If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Blue Lacy-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Tomball, TX
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Blue Lacy / Mixed (short coat). Thanks to an animal loving couple, Tommy and his brother, Jake were trapped and rescued when they were about 4 months old, after they were abandoned by a stray mama dog in a Tomball neighborhood. It appeared that they had never been touched by humans because they were very fearful and would run and hide in the bushes. Their foster parents opened their hearts and home to these two sweet puppies and have done a phenomenal job of bringing them out of their shells. These once abandoned pups have grown into beautiful mid sized dogs. Their foster mom thinks they must be Texas Blue Lacy mixes. Tommy is a sweet boy, curious and active. He is always alert and ready to interact. Tommy is friendly, yet shy at first with strangers. He will kennel up on command and is crate trained and only potties outside, never in his crate. He only barks when he hears or sees someone unfamiliar. Tommy enjoys going for walks on his leash. Can you open your heart and home to this handsome boy? He just needs someone to give him a chance, a special human who has the love and patience to guide him. Estimated birthdate: January 2015. Approximate weight: 30 lbs. If you would like to meet Tommy, please text or call his foster mom, Janice at - 936-207-0963.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Tomball, TX
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Golly was found on a business parking lot in the Tomball area. Apparently she was dumped; she stayed there for days, as if she was waiting for someone to come back and get her. But sadly, no one came. Golly is a friendly senior girl who still has a lot of pep in her step. She loves balls and likes to carry one around with her. She enjoys car rides and likes to sit beside you and be petted. She does not like small dogs. Unfortunately, Golly's previous owner must not have given her any heart worm preventative because she tested positive but now she has successfully completed heart worm treatment. Golly is a sweet girl and deserves to have a loving family to call her own during her senior years. Approximate birthdate: February 2008. Estimated weight: 50 lbs. If you would like to meet Golly, please call or text Stephanie at 281-622-6549.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Tomball, TX
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Bojangles was found running down the edge of Hwy. 105, wearing a thick chain tightly around his neck, dragging a smaller tie-out chain behind him. The chain around his neck was so tight, it had to be cut off. It seems that Bojangles may have had very little socialization with other dogs prior to being rescued. He craves human attention, loving to crawl into your lap and be petted. He is learning how to socialize and be appropriate with other dogs. He particularly dislikes big dogs and prefers smaller female dogs. He would probably do best in a home where he would be the only dog. However, we know that is difficult to accommodate these days so maybe one female dog would be acceptable to him. No first time dog owners, please. Bojangles will need an experienced dog owner who has the time and patience to work with him. Estimated birthdate: August 3013 Approximate weight: 18 lbs. If you would like to meet Bojangles, please call or text Stephanie at: 281-622-6549.
