Posted Breed: Beagle / Feist / Mixed (short coat). Once upon a time, there was a 5 year old, 35 pound Beagle/Feist Mix who was left behind in a house that had been abandoned. It was a horrible place with awful conditions, and Dorothy was not alone. Other dogs were there, too, including her friend, Roxie. We brought them all into rescue, and they have all been adopted except for Dorothy and Roxie. Dorothy tells Roxie they will both be adopted and will live happily ever after with families that will give them extra TLC and never abandon them, never leave them behind. (posted 7/9/15, ME, N/A) **It is rare that we know with certainty the ages or mixes that make up our wonderful dogs, but we do our best to be as accurate as possible based upon our many years in rescue.** As Celebrate Home Dogs, the total fee, which includes adoption and transport, is only $200.00. This isn't because the dog is worth less. It's because they're worth more. We want dogs like these in your home as quickly as possible. They have been waiting too long, and they need their own beds (or yours) in their own home. More importantly, they need your love.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Flat-coated Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). What a handsome boy this is! His name is Mr. Brooks, and he is a 1 1/2 year old mix of Border Collie and Flat Coated Retriever, a fine mix indeed! At 35 lbs. he is quite manageable, but don't forget that both breeds need some physical time every day! Longs walks, romping around the yard, and chasing a ball would be a good start! He is definitely not meant to live in an apartment or in the city. Mr. Brooks' foster calls him "an awesome dog in lots of ways!" See if you can find more than lovable, loving, sweet hearted, and always ready to spend time with you! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Meet Chance. We named him that because he needs one. This 1 year old mix of Beagle and Lab is a gentle, loving soul who is a timid boy. He isn't sure of people and so is frightened when he doesn't know you. Once he does, though, he'll be your shadow. At 20 lbs., his trust and the love that comes with it will grow and grow. A home with children will not work for Chance as he needs one in which things are quiet and non-startling. It's time to give Chance a chance! How about it? Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). This lovely Labrador Retriever mix is Maddie. She is between 2 and 3 years old, and she weighs around 50 pounds. Maddie is sweetness in its purest form. She loves people, other dogs, and, well, she just plain loves life!!! As with most rescue dogs, however, Maddie’s past is a mystery. We know very little about it. We see glimmers of their pasts in some dogs, as we do in Maddie and her fear of being without food. Yes, that's what we said. She is afraid of not having enough food to eat. This tells us something about that past of hers, doesn't it? She is nervous about sharing and even takes her filled food bowl and hides most of the food so that she can go back and eat it alone later. How sad! Maddie is indeed a special girl, and this doesn't diminish that. She just needs to be fed apart from other dogs. (Most of us do that anyway. It's usually best to give each dog privacy when eating. That way they don't have to gulp their food down!) So, here she is! Our Maddie, a survivor, and a lover. “Sweetness in its purest form!” She needs a forever home. Posted Breed: Spitz / Pomeranian / Mixed (long coat). Raven and Sasha are a package deal. They come together as if they were one. Their owner was put into a nursing home and had to leave them behind. Both are sweet, and they are committed to each other. Raven relies more on Sasha than Sasha does on her. Sasha, a Pomeranian, is 13 and has a lovely, long coat as does Raven, a Spitz/Pomeranian mix of 11. The reason why they look shaven is that, when they came to us, their coats were so matted that we couldn't untangle them. Of the two, 15 lb. Sasha is the more active, enjoying time walking with each other. Raven is a larger dog at about 40 lbs. (We haven't broken it to her yet that she needs to go on a diet!) They both do well on a leash and get along nicely with other dogs, too. So. Here they are, a wonderful pair of sweet dogs that need a home together. It's the only way we will adopt them out. Together. As one. (posted 5/27/17, ME, N/A) Raven and Sasha are being sponsored by The PetFinder Foundation as well as Susie’s Senior Dog Grant Program which is fully funding the adoption and transport costs of both dogs to the same home. **It is rare that we know with certainty the ages or mixes that make up our wonderful dogs, but we do our best to be as accurate as possible based upon our many years in rescue.** Weight Scale: Small = less than 25 Medium = 26-60 Large = 61-100 XL = 100+

Energetic, intelligent, and social, Nugget loves playing with other dogs at the local dog daycare and has an A+ report card with every visit. Even though he came to his foster home with no training at all, he already knows how to sit, and he is getting much better on the leash. Nugget loves to play fetch with his Birmingham Barons baseball and stuffed toys. He shows no aggression towards cats or smaller dogs, only some enthusiasm that needs to be tamed a little. Nugget needs a home where he can get lots of attention and exercise--he might even like to have a doggie sibling, as long as they are big enough to love wrestling in the yard! Nugget has all his vaccinations, has been neutered, and tested negative for heartworms. Nugget would love to be your faithful friend and playmate! He is about a year old.
