More About Basset Hound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $200. Hello world, it’s me, Astro! I’ve been down on my luck for years, but this year is my grand comeback! Rescued from a shelter and nursed back to health by the wonderful volunteers at Basset Buddies, I’ve now got some pep in my step and I’m looking for my forever home. My three favorite things in the world are eating, taking long naps, and playing with my foster sister and brother. My foster mom always knows when I’m a hungry boy, and if she forgets, I let out an arooooo as a gentle reminder. I also have a happy dance I do while she’s getting my dinner ready. She laughs at me, so I guess that means I’m entertaining too. I’m a gentle guy who loves belly rubs. I’ll just plop right down in front of you for some good scratches! You’d really be missing out if you didn’t apply to adopt me. I’m one cool dude with a lot of love to give, and who wouldn’t want to adopt an Astro?

Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $100. Hi, I’m Moxie! I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Florida, but I spent most of my life on the road as part of a traveling dog show. Because of glaucoma, I lost sight first in my right eye and then in my left. My previous owner/trainer didn't think people wanted to see an eyeless dog, so now I'm retired and ready for the next chapter of my life! Just because I can’t see doesn’t mean I can’t get around! I still like to do some of my show tricks, like climbing up, jumping down, spinning in circles, and going through anything that resembles a hoop or a tunnel. I'm energetic but not overly so: A solid 30-minute walk a day takes care of my needs. I like to pace around as I get to know the space I'm in. Listening to household sounds like the dishwasher, washing machine, and other ackground noises helps me get comfy, and the sounds put me right to sleep. I’m still learning how to sleep on a dog bed; I’ve never had one before so they are new to me. I’ve spent my whole life being part of a pack, so the more the merrier! I get along great with all kinds of people and with other dogs. I’m pretty laid back so cats shouldn’t be a problem. I only play with toys when I'm alone. When you leave the house, I'll entertain myself with naps and toys until you get home.I'm a talker if you get to know me; I don’t howl, but I will annunciate to the point you think I'm trying to speak English! I really love food -- I mean REALLY love it! I can’t eat it fast enough, so you’ll need to help me slow down so I don’t get a tummy ache. I’m ready for the next stage of my life: a new family to love me, daily walks on a leash, and ear and belly rubs. Sounds like a great retirement, and I can't wait!

Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $100. Rodeo is a very happy boy. He loves attention and gets so excited when his people come home, even if you only went out to get the mail. He likes to ride in the car and go for walks, though he can't walk very far. Rodeo has a bad hip & knee so short walks are in order with no steps or steep inclines. U-turns and backing-up are not his best tricks. However, you don't have to worry about him getting on the furniture! He loves his dog beds, and will let you rub his belly all you want. He does well with cats, other dogs and kids. He is such a loving sweet guy who deserves a furever family that will love him.
