Posted Breed: Beagle (short coat). DOB: 11/13 Weight: ~30 lbs. Gino is a good boy, somewhat timid around new people at first. He gets along with other dogs. He loves to run and play so would do best with a family with a fenced yard. He is a good boy but he doesn't like to be pushed into something he doesn't like to do. He doesn't like to be picked up or given a bath. He needs a family with no small children. If he has something that doesn't belong to him, you have to offer him a treat in return to get the item back. He has had a rabies shot, 7-way shot, bordetella, and been wormed. He is also neutered, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Gino came into the shelter on 11/1/14. Our adoption fee is $130.00 and it helps to cover a portion of the dog's vetting costs. The adoption process includes the completion of an application followed by an interview. More About Beagle Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). DOB: 5/10. Weight: ~60 lbs. Mr. Personality, Cato is a great dog! He is very strong so he will need a strong pack leader. He lost his foster home but he was house trained and crate trained and loves to lay on a rug and chew a toy all day long with you in the same room. He is really very sweet in a hulk sort of way. He is also very intelligent. His energy level is high out in the yard (Must be fenced) where he loves to run but he is a couch potato inside. His former foster family had big trees in the back yard and he enjoyed playing with a 5-6 foot branch that had fallen out of the trees and he would pick it up and run for all he's worth! He is just a play-baby at heart. He would do best with older kids and they need to be part of the training that he will need with his new family. He is a lover but not of cats and he needs to be the only dog. His adoption has been sponsored so he will come with a bag of food, flea/tick meds and heartworm prevention. He has had a rabies shot, 7-way shot, bordetella, and been wormed. He is also neutered, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Cato came into the shelter on 4/10/14. Our adoption fee is $130.00 and it helps to cover a portion of the dog's vetting costs. The adoption process includes the completion of an application followed by an interview. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). DOB: 12/10. WEIGHT: ~50 lbs Elsie is an older gal who looks to have been bred many times. She has been tested positive for thyroid. She will need medication for the remainder of her life. She is a real love bug and just wants to please. We are on a mission to help this poor girl find the loving, healthy, happy home she deserves. We need to get a picture of her with her big, pink teddy bear. She loves to carry it around with her and it's adorable. It may be the first real thing she's had to call her own! Does fine around young children. Update March 4, 2014 - This is what her foster mom has to say about her: Elsie is house trained, will bust out or destroy any kennel you put her in but luckily she is pretty well behaved in the house as long as there are no drawers or cabinet doors she can get into. Also will clear a kitchen counter really quick. Loves to chew up collars and leashes and an occasional coffee table book. She does better if she has plenty of tennis balls to tear up during the day. She is very pushy and bossy with other dogs. If someone is in the spot she wants, she will sit on them till they move. Likes to hide all the toys under the cushion of the couch so she can come back and get them later. She does not start fights, just likes things her way. No cats or small critters of any kind. Gets along with other dogs. It's amazing they tolerate her behavior." Well, that's pretty clear! Our adoption fee is $130.00 and it helps to cover a portion of the dog's vetting costs. He even jumped in the bath for me (with a little assistance from Austin), and he stood perfectly still the whole time!! In true pit bull form, he was wagging his tail as soon as he was shown a little love! It appears he has forgiven what humans have done to him in the past, and he is very much ready for a new life of love and happiness!! I try very hard to not have favorites, but he is definitely something very special Jack came to the shelter 3/15 and is in a foster home.
