Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet Kona! She is a happy puppy who is full of energy. She loves running in the yard, playing with toys and other dogs. Her tail is constantly wagging. She is pretty well behaved for a puppy but still has some mischievousness about her. She gets along well with other dogs (large and small) and cats. She is somewhat crate trained as she doesn’t mind being crated with her playmates but there will obviously be a period of adjustment when she has to be crated alone. She is really doing well with potty-training. Kona is still a little shy with new people and currently prefers the company of dogs to people. She will take treats out of your hand but still is unsure about receiving physical attention from people. She is good with my son as she mainly avoids his affection but does fine when she is being held and he pets her. She is a black mouth cur labrador mix (estimated) and is currently 45 pounds at 6 months old, but she is obviously still growing. If you want a companion that will love you unconditionally and you have time to provide lots of love and attention Kona will be an excellent choice. Please contact app@aarfhouston.org for more information about this dog. You can apply online by clicking on Application . Once your application is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet at one of our adoption events. Thank you for considering a rescue! The adoption fee includes vet check, vaccinations, Bordetella, de-worming, rabies, spay/neuter and microchip. There is a an additional $12.99 fee for Home Again for a lifetime registration of the microchip. It is against the law in the State of Texas for a rescue not to be sterilized so we have to make sure it gets completed and that we have record of it. NOTE: In our bios, we provide information based on our volunteer's experience with a particular dog; such as temperament, training, and ability to get along with others. AARF is a 501(c)3 Non Profit, all breed, no kill organization. Our group is always in need of donations in order to continue to give the needed medical care to our rescues. Adoption fees do not begin to cover all of the medical costs. Any donation, no matter how small is a big help and is greatly appreciated. Please help us to continue to help them. Thank you.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). My name is Gizelle. I am young and healthy and mostly quiet and stoic. I seldom bark except at those rotten squirrels in the tree teasing me and some strange dogs. I was found wandering down the bayou behind my foster home looking for someone to give my loyalty and devotion to. I absolutely love water, when I see a hose, I run, jump, and twirl chasing the water coming out. I can jump 5 feet easily to get to the water. I can also clear a 6' fence, so should never be left unattended in the backyard. I would probably be safest in an apartment environment so I don't have the opportunity to go exploring. I do come back but love to go see what is going on around the neighborhood. Please contact app@aarfhouston.org for more information about this dog. You can apply online by clicking on Application . Location: Houston, TX
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Dottie Beth is a sweet girl. She loves to play with her fursiblings. She is a Melrose Park girl and her life is so much better than it was. She is obedient and crate trained. She is a chunky girl but probably the sweetest love bug you will ever know! She loves her fur siblings. We are still working on potty training for inside as every now and then she has an accident but for the most part she is good about doing her business outside. She does not sleep in a crate at night anymore as she prefers to sleep with two of her fur siblings in Mom's room on floor right by the bed. She does like to guard at times and not really liking anyone approaching her space that she doesn't know but is in no way aggressive or threatening. Dottie Beth was rescued out of Melrose Park. She was not in good shape, and was pregnant. Taken to the vet, Dottie lost all of her babies. She has been with a foster ever since. Dottie Beth was diagnosed with Mammary Cancer on January 8, 2016. She will be undergoing surgery very soon to remove the tumors. Please contact app@aarfhouston.org for more information about this dog or to schedule a meet and greet. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). Rosie may be a Lab/Rottweiler mix. She's approximately 2 years 8 months old and weighs around 50 lbs.. She loves to run and play and is so smart! She knows the commands sit, stay, down and wait. Rosie is very affectionate. She is always happy to see you and, after a joyful greeting, settles down and loves to snuggle up. Her preferred place is curled up at your feet. Rosie also enjoys tumbling about with her bonded brother, Sam. Rosie is learning to walk on a leash, is crate-trained and housebroken. I didn't have to teach her at all. She came to me ready to do her business outside! Rosie has not been around cats, so I don't know how she would do with them. Since she's a strong girl, she would probably do better with older children. However, she is very loving with my 3 & 5 year old grandchildren. She's always trying to give them kisses. Rosie is friendly and playful with the other dogs in our pack, however she does not like strange dogs to charge her. With proper introduction, she will become comfortable with another dog and soon they will be playmates. Rosie has accepted new foster dogs that come to our home with no problem. She does need a bit of socialization with the outside world. We are working on that. Rosie has been trained not to sit on sofas or beds, or to jump up on counters in case new owners would prefer the same. However, I'm sure she wouldn't mind learning how to be a couch potato or snuggling up with you! Rosie is a joy, very affectionate with her family and very loyal. She would make a wonderful best buddy! Rosie and Sam are very bonded and I would love for them to find a home together, but it is not a must. The adoption fee includes vet check, vaccinations, Bordetella, de-worming, rabies, spay/neuter and microchip.
