More About Boston Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Male Boxer THIS DOG HAS BEHAVIOR ISSUES - ONLY EXPERIENCED PEOPLE SHOULD APPLY Adoption Donation: $50 Located : Frank is located near Sterling Forest NJ. He would need to meet potential adopters a few times before he will feel comfortable going to his new home. Adopters must live in this area. Weight: 60 lbs Age 2 years Please click the following link to watch a video of Frank: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_P0BFtEZPs Meet Frank, an energetic, friendly boy who loves to run and romp outside but instantly turns into a couch potato when he enters the house. Frank is good in a crate and totally housetrained. He is wonderful with other dogs—he just loves to play and make new friends. Frank is not aggressive however he can be protective of the women and children in the household. For this reason we would prefer a quiet environment for Frank. Frank would be ideal in a family with older children—while he is a gentle boy he is big and could knock over a small child. Frank could use some training as he likes to pull and lead the way—he could benefit from a harness. He loves to play tug of war and chew rawhides. Not at all destructive, Frank can be left alone in the house all day and he will just veg out. He would do best in a calm and peaceful environment as opposed to a busy household. Our big fella just loves to ride in the car. He sits in the back seat, sitting straight up, and doesn't even jump out when the door is opened--he waits until his foster mom puts on his leash. Frank is such a sweetie. We just love him. Please come see our gentle giant 'Frank the Gentleman.’ Frank is located near Sterling Forest NJ. Crate trained and house trained, she learned basic obedience commands from watching her foster mom train the other foster dogs. A sweet, loving dog, her favorite things are chewing on chew toys, playing with balls, and sleeping on the couch next to her foster mom. Good with dogs and cats. because of her skittish nature she needs an adult home with no children. Charlie Girl did have an incident in the past where she was put in a situation that terrified her and she reacted with a bite, but we have worked with a trainer and she has come a long way and we feel she would be a good pet with the right person in the right home. Please do call to discuss as she is really a great dog! She has come a very long way since she came into rescue, and is blossoming into a wonderful little girl. Donations would be gratefully accepted for her care Follow Callies progress on Facebook: Friends of homeless animals, inc of RI https://www.youcaring.com/friends-of-homeless-animals-inc-479518 Adoption Donation $ 399 - VET HOLD Located: KY (Transportation costs included to the Northeast , plz ask for more details ) Age: approx 1 year old Weight: 11 lbs now up to 13.5 lbs The Story By the stroke of LUCK, one of our volunteers was on the phone with a KY ACO, when a little 10lb female beagle was surrendered to the shelter. While on the phone we were asked if FOHA WANTED TO PULL HER....AFTER SEEING A PICTURE, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SHE NEEDED URGENT MEDICAL CARE and FOHA STEPPED UP FOR THIS LITTLE ANGEL ASAP! Now called Callie, her previous owner never named her, is assumed a victim of severe neglect. Little Callie's right eye was ruptured from a dog bite, her left eye was scratched, bulging and infected, her abdomen had multiple infected bite wounds. Her high fever rendered her so weak, a KY volunteer had to carry Callie into the clinic. IN SPITE OF ALL THIS TRAUMA, Callie's tail wagged and kisses were plentiful. This little angel will need multiple surgeries and constant vet care for weeks ahead. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO HELP PAY FOR CALLIE'S NEEDS. Please go to www.fohari.org and click on the donate button and say a prayer for sweet Callie. Please verify the location and readiness of this dog with us. Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Marathon, RI
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). " Not available for adoption " Health and Behavior Issues Peanut will remain with his foster family and FOHA will provide for his long term care. Please consider making a donation through Paypal to FOHA for dogs like Peanut. Located: in Rhode Island Age: 3 years old Weight: 5 lbs This little guy is Peanut! Peanut is looking much better than he did when we found him as a stray. He was living on the streets and by the look of him it was for some time. Imagine being a 4 pound dog and homeless! This poor, mistreated boy was hungry, dirty, had long nails, missing fur, and was heart worm positive. While in foster care Peanut was treated for heart worms, but unfortunately due to Peanut's size and the severity of his condition, the treatment caused damage to his heart and lungs. Peanut also was dealt a bad hand of genetics. He has a heart murmur that the vet says it may get worse as he gets older. Peanut has luxating (out of place) patellas in his back knees. Usually knees in his condition would need to be operated on, but due to the damage to his heart and lungs, he probably wouldn't make it through the surgery. Peanut is given Metacam, which is a dog NSAID, whenever he is in pain or when he is limping. Peanut also has Paraphimosis, which is also a birth defect. Paraphimosis is a condition that causes a dog to be unable to retract it's penis back in the sheath. A dog will usually have surgery for this, but this too would be too risky for him. Instead he needs it to be lubricated, if not he the tissue may dry out and become necrotic. In that case he would have to have emergency surgery. Peanut also takes seizures, which are not too bad right now, but his neurologist stated that the seizures could get worse as he gets older. Peanut also has behavioral issues, anxiety and fear biting. The only person who he trusts is his foster mom, everyone else he tries to bite, and when he does he will not back down and will break skin. Sometimes Peanut will even bite his foster mom for no reason, and then he will be looking to sit with her and want to be loved. We think he is this way because he was abused sometime in his life. Regardless the reason for his aggression, Peanut's foster family loves him. Peanut will remain with his foster family and FOHA will provide for his long term care. Adoption Donation $ 99 Located: in TX Age: approx 10 Years old Weight: 16 lbs Scotty is a sweet, loving little man who is as easy going as it gets. He absolutely loves to play with other dogs and gets along great with everyone. He is on the smaller side for a Scotty, just about 16 lbs. Like most Scotties, this boy loves his walks, tail wagging all the way. Scotty is housebroken and not a barker. Scotty does have a good sized growth under his tail. It does not bother him in the least but vets have said due to his age, it can not be removed. He is not neutered--again, due to his age it is not advisable for him to undergo surgery. Scotty also has cataracts but sees enough to get along just fine. Scotty has an endearing personality and has his quirks--with multiple dog beds to choose from, Scotty chooses to sleep on his favorite old towel, the one his foster mom uses to mop up messes! Scotty would work well in almost any kind of home, he doesn't have a drop of aggression and loves everyone he meets, four legged or two. Scotty is in an active, loving foster home in Texas but we bring our dogs up to New England every weekend. He is looking for a special adopter, one who will understand that while he does have some medical issues, he is a gentle and loving companion who desperately needs a home of his own. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Marathon, RI
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. This dog is NOT offered for adoption by Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA). This dog is solely a courtesy posting for another rescuer. Located: LI, NY Age: 7 years old Weight: 62 lbs Diamond, age 7, pit bull terrier, female, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, good with kids and dogs . Diamond is a sweet, goofy girl who has been in the Southampton Animal Shelter way too long--almost a full year. She was a loving member of a family for six years until her owner pulled out some cheese and Diamond and the other resident dog squabbled. After that, the owner simply dropped Diamond, scared, and trembling, at the shelter. Diamond has struggled at the shelter because she is so shy-- she retreats and barks when she meets someone new. And so time after time again, this gentle girl is overlooked. But given a little time to adjust Diamond is super affectionate and loving. She follows shelter workers wherever they go, gives lots of sloppy kisses and has an adorable habit of giving a kiss and retreating to her bed, essentially beckoning you to join her. Shelter workers comply and Diamond is so happy with her head on a lap, getting scratches and belly rubs. Diamond adores other dogs especially small ones! Her tail wags furiously when little ones walk by her cage. Shelter workers are so sad to see Diamond still here--she would love to be a family member again. Diamond is house trained and has excellent manners. She has no aggression--she just gets scared when meeting someone new. We would love to find a foster or adoptive home for this sweet girl. Give her just a few days to settle in and feel safe and you will be rewarded with a gentle and loving companion. Diamond is up for adoption at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Visit our website www.southamptonanimalshelter.com or call (631) 728-PETS to adopt this sweet girl! This dog is NOT offered for adoption by Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA). This dog is solely a courtesy posting for another rescuer.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Janet (janet.seago@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. Adoption Donation $ 299 Located: in MS - Local adoption in MS or as far as Burke VA. Age: approx 3 years old Weight: 15 lbs This adorable young boy was found as a stray in rural Tennessee and was almost immediately scheduled for euthanasia for one reason: he was absolutely terrified. Trembling, shaking and unable to even return a gaze, Pixel was such a pathetic sight in his cage he touched the heart of the shelter workers who saw this sweet boy's potential and called FOHA. In a moment everything changed; Pixel's life was saved. Now in an active foster home, Pixel adores romping and rolling about with his many foster brothers and sisters. He absolutely loves other dogs and is never happier than when he is playing or cuddling up with them. He will walk around the house with a tennis ball in his mouth or head through the doggie door to go out to the yard to play. But Pixel still has a ways to go with people, he is still very timid. He will brush up against his foster mom and lick her hand but if she walks toward him, he will retreat. He will rush to the door, tail wagging, when she comes home from work, but if she reaches out to pet him, he will run away. Pixel's foster mom must throws treats to him, he will not take them from her hand. But Pixel is improving every day and he is very much worth the effort--this is a quiet and easy going dog, he uses the doggie door and does his business outside, he is not at all destructive. When he was first rescued he was found to be heartworm positive but Pixel has been treated and is now healthy. What Pixel needs is a home with at least one other dog who likes to play, and a special owner who will give this little guy the time he needs to feel safe. For now, he is the perfect addition to a family looking for a friendly companion for another dog. In time, we believe he will be a loving companion for his owner as well. This sweet girl is in the care of the Jackson County Humane Society in Newport, Arkansas. We think she was born Dec. 2012 or Jan. 2013. This friendly, happy girl was found wandering on a local farm as a stray and brought to our shelter. Some idiot tried to crop her ear and it looks deformed but was healed when we got her. She is very playful, loves everybody and loves all dogs. She has a great personality! She is leash trained, mostly house trained and getting better all the time. She loves water and loves to play in the wading pool. She just needs a forever home of her own, and someone to love and cherish her. Won’t you be that someone? Posted Breed: Maltese / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Loretta (swim43lm@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. THIS DOG HAS BEHAVIOR ISSUES AND CAN BITE - ONLY EXPERIENCED PEOPLE SHOULD APPLY Adoption Donation $ 99 Located: in Rhode Island Age: 9 years young Weight: 11 lbs My name is Romeo but I respond to Buddy. I'm a low energy dog, who loves to go for walks, eat, belly rubs, car rides and lap sitting. My owner has to learn what makes me nervous as I had to learn not all humans are going to hurt me. When I'm scared, I'll try to protect myself by fear biting. I respond well to positive reinforcement and food rewards. I would do best in a low traffic home with no children. I'm a real good boy when I feel safe and secure and have made big improvements with my behavior. I think I'm around 8 yrs old, neutered, and have a left eye cataract, but I get around fine. Could you be my new, loving, patient owner? I know tricks, dance, sit, and paw; I love showing off !!!!!!!!!! I'll ask my mom to film me, so you can see how cute I am. Licks and Paws, Buddy Update: Romeo went to the vet yesterday for shots. He was a good boy with a muzzle on. He feels he is totally blind now an adds to his fear anxiety issues. His fear aggression is not an issue when necessary precautions are taken with him.
