Posted Breed: Boston Terrier. Bianca is an 13 year old, 22 pound, beautiful red and white Boston terrier. She has diabetes that was not treated prior to CAWS rescuing her, which lead to glaucoma in both eyes. Unfortunately at different times each eye was removed. Despite having diabetes and both eyes removed, Bianca is very confident, independent, sassy and spunky. Pretty sure she knows her eyes are missing, but she does not let that hinder her. Her foster home has a dog door with a ramp. Bianca knows the layout and trucks in and out very successfully. Her diabetes is totally under control now. She eats a prescription dog food and gets an insulin shot after each meal. The bag of prescription dog food and vial of insulin lasts a couple months, so diabetes is not actually any more costly than any other illness. She gets along wonderfully with the other furkids in her home, after proper introductions of course. She needs to know who is in her pack so she feels safe. She is very close to another 18 year old diabetic in the home. She grooms and cuddles with him daily. She loves to be on the couch with her buddy or humans. Bianca will do a bark if she is lost so her humans can talk to her to find her way to them. Other than that she is not very vocal. She will talk to you with muffled growls to tell you how her day is going, or if you disturbed her sleep. She is just a little ham. She does try to play with her best friend as best she can. He is so gentle with her. If Bianca is standing in the middle of a room by herself, he will stand next to her so she is not alone. Bianca walks confidently with a harness on a leash. She just needs talked to so she can follow you, or alongside another 4 legged friend. She might be a little too curious with cats so not a good idea to go to a home with cats. Due to no eyes Bianca needs to go to a home with older children. She is able to navigate a few steps but not flights of stairs. A home check is required to be sure she could function safely in the home and yard. Bianca is crate trained but does have an occasional accident if left longer than she is used to. Bianca has many good years left. She would love to find her furever family and live happily ever after. Due to her diabetes she does need to be on a schedule. Adopting Bianca is definitely a commitment, not a decision to be made without weighing the pros and cons. But diabetes does not mean hours of extra time either, just an extra minute for the insulin shot, or to be taken to the vet for glucose checks periodically. Millions or billions of humans live with this dreaded disease. We have found our 4 legged furkids live just as well as the 2 legged people. If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

More About Boston Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Chunky Monkey is looking for her soulmate. She likes to chase her tennis balls and stuffed animals around the backyard and would love to find someone who loves to play. But she also likes to curl up on the couch and watch a movie while having her head pet. Chunky Monkey is a sensitive young dog and is still learning some of the basics. She is kenneled trained but is still working on house breaking. She spent her first two years being an outside dog and is still learning the ropes of being a companion. Chunky Monkey is currently working on sit and lay down. She is eager to please. She does mostly fine with dogs and likes to chase cats in a playful way. She would be best in a house with older children as she doesn't know her own strength and is possessive with her toys and bones. She also was badly bred and will eventually have hip issues down the road. If you are looking for a friend to accompany you on walks or cuddle up on the couch, look no further. Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Hi, I’m Blu and I am 12 years old. I’m a long-legged 8-pound shiny black male Chi. I’m very sweet, but need a little time to feel totally safe with you. I do love to be gently scratched on the back of my neck and will tap you with my foot for a rub. I love my human(s) so very much! I’m generally very protective of my home, so when you have workmen there, just pick me up and hold me so that I know you are in charge (not me). I am a very confident boy and am fine with weather-related sounds. Even though I don’t have many teeth (only 3 molars on the bottom), I still a good eater and like dry food with a little water added. For my perfect family, I need to be in a quieter household. I’d be great as an “only” dog or with other CALM dog(s). I’m completely house trained and crate trained. I currently sleep in my foster mom’s bed at night, but am in no way a bed hog. I’m still very spry (and playful), but I will need stairs or a cube to get on/off your bed. I don’t bark in the yard, but I do alert bark at the evil postman or whoever comes knocking (again, just pick me up)! I can live anywhere; I will just need to learn to do my business on a leash if you don’t have a fenced yard. And by the way, I have very nice leash manners. In the spirit of transparency, I do have a Level 4 heart murmur. It really doesn’t bother me. CAWS had an ultra-sound done and test results showed that my heart is still strong and I’m as adoptable as any other dog. I just recently started taking daily doses of inexpensive heart medication to ensure my heart remains strong. Won’t you overlook this small medical condition and pick me? I am a sweet older gentleman, with a huge personality, looking for my very own calm family to watch over. Odin is blind and diabetic. He takes insulin and gets eye drops twice a day which he takes like a champ. His blindness isn't a problem as once he gets the lay of the house he moves around very well. Odin isn't really potty trained in his old age. He wears a diaper or belly band most of the time. If let outside frequently he will go to the bathroom out there most of the time. He has an adorable bark and gets very excited when you get home. Odin gets along great with the other dogs and cats in the home. Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Kemp, aka "Cheewoowoo" is a 6 year old Chihuahua who loves his people. He loves to squish next to them and snuggle. He even wraps his neck across them to show how much he cares. Cheewoowoo is a happy little guy that loves to go for walks and rides in the car. He's a pretty good walker, and walks daily with his foster family. He has no problem keeping up. Cheewoowoo is very vocal and growls sometimes. He even does it when he's getting a head rub. He can get a bit crabby though so young children are best off not around him.... although he does not dislike them. He has an eleven year old human foster sister that he absolutely adores. He sits next to her and sleeps in her bed. At night he pulls a blanket over himself and drifts off to sleep. Cats are a little too interesting to him so he needs a home without them. Kemp is fine with other dogs, but since he's so people oriented, he doesn't need a dog brother or sister. Kemp will be your best friend for life, give you daily hugs, and keep you company:) If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at http://caws.org/html/adoption_application.html

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Meet Mr. Bean, your typical, uncivilized (yet strangely charming), Royal Chihuahua! Bean is 5 years old and weighs 6 pounds. Bean is looking for a calm and quiet home with minimal to no traffic. He thinks other dogs (big and small) are quite the bother and would prefer to banish them from his existence. He is very much a ladies man and will go to the ends of the earth to protect his precious maiden. Once he has the preferred Bean-defined time to learn the love language of his person he is fiercely loyal! He asks this of his potential adopter- Do you have a quiet palace where he can reside undisturbed and peacefully? Will he be the ONLY apple of your eye? Due to his royal status he will require time to become comfortable with sharing space, will you have the patience? (Bean has likely been an only dog in his past home and has not had much if any socialization. He prefers women over men and does not enjoy other dogs. He will need a quiet place, with extra time to warm up and adjust, where there is minimal or no people traffic. No children and preferably someone who is home most of the day. He is a special dog who will need a special home. Would that happen to be you and your home?) Thank you for considering a rescue dog! *Dogs are not placed on a first come first serve basis.
