALONG WITH all people and dogs that I have met so far (and I’ve met many). I am comfortable setting appropriate boundaries with overly-zealous dogs. I WOULD RATHER NOT share meal/eating locations with other dogs as I am a rapid eater and have a ferocious appetite. I can get a little bossy when it comes to food. I would definitely prefer not to be in a shelter again as I am the perfect (easy) house pet. My foster mom has had to kennel me a few times while traveling and although I prefer to be in a home 24/7, I am quite flexible. I NEED to be in a home where I can be affectionate. I love attention but am very satisfied just lying next to your feet while you work or watch TV. Although I have learned some basic commands, I could use some additional obedience training. I AM an easy to please, and eager to please affectionate and happy middle aged girl who loves my humans and responds well to correction. My early years were challenging, however, I am beyond thankful to all who rescued me and provided me with love. I am looking forward to “paying it forward” from here on. A PERFECT DAY FOR ME INCLUDES a couple of short walks and/or car rides, a few belly rubs, snuggling with my human(s), a nutritious meal or two each day, and laying on a soft rug, dog bed, or soft human furniture (if allowed) next to my humans while they work or relax. I PREFER NOT TO have to ruff-house with other dogs though I am good at escaping to my own quiet place) IF YOUR FAMILY is looking for an easy, trustworthy, calm and affectionate family member who aim to please, then ask for Chloe! I'm a very interesting mix of basset hound and something else...a mix of adorable, cute and unique! I am an extremely loyal and devoted gal. I was living in a very bad situation with my daughter, Sammy, when suddenly a very nice man swept us up and said he would take care of us until we could find a family of our very own! Sammy and I love to play and cuddle - we are best friends and sure would like to find a home with enough love for both of us! I'm a very good mother and I make sure that she doesn't get into things that might hurt her. I'm very smart, inquisitive, and energetic. I love going for walks...long or short, any walk will do. I've been working with a trainer and now I know all of my manners - I walk well on the leash and when Sammy and I go for our walk, we are the talk of the town - we are truly one-of-a-kind! Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Mixed. Hey there! My name is Sammy and I am an energetic, playful and affectionate girl. I am also very decisive....I like interior decorating with my toys and I know exactly where I want them to be. My foster dad will gather up all of my toys in the evening and when he wakes up in the morning, I've put them all back in their proper place! I think he moves my things on purpose, just to see if I notice! I love to be around people and I am very affectionate. I'll spend time doting on you, in between loving to go on walks, and chewing on my treats. I have spent my entire life with my mom, Molly, and we are best friends! We sure do hope to find a home w/ enough love for both of us! When we go for walks, I'm OK with the other dogs, so I'd probably get along in a multi-dog household. However, animals smaller than dogs, such as squirrels and cats usually realize it is a good idea to run away from me and I like to chase them! I am housetrained and cratetrained and love to cuddle in bed. I've been working w/ a trainer and walk well on leash and know all of my commands - and when we go for our walk, me and Molly are the talk of the neighborhood - we're VERY popular - all the neighborhood kids run up to greet us! I'm one-of-a-kind and love to be petted and loved on. I'm very adorable and would love to find a forever home! If you would like to meet me, please contact info@redcollar.org.
