Posted Breed: Australian Terrier / Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) / Mixed. ** PLEASE READ HIS DESCRIPTION BEFORE CALLING/APPLYING! ** His super cute looks are deceiving! Roger is a "project dog"! Which means he will need on-going training and is ONLY available to an SF Bay Area experienced, sport dog home. Roger is a 6 year old, 10lb Australian Terrier/Jack Russell mix, and this guy is ALL terrier!! (His personality is probably closest to that of a Jack Russell) He loves to play with other small dogs, is good with cats (although sometimes he wants to play with them if they run). He LOVES to play (can’t say this enough), and he is very high energy. He has learned a handful of tricks (is a titled Advanced Trick Dog), and he competes in USDAA Agility (with two titles already- SPS and PD)!, so he must go to a home that can continue dog sports with him, and keep him very active, both mentally and physically. He’s like the energizer bunny, and he is one of the smartest dogs we have ever met, scary smart! He does also love to snuggle with his person and give kisses. He’s crate-trained and housebroken. His only issue (besides his energy and intelligence level) is *fear aggression toward strangers* (will bite if a stranger approaches, reaches their hand for/toward him, or spooks him), but with lots of patience, management, training (counter conditioning), and carefully monitored socialization, his fear has decreased, but it may never go completely away, so you can never let your guard down with him. He has gotten a LOT better in his foster home over the last several years, but will need someone to continue the right kind of training with him. He does seem to warm up much faster to young women than to older people or men. This is why he’d do best in a home with NO children and with someone experienced with terrier or high energy breeds (like herding dogs) and near-professional dog behavior experience. Once you give this dog a chance, you will fall in love! He’s really such an absolutely brilliant dog, the life of the party! Roger has been in rescue since 3/2011. Roger is neutered, up to date on his shots, microchipped, and will come with a collar, harness, leash, and bag of food! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chiweenie
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Emma is 1 1/2 year old chiweenie, with her longer body and shorter legs, weighing at 17lbs. She has the cutest face and very expressive big brown eyes, with a single eyebrow on one side. She ended up in a rural shelter with several other dogs (we think her sons, also available - PJ and Pippy) from a hoarder/backyard breeder. She has settled nicely in her foster home, is playful with the five other dogs, and is not too sure of the cats..just kinda stares at them like "what is that!" She is doing great with housebreaking, almost there, and seems to like her crate more and more each day. Emma can be a little shy at first but warms up fairly quickly once you gain her trust. Treats help a lot with that! She follows her foster mom around all day and absolutely LOVES to cuddle. She would make a wonderful and loving companion to most any person or family! Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). PJ (short for Pepper Jack) is a 5 mo. tricolor puppy Dachshund/terrier mix we estimate to be about 15-17lbs when full grown. He came from a hoarding/backyard breeder case from a rural shelter along with his brother (Pippy) and mom (Emma) (also available). When he was first rescued and brought to his foster home, he was incredibly shy and ran away if a person moved towards him. He was terrified of leashes and had no clue how to go on a walk. After a few days of building trust and coming out of his shell, he is now a super excited and playful lil’ guy! He still needs time to build trust, but once he does, he does not want to let his human go. He gets better walking on a leash every day and is completely crate trained. He knows to potty outside but needs to be let out frequently, since he is still young. He also needs lots of toys and bones since he is still teething. He LOVES being outside, playing, running around, and sun bathing. After playing outside, he gets tired and will just tucker out in the sun or on the couch for a few hours. He is such a sweetheart and needs that someone who will be patient with him. Once he is shown patience and love, he will be bonded to you forever. Age: Young
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Honey is a very sweet, and very spirited 1yo 10lb dog. She's playful and snuggly with people she knows and trusts, but wary of new people. She came to our rescue very emaciated, so she now loves food, and as such, will quickly learn to love anyone who gives it to her! She is crate trained and housebroken. She will thrive in an adult only home without small children, and in an environment that will gently help her associate new people and animals with great rewards! In return, she will reward you with her loyal companionship! Age: Adult
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Mouse is a 6yo, tiny 5lb purebred Chihuahua who is as sweet as can be! She gets along great with everyone: dogs, cats, people, although she would prefer a home that is gentle and as an only dog or with a smaller dog (she's easily trampled by bigger dogs). Her favorite thing to do is snuggling on the couch with her person and burrowing under the blankets. She's crate-trained, and mostly housebroken (it's hard having such a tiny bladder!) so needs more frequent potty breaks to be successful. She came to rescue with a fractured rear leg which had to be removed, but she is now healed and gets around on 3 legs with no problem! She's an incredibly sweet little girl who will make the perfect companion for someone! Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (short coat). Harley is best described as a teddy-bear both in temperament and size. This 4-yo, 70lb overweight GSD-BlackBear is about as sweet a dog as you could ask for and is not made of any tough stuff at all. Harley's ideal day is following around his people and taking advantage of any opportunity to cuddle and give lots of kisses. Even though he's an adult, Harley has just started learning about the world and would love someone he trusts to gently show it to him. He's very smart, loves toys and treats and is eager to learn new things to please his people. With some time, he does well living with larger dogs, teenagers, and men, but really loves the ladies! In foster care he has been learning to walk on leash, sit for treats, eat more slowly (and what a diet is!), ride in the car, as well as working on his housebreaking and crate training. Harley would do best with a work from home parent or to hang out in a quiet office. He gets quickly overwhelmed by small children but is currently learning about quiet teenagers. He has not been cat-tested. All this huge, fluffy, goofy, shy bear needs is a forever home and some quiet adventures with you! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Pomeranian / Mixed (medium coat). **Phillip is in need of a foster home (or adopter!)** Phillip is an extra handsome little 6 pound longhaired chi mix, about 1 year old. He has the sweetest personality and LOVES everyone he meets! Phillip is a very playful little guy, and enjoys playing with the other dogs in his foster home. He's also quite content playing by himself with his favorite plush toys and chew bones. But most of all, he loves to cuddle with his person. Phillip needs to go to a home with a yard (even if it's small) and where someone is home most of the day. Philip was born with a slight rear-end deformity, so he runs a little sideways and has to wear a diaper indoors. Phillip is looking for an extra loving, understanding, and patient person/family who will love and accept him as he is. He needs someone willing to make a commitment to him and his special needs. In return he will love you forever! Phillip has been in rescue since 8/2015. A few treats helps speed up the process. He likes to chase cats and bark at them, but he’s used to being around them. He is crate-trained. He would greatly benefit from some training classes. Murray is bonded to another little dog (Tina on our website), but they can go to separate homes. He is a sweet little guy who craves lots of attention and could use more activity each day than he is currently getting. Breed: Border Collie
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Border Collie (medium coat). * SPECIAL NEEDS * "Project Dog" ONLY available to the right home! Skip is an incredibly precious 5yo purebred Border Collie who came to us FERAL, extremely undersocialized and very shut down. It took him 4 weeks to feel safe enough to come out of hiding in his crate when we first got him 3 years ago. The best way to describe him was like a feral cat. He’s very distrustful of strangers. Over the years with his person, he has learned to come, sit, down, enjoys car rides, is great on the leash and learning to walk on the street, and loves to go on hikes and the beach (but needs to be kept away from strangers), is completely crate-trained and housebroken. He’s learning to play with toys, other dogs, and even with his person. He does have herding instinct and will herd cats, chickens, and has been introduced to sheep. He has such an innocent and sweet disposition. He would do best with a single woman, or must go to a home with a woman as primary caretaker (and then husband must be a gentle, soft-spoken man, experienced with shy and fearful dogs (NO KIDS!!!!!)). He would also do better in a household with another more confident dog that he can lean on for support and learn from. He just needs a quiet home with no visitors, best in the country, with someone who will be very patient, only purely loving, and offer him the time and space that he needs, to continue to help guide him to be a more confident dog. Once given the time, he is the most loyal and sweet, snuggly companion. He is a low energy border collie and prefers to spend his days lounging on the couch. Skip has been in rescue since 3/2012. Sex: Male Male

      Location: Milpitas, CA
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Border Collie / Mixed (medium coat). Achilles is a 9yo cattledog mix who came into the shelter as an owner-surrender in early 2015. He has the gentle, kind soul of a medium-sized dog who has unfortunately been through many homes recently through no fault of his own. Because of this, Achilles is a little slow to warm up to new people but is interested and does bond with you after just a few days. He will reward you with a little happy dance and some "stump-waggin'" whenever he sees you! All this guy really needs is a comfy corner spot in a stable quiet home environment again! Achilles is fully housebroken, crate-trained, treat motivated, good on leash, tolerant of other dogs, and a quiet companion. He just wants to be near his people again so would be happiest in a home with a full-time caretaker. Achilles is being fostered with a number of large dogs and a 14yo child. He can get a bit overwhelmed by a lot of noisy living so would blossom best in a home with a retired couple to dote on him again. Achilles has been in rescue since 2/18/2015 and would really like to find his forever home to live out the rest of his golden years! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). *courtesy listing* Pepito's age is unknown but I'm guessing about five years old, neuter chihuahua male, about 5 pounds. He is very skittish of people but does very well with other friendly dogs. He is looking for a home with someone with a lot of patience as he has to learn to trust his human. He lived in abandon lot for and unknown time which might have help become feral. He likes to bolt out the door if he has the opportunity. At my home with my dogs, he has made a lot progress, he follows their lead and it's begin to play with my female Yorkie, I think he might be in love with her :) which is actually very cute to watch...He loves meal time and waits patently while bowls are being prepared. He now wags with his tail when good things happen. He is crate trained, for a chihuahua he is very quite barks only when needed to communicate. Pepito needs some to show him love and to assure him the world isn't such a bad place.
