Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). HI THERE, I’M MARS! I’M READY AND WAITING TO BE HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU! I SURE DO LOVE TENNIS BALLS! CHECK OUT MY VIDEO! This handsome guy came to us from a southern shelter in June 2014, when he was about 1 ½ years old. Mars is happy-go-lucky, adores people and is ready to play on short notice. It’s hard to be in a bad mood with Mars around. He’s bound to bring out smiles with his silly expressions and clownish ways. Mars has an addiction…toys, toy and more toys, and will give you his undivided attention if he hears a squeaker. Balls rank high on his list of favorites…he’ll play fetch all day long. He hasn’t gotten the memo that he’s supposed to let you have the ball when he retrieves it, but there’s always hope. Mars is housebroken and will let you know if he needs to head outside. He’s crate-trained but will fuss to be let out if he knows someone is home. His leash manners could use polishing, so be prepared for training and use of a proper harness. Mars will sit on command and is quite the gentleman on car rides. He's very food-motivated and will be all yours for a yummy treat. He loves to run and play with great enthusiasm, meaning his energy level may be a bit too much for toddlers and small children. He’s a love bug with the older children in his foster home and eagerly greets them with doggy hugs and kisses. And shhh…he’s been known to snuggle and snooze in bed with his foster parents. You may be wondering why this fantastic dog is still waiting for his forever home. Simply stated…we want to be sure Mars is adopted by people who understand that, although he is wonderful, there are issues that require attention and diligence. You see, he’s quite selective when it comes to other dogs and isn’t a fan of cats. An experienced owner will understand that he must be watched closely and handled properly in the presence of other animals. This is not a guy for doggy parks or leisurely strolls around a neighborhood when other dogs are out and about. Care will also need to be taken on visits to the vet and other new places. Mars is insecure in unfamiliar surroundings and may react badly out of fear. This boy is NOT mean, not by a long shot! He worships people, is completely loving, and loyal to a fault. Many dogs don’t care for other animals, and this is the case with Mars. He needs a home with people who will keep him safe and happy as an only pet. A decent sized yard for him to run and play fetch in would be ideal. There will need to be a privacy fence that blocks his view of neighboring dogs or animals passing nearby. To sum it up: Mars is a “people dog” in search of a very special home and family. If you give this affectionate teddy-bear-of-a-dog a chance, Mars will offer all the snuggles, love and laughter your heart can hold. This very special boy has been waiting so long to hear someone say, “I want THAT dog!” Could that someone be you? All of the dogs/cats listed are located in or near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Adoption fees are $245 for dogs ($95 for Seniors 8 years+) and $60 for cats, to help cover vet bills for spay/neuter of all adoptable pets as well as getting them up-to-date on their basic vaccinations, and for starting heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Puppies and kittens will go into adoptive homes as Foster-to-Adopt until old enough to have spay/neuter surgery. No pet will be officially adopted without being spayed/neutered and vaccinated (unless there are health risks in doing so). We will require an approved on-line application which is available on our website at ForeverLoveRescue.com. Be prepared for a Meet-and-Greet and a basic home check to be done on or before adoption day, to ensure that the pet can be safe in the new home and that everyone involved is comfortable with each other. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Forever Love Starts with a Wet Nose and Ends with a Tail Cooper is a happy go lucky type dog with a goofy personality. He is full of energy and loves to run and play. His favorite toy is tennis ball and can entertain himself for hours with one. Cooper is very obedient knowning basic commands such as sit, down, stay, sit and down stay for longer then 1 minute each, wait and come. He loves other dogs and does good with them of all sizes, he is cat friendly as well. Cooper is not destructive and has good house manners and loves to lay across your lap on the couch. He is completely housebroken and crate trained. In the month in his foster home he has became very bonded with his foster dad and canine siblings. He has learned to wait and not bolt thru open doors or gates. Cooper does have a few negative traits that are still a work in progress, he does not like to share his food with his canine friends but is doing well with eating on opposite sides of the room. He also protest(barks) for the first 10 minutes he goes into crate but after that he is quiet. Also he could use a little more leash training as he still wants to pull. Cooper would love people of his own and canine siblings and fenced yard so he can run for hours. All of the dogs/cats listed are located in or near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Adoption fees are $195 for dogs ($95 for Seniors 8 years+) and $60 for cats, to help cover vet bills for spay/neuter of all adoptable pets as well as getting them up-to-date on their basic vaccinations, and for starting heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Forever Love Starts with a Wet Nose and Ends with a Tail HI, I'M DIEGO! DO YOU LOVE TO SNUGGLE AND PLAY? ME TOO! Diego came into rescue January 2015, when he was 1-2 years old. It seems this sweet boy spent his short life living outdoors at the end of a chain. Oh, how Diego has blossomed in foster care! He adores people of all ages, including children, and and absolutely craves attention. He may be a little too enthusiastic for small children, so care will need to be taken in that regard. Diego hasn't gotten the memo that he's larger than your average lap dog, as he loves to get as close as possible to snuggle and offer pittie kisses. This very smart pup will sit, shake, down and rollover on command; we're still working on "stay" and "come." His leash manners could use some polishing, although a proper harness and additional training will be beneficial. Diego has excellent car manners and will often nod off in the passenger seat. Toys rock his world and this silly guy is always ready to romp and play. He'll chase a ball all day long but hasn't gotten the hang of returning it to you just yet. While Diego shares nicely with humans, he's not inclined to share toys, treats or food with other dogs and may act out in an aggressive manner. He's housebroken and crate trained in foster care and may just need a refresher course in his new home, as he gets the hang of a new routine. Diego is open to meeting friendly, submissive dogs but will likely not do well with dogs who make him feel challenged or threatened. He's not a fan of kitties, so we recommend there be no cats in his home. If you can offer Diego the exercise, playtime and loving care he craves, he's ready to make your acquaintance. A fenced yard is would be ideal. He's had some hard knocks in life, but Diego has shaken off the dust and is ready for his happily-ever-after to begin.
