Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Meet Lady Emily. She is a wonderful dog and has a great disposition. The vet agreed that she certainly doesn't look 10 years old (except a little greying on her muzzle). She loves riding in the car and seems very calm and pleasant when meeting strangers. She is a certified therapy dog. Her previous owner took her to library reading program to read with children. She loves men and women. She has been a little shy around foster mom's cat. Initially not even making eye contact with her and leaving her food bowl the cat approached. She is great with other dogs and will sometimes engage the younger dogs in a game of chase. She does seem to prefer to go out on a leash than to use the dog door. But she is using the dog door without encouragement in the last few days. Emily apparently wasn't into the whole 'obedience' game. But how many bassets are? She may utilize the old selective hearing if you start saying things like 'sit' or 'stay', but she is such a pleasant walker on the leash. The first few nights at her foster home, Emily slept in an open crate, by her own choice. But she has been sneaking up and sleeping on the foot of the bed for the last few nights. That's more of a basset style Miss Emily. Doesn't this lovely young lady sound like the perfect companion. Called and inquire about her today. 09/23/15 To apply online or to see other available basset hounds, go to www.cbhr.com.

More About Basset Hound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Basset Hound
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). This is Willie - he recently celebrated his one year anniversary with his foster family. During that time he devised a crafty plan to push his profile to the top of the available hound list alphabetically and implores you not to contact the website administrator. I mean, just look at that face. How has this not won anyone over in a year? It's beyond comprehension. You know you want to just scratch behind those big old velvety ears! The happiest day of his life was the day he got out of the shelter, just look at that smile. Don't get him wrong, life at his foster home has been great, but he knows the right family is out there just waiting. Willie is a happy young fellow - age is only a number. Willie has a favorite chair as you can tell from his photos. He is a very active little guy, and loves the great outdoors - running and chasing with his other four legged friends at home. And if his four legged friends won't run and play, he'll run all by himself - he loves to run and he isn't afraid to show it - he tears across the yard until he wears himself out. So as you can tell, life is good, but now he's ready to liven up your household. There have been a few bumps along the road. And maybe Willie did put a little of the "can" in cantankerous - it's called personality, people. With a little guidance and structure though, he will make a colorful addition to just the right family. He's doing well with other dogs and takes to meeting new people - nudging them for affection. Don't let Willie's scheme to move to the top of the basset list be in vain, call CBHR today and see about making him your new best friend. 07/14/16 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina. But I warm up after a few minutes, and I'm finding out they don't want to hurt me, just pet me. These kind people are feeding me well and taking care of me, and I really like them. And we're having lots of fun. I would do best in a home without small children. I can be a little rambunctious. I love to run and play in the yard. You should see how fast I can run after a ball! I need someone who will love me and show me what the good life is all about. Will you? Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Chloe is all done with her heart worm treatment, getting her teeth all clean and shined up, and is officially ready to begin the search for her new best friend! 11/29/16 Hello basset hound admirers, I am Chloe, or you can call me Mooney, my foster mom likes that name too, and I'm so happy that I was scooped up by CBHR recently. Life for the past year and a half or so, prior to being rescued I was mostly kept in a crate. My parents divorced and then my dad became ill and could no longer care for me - yada yada yada - here I am. Foster mom describes me as a petite 47 pound basset of a certain age. But despite the actual number (11ish), I’m a lively golden girl with a sweet and sunny disposition. More importantly, I am cute as a button – just take a look at these photos. I do have a little hitch in my giddy-up when it comes to my hind legs, but that's only an issue when going up stairs. I can do it, but to be realistic, I need a home with very few stairs. Once inside or outside, I'm good to go. I'm sweet and mellow and I do like things a certain way. I'm currently bumping noses and getting along famously with my foster brother, it just took a little time to adjust. We mostly ignore each other, but I yearn for the attention of my humans. I now know happiness again and my tail wagging proves it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I prefer a home with no small children, just a hunch. I like to ignore my foster brother Buster and that works out just fine for both of us. I am eating well, I’m potty-trained, don't chew or climb on the furniture, and there’s no counter surfing - those crazy days are over. I am usually wagging my tail and will lay by the door waiting for my foster mom to come home and I love to lay on one side and foster bro Buster on the other when she is working at her desk. My heartworm treatment is just about over, and I'm almost be ready to start my brand new life with you as my bestest friend. Foster mom says she loves me so much I can stay as long as it takes to find just the right home. Just give me a chance. I promise you won’t regret it. – Chloe 09/25/16 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina. Breed: Basset Hound
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). MerryBelle has whipped her foster home into shape and is now looking for a forever home where she can do the same. Medical stuff is all done and she is better than ever. Her biggest challenge was getting her foster mom trained. This girl runs the place on a daily basis. If you need a wakeup call, she's got it covered. Don't forget, she likes an after supper nap, but then it's time for a little walk to check out the neighborhood and she will not take no for an answer. When it's time to walk... it's time to walk. She may have short, very slow, interesting legs, but fitness is important to this gal. With personality to spare, this 9 year old cutie pie loves to wag her happy tail. She does require a home without stairs. She is good about letting you know when she needs to go out by standing at the door, but can't really make it 7 plus hours a day without a potty break, so will need a home that can accommodate that. She is quite the outdoorsy type and loves lying in the sun or snooping around in the grass for scents. She lets her nose guide her in the direction of the most enticing scent. As any basset does, she isn't shy about letting you know when it's breakfast or supper time. So if you're looking for an honest conversationalist of a hound, MerryBelle might be for you. She hopes her forever home will have other four leggers for her to play with as well, so she can bark at them too. No matter to her and those challenging legs when things happen, she rights herself , gets her legs back under her and is on her way. She will pull like a tank to get to a scent, bird or squirrel nearby. Foster mom uses a harness for her to be able to pick her up and turn her in the direction she needs to go . And it also helps to steady her.. MerryBelle will make you laugh and smile several times a day. She is kind, funny and very loving. She does the best she can with the equipment she's got and doesn't want you holding that against her as she attempts to put her front paws in your lap. She's a good car rider, loves short distance walks, does well on a leash, as long as you have time to stop and smell the roses. Maybe you're a retired person with strong arms to carry her sometime? She likes kids, but they'd probably make her over do it. They call her thumper because of the sound her happy tail makes against all the furniture, and she runs with her back legs together like a little bunny. She's waiting on just the right new best friend. Could it be you? 03/08/17 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina. He enjoys his Bloodhound hostess and runs and plays with her every day. He will crate, sit, catch his treats mid air, loves to ride, doesn't mind his nails trimmed, and is completely house broken! Who could ask for more? He helps with the barn chores at his foster home and has taken to the horses without any trouble. Trevor is HW positive and will undergo treatment after he has surgery to remove a large lipoma on his neck and shoulder. He is very easy to fall in love with and would make a family a fantastic dog. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). This dear soul was rescue last minute from the Harnett NC animal shelter. The woman who contacted CBHR about Rosoce is an awesome person and submitted an application on his behalf to a foundation that helps with shelter animals. The foundation has pledged to donate $300 to his care if we can raise $300 in donations. And this man will need every penny. When Roscoe arrived he was in pretty bad shape. He is unneutered and his scrotum hangs so low he is dragging it and it’s quite irritated. The doctor said the only way to solve the problem is to remove it when he is neutered. In addition he had multiple parasites, a urinary tract infection, is anemic, has a torn ACL, a touch of arthritis, and, what pains us most, is an old wound where tie out he was on dug into his side. Wound is almost healed, but bad scar. His doctor said luckily his torn ACL is not causing him pain or limiting his movement so it will not need surgery. However, despite all of the neglect he suffered he is still a sweet, loving, gentle soul. In fact, the foster family who kept him for a few nights while he was awaiting his transport said he would howl anytime they separated him from their children. He is THAT loving and social! Please help us help Roscoe! Roscoe will need a neuter, blood work to figure out the cause of the anemia, antibiotics to clear up his urinary tract infection, and likely meds to help his arthritis. Roscoe will need sponsorship of at least $700. 09/28/16 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina. Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Lucky is lucky indeed. Blind and hearing impaired, his life was deemed unworthy by the high kill shelter where he ended up. Fortunately CBHR quickly scooped him up in their caring arms and he is now learning he is loved and valued. Despite his limitations, Lucky gets around well using his nose and sense of touch. He is able to navigate in and out of a doggie door and up and down a few steps. Though he enjoys exploring and isn’t afraid to get around on his own, he would not do well with a lot of steps (getting up is not a problem…getting down is another story). Lucky may be a bit testy and cautious around new people at first but once you have earned his trust, he loves to be loved and petted. He would not do well around younger children. He hasn’t been around cats but since they could easily avoid him, it shouldn’t be problematic. He is good around older dogs who give him space but might not like young or playful dogs. He enjoys short strolls outside but likes being inside most of the time. He doesn’t mind being in his crate and will stay in it all night with no problems. He is doing well with house training but could have an accident if he gets confused where he is and cannot get outside in time. Patience and routine are key with Lucky. Lucky needs eye drops twice a day to control pressure in his eyes. He is good about getting these as long as he can smell you and the drops. He seems to know they help him feel better so he usually doesn’t fight it.
