Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Please contact Jennifer (Jlsetlak@aol.com) for more information about this pet. Hey there everyone, I'm Gus. My foster parents call me Gustafer since I'm a happy go-lucky kind of guy. Adults, kids, babies, other dogs and probably even cats, I'm just a buddy to all! Found as a stray in West Virginia, I probably was let lose for not wanting to chase varmints. I do follow my nose but am not a determined boy wanting to be on the hunt. I'd rather kick back, take in a good walk then sac it out for a nap! I enjoy sitting and just looking over my domain, take in the sights and enjoying your company. I walk well on a leash for a hound dog, I do enjoy meeting other dogs and people along the way, so will try and say "Hey" if I have a chance. Haven't found anyone I was not ready to greet yet so guess I'm a social kind of guy. In my foster home there are 6 other dogs, one who I really like is a Chihuahua but he does not seem to like me. He's a bossy little boy but I'm trying to win him over. Take a look at my video. I met a boy named Bischi, (little black dog),who I really liked and we played. That was great fun! I eat side by side, am learning to wait for my bowl and I already wait for my finger full of Peanut Butter! Oh boy, I do like that. Dad has tried to introduce me to Fruit loops. Those are not my thing. I do like Captain Crunch though!!! Mom's into the healthy stuff and apples is not my thing either... Dad gave me a bite of a hamburger. Ok, I think I like dad better than mom!!!!! I've shown to be house trained with only one accident. I am in a kennel along side my buddies during the day. At night I sleep quietly in the bedroom and wait for you to let me out without a peep. Dad does not think I have ever played much, so he is teaching me to wrestle. I go belly up for a good face and neck massage.Oh, it's so much fun when he comes down to my level to play. I hope to have either a 2 or 4 legged buddy to play with. I’d be fine as an only dog or with buddies. Either way, mom and dad think I'm a cool boy. I have found my "baying bark" but I'm not out of control. Usually only if my foster buds bark do I bay! Mom says it really not loud, just deep and long. She just laughs when I do it. Makes me feel funny! Oh well! Guess "I Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog" like the song goes.... I'm Gus, a BIG fun loving kind of guy with a heart of gold and soft brown Eyes! ______________ Gus appears to be a purebred Blue Tick Coonhound who ended up in a very high kill WV pound as a stray. Hounds in WV are often purchased for hunting and if they aren't good hunters, they just turn them loose. Gus isn't much of a barker (or baying) so that is likely his situation. His adoption donation includes neutering, vaccinations, implanting of a microchip, application of flea meds and worming. Gus is in foster care so please complete an application at our website (www.castawaycritters.org) before meeting him. Completing an application does not obligate you to adopt; however, it is required. Applications are processed in the order received in an effort to find the best match possible for both the dog and the adopter.

More About Bluetick Coonhound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      James

      rescue
      Breed: Dachshund-Jack Russell Terrier Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $260.00. Please contact Alice (atarnow@verizon.net) for more information about this pet. James ended up in a very high-kill pound in WV as a result of a humane seizure by animal control. He and another little dog were living in their own filth. As a result, he never learned appropriate bathroon habits, but he is learning fast. Once he's in a routine, he's fine. He is a smart little guy and is bored easily, so another dog or kids to play with would be nice. He doesn't jump as high as a JRT...his legs are too short. He doesn't hurt the cats in his foster home, but he drives them crazy barking at them to make them run so he can chase. He loves people of all sizes and thinks they should stop and say hello. He loves meeting new dogs, but they don't all like him so another dog should match his energy level. He is a nice dog to walk...he doesn't pull on the leash (unless he sees a person or other dog), and he walks right along. He is a happy, affection fellow in spite of his tough first two years. Get too close and you'll be assaulted with kisses. James does have epilepsy and will require medicine (~$30/mo) for the rest of his life to control the seizures. He has not had a seizure since his first one in February. His adoption donation includes neutering, vaccinations, implanting of a microchip, application of flea meds and worming. James is in foster care so please complete an application at our website (www.castawaycritters.org) before meeting him. Completing an application does not obligate you to adopt; however, it is required. Applications are processed in the order received in an effort to find the best match possible for both the dog and the adopter.

I'm a good boy and I go outside to do all of my business. I sleep well in the crate and I don't complain at all but I do like to be close to you and snuggle in the bed or on the couch. I'm a Chi but honestly I don't bark a whole lot. I know a lot of chi's do but I just really don't. Seems Like a waste of breath to me. I get along with all of my foster brothers and sisters. I am a friendly guy and my foster mom says I'm a love bug. I'm pretty healthy. I had a heart murmer when I came in, but after having a dental and a neuter the heart murmer is barely noticable. I am up to date on all my shots and heartworm negative. Woot !! Please consider adopting an old guy. Love , Scooby. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever. Please contact Jamie (ccjamieballa@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. Moses is a 4.5 year old pup that has a ton of energy! He loves to play with his humans. Moses is housebroken and crate trained. Moses knows what 'no' means and does not want to dissapoint. Moses would love a fenced in yard because he still has a lot of puppy energy in him. Moses does not do well with other dogs or cats. He will need to find a home that consistently works with him in training. He needs to stay busy. He is a very smart boy that likes to keep his brain active, so training is great for him! We also wouldn't recommend very young kids as he is very strong and might knock them over when playing. Moses is such a sweetheart, just reactive towards other dogs. He would make a great companion for the right person! Moese is in foster care so please complete an application before meeting him. Contessa was one of 19 dogs taken from a hoarder and dropped into a high kill WV pound. Contessa was basically hairless when arrived. Was diagnosed with Cushings and is being treated and looks awesome! just look at her photos...!!!! Her Cushings meds is not high dosage. She takes a pill every other day. Foster mom puts them in 1/2 a pill pocket and Contessa"s eyes light up. She thinks they are just wonderful treats. A box of the cushings meds cost about $60.00 which lasts her 2 months. She also has borderline dry eye. SHe only needs a drop each morning in the one eye. So a bottle lasts about 2 months. Lastly she has a heart murmer. She is a go with the flow little girl. She likes all dogs and cats, She is good with people and kids that are calm. She loves to wear clothes. Makes her feel like a Princess. She will go outside in snow or rain to potty, she is a little trooper. She is very calm and very good. She would love more than anything to have a home of her own. Bubba

      rescue
      Breed: Maltese-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Maltese / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Sarah (neiswenders@mhs-pa.org) for more information about this pet. Bubba is a sweet little guy – “IF” he likes you. He is believed to be a mix between a Terrier & Maltese (honestly, your guess is as good as ours) He is very content just snuggling up with his "person"... He gets along with dogs – if he is allowed to be the alpha dog - however, can be a bit jealous if he isn't the center of attention when other canine friends are around. Bubba is looking for a forever home... Would do best in a mature home without young children chasing him. Bubba wears a "belly band" in the house because he was never housetrained as a puppy/ young adult and he was allowed to lift his leg in the house. The belly bands work great and are low cost. He does not wear his belly band at night. He is a “territorial marker.” Bubba does come across at times as aggressive; however, Bubba does better with new people who initially ignore him when entering the house. Once he realizes you mean him no harm, he will jump up on your lap and ask for snuggles. Bubba doesn't like when people he doesn't know "coo-chee-coo" over him at first meeting... but he warms up fast if he accepts you – but we don’t let our guard down, because Bubba can become aggressive if he’s done with your attention. Bubba has been through a lot of transition in his short life – he originally came into the Castaway Critter rescue from a high kill shelter in 2011; he was with one foster until August 2013 – but then transitioned to another foster home until he found a special adopter who accepted him and all his quarks. Unfortunately, his forever momma passed away in May 2015; so Bubba came back to his foster family. Bubba has been struggling with some skin issues, but back to his healthy self now and ready to try his hand at finding a loving forever home again. Bubba loves to go for walks – he will bark at people/ cars/ other dogs/ bicycles, etc. Bubba does NOT like cats; so a home without any felines is a MUST. Bubba has been evaluated by a dog behavioralist – and noted that he is fear aggressive and a resource guarder. Experienced dog owner is a MUST. Are you Bubba's match? If so, please complete a online application at www.castawaycritters.org If interested in talking with his foster mom, please contact her directly at castawaysarah@yahoo.com
