Posted Breed: Beagle / Feist / Mixed (short coat). Once upon a time, there was a 5 year old, 35 pound Beagle/Feist Mix who was left behind in a house that had been abandoned. It was a horrible place with awful conditions, and Dorothy was not alone. Other dogs were there, too, including her friend, Roxie. We brought them all into rescue, and they have all been adopted except for Dorothy and Roxie. Dorothy tells Roxie they will both be adopted and will live happily ever after with families that will give them extra TLC and never abandon them, never leave them behind. (posted 7/9/15, ME, N/A) **It is rare that we know with certainty the ages or mixes that make up our wonderful dogs, but we do our best to be as accurate as possible based upon our many years in rescue.** Dorothy is a Celebrate Home Dog, which means that the total fee which includes adoption and transport is only $200.00. This is not because there is something wrong with her; we just want to get them into your home as quickly as possible. She has been waiting too long, and she needs her own bed (or yours) in her own home. This all includes quarantine, worming, all vaccines, heartworm testing, heartworm and tick/flea preventatives, neutering, health certificate, transport, and complete medical records.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). This is Connor, a friend of the "A" puppies! He was found abandoned along with them in the backyard of a newly purchased home. When we brought the A pups into rescue, we brought Connor, too! Of course!! Connor is a 7 month old mix of Border Collie and Labrador Retriever. He presently weighs about 35 lbs. and will grow to somewhere in the range of 45. As with the A puppies, Connor also came to us in bad shape, clearly missing hair. And all of his hair has not yet grown back in. He's gorgeous just the same!!! This boy has an awesome nature. He loves to play with other dogs, and people, too! And to make him even cuter, he really loves his toys, and carries them around in his mouth. Such a sweetheart! (posted 3/19/17, PK, N/A) **It is rare that we know with certainty the ages or mixes that make up our wonderful dogs, but we do our best to be as accurate as possible based upon our many years in rescue.** Adoption: $285 which covers quarantine, shots, worming, food, medical records, spaying/neutering, and an Alabama State Health Certificate. Transport, if needed : $120.00 We consider the transport to be of great importance and, as such, take particular care of the dogs during the trip from Alabama. We make every effort to arrive with healthy and minimally stressed dogs.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Springer Spaniel / Mixed (short coat). Nugget is a rescue with a heart of gold! Energetic, intelligent, and social, Nugget loves playing with other dogs at the local dog daycare and has an A+ report card with every visit. Even though he came to his foster home with no training at all, he already knows how to sit, and he is getting much better on the leash. Nugget loves to play fetch with his Birmingham Barons baseball and stuffed toys. He shows no aggression towards cats or smaller dogs, only some enthusiasm that needs to be tamed a little. Nugget needs a home where he can get lots of attention and exercise--he might even like to have a doggie sibling, as long as they are big enough to love wrestling in the yard! Nugget has all his vaccinations, has been neutered, and tested negative for heartworms. Nugget would love to be your faithful friend and playmate! He is about a year old. (posted 3/18) Special Adoption fee: $200 for adoption and transport *It is rare that we know with certainty the ages or mixes that make up our wonderful dogs, but we do our best to be as accurate as possible based upon our many years in rescue.**

This 1 year old mix of Beagle and Lab is a gentle, loving soul who is a timid boy. He isn't sure of people and so is frightened when he doesn't know you. Once he does, though, he'll be your shadow. At 20 lbs., his trust and the love that comes with it will grow and grow. It's time to give Chance a chance! How about it? Posted Breed: Whippet / Mixed (short coat). Copper is a special needs dogs in search of a home with other dogs. He is about 2 1/2 years old and weighs 40 lbs. He is neutered and up to date on shots. Here's what his current owner says: In April of 2015, I adopted a dog from a local animal rescue organization. He was badly neglected and had never lived inside when he came to me. I have taught him to use the stairs and not be afraid of ceiling fans along with may other daily activities. He has come so far and I am now realizing he is not progressing any more and will always have his special needs. I have tried herbal remedies, prescription medication, training (for confidence), doggie day care, and even adopted a second dog. He is always in the second bed room hiding and never has fun at home with just myself and his sister.. BUT he thrives in households with multiple dogs. When I visit home and everyone brings their dogs together, he is 100% different than when he is at home alone with me. He is happy and plays and runs around with them, with so much less time in another room alone. Unfortunately I cannot support the multiple dogs needed to make him happy. That is why I am reaching out to you. I’d like to find him a home with someone who has had special needs dogs and that has many dogs already. This person would definitely need to have experience with neglected dogs, so there is no surprise with his quirky behavior. Adoption fee $200 Transport, if needed : $120.00 We consider the transport to be of great importance and, as such, take particular care of the dogs during the trip from Alabama. We make every effort to arrive with healthy and minimally stressed dogs.

Posted Breed: Canaan Dog / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Her foster had to rescue her from the high kill shelter. She just had to. You see, Biscuit looks just like the very first dog she had rescued when she created Crossing Paths. So, she brought Biscuit and her puppy of almost 5 months out of the shelter and into the arms of rescue. Biscuit is a 2 year old mix of Canaan Dog and Labrador Retriever. She is an overweight 59 pounds, but she'll clearly be thinner than that after her diet., so we'll put her in the medium size range. (Don't even get her started talking about the diet!) We knew when she came to us that she was, indeed, overweight and that she had a puppy, but we didn't know she had heart worm, for which she has been treated, or that she was pregnant again! To look into her most loving eyes which reflect all that she's been through, your heart melts and you want to take her home. The head of our rescue did. How about you? Sheldon is a 1 year old mix of Border Collie and Flat Coated Retriever, a fine mix indeed! At 35 lbs. he is quite manageable, but don't forget that both breeds need some physical time every day! Longs walks, romping around the yard, and chasing a ball would be a good start! He is definitely not meant to live in an apartment or in the city. Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Only hours left before Cindy was going to be euthanized, and the shelter called and asked us to take her instead. The people at the shelter loved this girl, and didn't want to do it. But her time had come. As always, Crossing Paths brought her into rescue and discovered that she was quite pregnant, the next day giving birth to three males (Cocoa, Clay, Chester) and two females (Cleo, Cricket). They are also up for adoption. Although we only knew Cindy's history as far back as the shelter that had called us, we could tell just by looking at her that she had had multiple pregnancies. We don't know if that was simply because she was on her own, or, and this is very likely, if she was used as a breeding dog by uncaring humans. No matter her experience, however, she came to us a sweet and loving girl. She is shy but will come to you in a gentle manner, and you soon realize that all of her movements are gentle, almost poetic. She is selective about which dogs she likes, and one has to wonder what she may have encountered with dogs before. At 3 years old, Cindy is an American Bulldog/Terrier mix. Her short coat is silver and white, and she weighs 65 lbs. This gentle and sweet girl loves humans, loves to be with them and loves to be petted by them. She's such a good girl who needs a forever home that, hopefully can offer her a fireplace where she will feel warm, comforted, secure, and loved. We feel that her time has come, but to be adopted, not euthanized.
