Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd (medium coat). Echo is a super high energy girl that would love to have a family of her own! She is a special needs dog as she was born deaf due to the 'fabulous' breeding practices to obtain her pretty coloring. But don't let that stop you from looking at this girl, she doesn't know she's deaf! We are working on her with hand signals and she does amazing with other dogs, she lives with a houseful and goes to doggie day camp on a regular basis. She would do best in an adult only home with a minimun of a 5' securely fenced yard and would love another 4 legged companion that can keep up with her. Given her special needs, we will need to keep her adoption local so that her foster mom can be involved in her transition to her new forever home.

More About Australian Shepherd Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Delilah

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Hi! I'm Delilah! Are you my 'pawfect match'? I've been with my foster family since December - they love me very much but I really need my own family...I'm probably a lab mix and I'm a good medium size dog -- I've been through a lot in my short little life but I'm doing great! Even though the vet & foster mom says I have some delays, I don't let it stop me. I run and play at my foster mommy's house and love exploring the back yard. My best friend is a big puppy who lets me run into him, knock him down and chew on his head...some of the other puppies in my foster home get on my nerves a bit - they are just too hyper and in my face. If you have another dog, we'd just have to see how we get along. Maybe a home with a more mellow adult dog, one that will play with me but won't knock me down and pin me down would be ok. My back legs are sometimes a bit off balance (see background below) but doesn't prohibit me from walking or running! I also grunt a lot - foster mommy says maybe I'm part PIG! I love treats and food and any toy my foster mommy gives me - I like to put the toy in my mouth and run around the house and yard with it. I am doing VERY well with my house training - foster mom says I'm better than my dog pal who is over a year old! I have a spot I like to use out in the back yard and try very hard to do so consistently - obviously I will need a consistent schedule to get great at this at your house! Foster mom wants a home for me with a fenced yard - she says I dance to the beat of my own drum (whatever that means as I don't think we have any drums) and need to explore and not be confined to a leash...My pawfect match is out there - my foster mommy says so - is it you? Background: Delilah & her littermates came to us from a rural county shelter. Delilah had an obvious issue with her head as it seemed misshapened - she was taken to the vet where x-rays & ultrasound were completed - it appeared she had a fluid pocket & a small skull fracture - the cause is unknown - the fluid was drained & her head returned to normal shape. There was initial concern that Delilah might have impairments including a vision impairment - however, she's been in her foster home for several months now and she functions normally - if there is any impairment it's not significant. She is a good puppy who is a little goofy, always hungry and playful.

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Meet True! He is a 2.5 year old handsome pit mix who has been returned to us because of his owners poor health. True is a sweet boy who is learning better manners. He was left to his own devices for too long and his foster family is working hard to correct that. He is a smart dog but will need someone with a bit of patience to help him realize his brilliance. The great thing is he is very treat motivated. That has benefitted him/us and pushed his training in the right direction. True currently lives with small children and has behaved wonderfully. As he is a very strong dog you may want to think hard about that if you have younger children. He's awesome but can be a bit of a bull in a china shop at times. True can also be a bit mouthy with your hands and sleeves when he first sees you, but calms down quickly. We guess it's just his way of expressing how happy he is to see you. He is fun lovin', friendly and a bit goofy in character. True is not reactive to other dogs from what we've seen and currently lives with two dogs in his foster home. They have played a big part in teaching him doggy rules and he's a quick study. True is playful and active and will thrive in a home where he is in the thick of it! All in all, True is what we like to call a work in progress and has the potential to be a well behaved and loving companion. .

      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). LOOKING FOR A FOSTER FAMILY OR ADOPTER. Osha is a 70lb Boxer mix who came to our attention when she began having her puppies in the shelter. We swooped in to help this poor mom and ten pups get out of jail so to speak and into a loving home. Osha is a sweet dog with a gentle spirit who loves walks and curling up on the couch beside you. She is wonderful with her humans of all sizes. Osha recently decided she does not like other dogs which is why we are seeking either a foster family or adopter for her. We expect that she will not care for cats either as she can be a little prey driven at times. Osha will do wonderfully in a home where she is the queen of her domain. Osha is currently finishing up heartworm treatments as she came in to our program positive. She had obviously not been well cared for in the past and definitely deserved better. She has been spayed and is up to date on all her vaccinations. She is ready for her next adventure with a family to call her own. Please consider giving this girl a chance. You will have a sweet and loving companion and lifelong best friend.

Spirit has completed her heartworm treatment and is doing great. She is now looking for a special forever home. She will need a home with husky savy people and would probably do best as an only dog but she does live with 9 other dogs now and does ok with them, it will just depend on the other dogs:) She is a sweet girl who is looking for someone to love and take care of her:) Due to her life before living chained to a tree she does have some issues with her head and neck area being touched, we are working on these issues and with medication we are having some progress. She will need a very special person that she connects with, when she feels safe she is a very sweet loving dog. Watson

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed. This smart boy is so calm and laid back that he doesn't pay any attention to the neighbors chickens in his foster home or in the neighbor's yard! If you want to see Watson come to life, watch him at meal time. He gets quite happy and dances from foot-to-foot in happy anticipation of being fed. He does like to growl when the UPS man comes by with a package, but only enough to alert his people that someone is there. While he didn't know what to do with a toy when he first went to his foster home, he is now very fond of them. He has not torn up anything that he shouldn't have except for an occasional piece of paper that shouldn't have been on the floor to being with. During hot weather, he likes to chill in kiddie pool and is a good swimmer. He will lay down in a puddle as soon as he sees one! During cold weather his preference is to lay on his human's bed with toys. He does fine in the house with his dog companion and is content to stay in the yard with her too. A fenced-in yard is a must for Watson and 6' high one is preferred because in his early days in his foster home, he proved to be a creative escape artist. While Watson does enjoy all humans, meal time, and toys, he does not necessarily get along with all dogs. So multiple introductions would be best for Watson in a new home with another dog to ensure a good fit. Watson would also do well as an only dog in a home.
