Posted Breed: Boston Terrier. Bianca is an 10.5 year old beautiful red and white Boston terrier. She has diabetes that was not treated prior to CAWS rescuing her, which lead to glaucoma in both eyes. Unfortunately at different times each eye was removed. Despite having diabetes and both eyes removed, Bianca is very confident, independent, sassy and spunky. Pretty sure she knows her eyes are missing, but she does not let that hinder her. Her foster home has a dog door with a ramp. Bianca knows the layout and trucks in and out very successfully. Her diabetes is totally under control now. She eats a prescription dog food and gets an insulin shot after each meal. The bag of prescription dog food and vial of insulin lasts a couple months, so diabetes is not actually any more costly than any other illness. She gets along wonderfully with the other furkids in her home, after proper introductions of course. She needs to know who is in her pack so she feels safe. She is very close to another 18 year old diabetic in the home. She grooms and cuddles with him daily. She loves to be on the couch with her buddy or humans. Bianca will do a bark if she is lost so her humans can talk to her to find her way to them. Other than that she is not very vocal. She will talk to you with muffled growls to tell you how her day is going, or if you disturbed her sleep. She is just a little ham. She does try to play with her best friend as best she can. He is so gentle with her. If Bianca is standing in the middle of a room by herself, he will stand next to her so she is not alone. Bianca walks confidently with a harness on a leash. She just needs talked to so she can follow you, or alongside another 4 legged friend. She might be a little too curious with cats so not a good idea to go to a home with cats. Due to no eyes Bianca needs to go to a home with older children. She is able to navigate a few steps but not flights of stairs. A home check is required to be sure she could function safely in the home and yard. Bianca is crate trained but does have an occasional accident if left longer than she is used to. Bianca has many good years left. She would love to find her furever family and live happily ever after. Due to her diabetes she does need to be on a schedule. Adopting Bianca is definitely a commitment, not a decision to be made without weighing the pros and cons. But diabetes does not mean hours of extra time either, just an extra minute for the insulin shot, or to be taken to the vet for glucose checks periodically. Millions or billions of humans live with this dreaded disease. We have found our 4 legged furkids live just as well as the 2 legged people. If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

More About Boston Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Hi, I’m Blu and I am 10 years young! I’m a 7-pound black male Chinese Crested (or Xoloitzcuintli) Chihuahua cross. I have the most unusual coat. It is so shiny, very soft and fine, with little or no hair on my underbelly, the inside of my legs, and around my eyes, forehead, and ears. Besides being incredibly handsome, I love my person! I’m very sweet and calm, but will need a little time to feel totally safe with you. Give me space in the beginning and you will see my true self emerge. Before long, you’ll see that I need to be in the same room as you and will wake up in the middle of the night to follow you into the kitchen or even the bathroom. I do love to be gently rubbed around the face and neck. Sometimes I’ll tap you with my foot and put my head down to make it easy for you to scratch my neck. I’m OK with strangers, but just pick me up and hold me so that I know you are in charge (and not me). I am actually a very confident boy. I’m fine with weather-related sounds such as lighting, thunder and wind, as well as the broom, mop, and vacuum. I will admit that sometimes I just get tired of holding my tongue in because I have no teeth on the top of my mouth and only a few left on the bottom. Even though I only have a couple of teeth, I can still eat dry food (small size); just add a little water to wet it. For my perfect family, I’d be happy with any family where all members are kind and loving to me. Small children would not be good for me because they are so unpredictable, but older respectful children might be fine. I don’t have to be an “only” dog, as I presently live with a gentle Lab and a senior Jack Russell/Chi in my foster home and we all do great. But these dogs are calm and they don’t expect me to play with them! So I guess I’m saying that I’d be OK as an “only” dog, but can co-exist with your other CALM respectful dog(s). If you’re looking for a playmate for your other fur-baby, I’m not your guy! I have been called the “fun police” because I charge and growl at younger dogs horsing around. I’m completely house trained and crate trained. I like a wire crate so that I can see what’s going on. I can be trusted in the house when you’re gone with or without being crated as I don’t have separation anxiety. Also, I am great riding in the car, but I do like to ride shotgun so I can make sure you’re driving safely. I would love to sleep in bed with you (outside the covers), but burrowed in my own blanket. I am still pretty spry, but stairs or a cube would be helpful to jump on your bed. I don’t bark in the yard, but I do alert bark at the evil postman or whoever rings the dreaded doorbell! I will bark at strangers, unless you pick me up and hold me. So if you live in an apartment, I could easily adapt; however, I’d need to learn to do my business on a leash. And by the way, I have very nice leash manners. In the spirit of transparency, I do have a Level 4 heart murmur. It really doesn’t bother me. CAWS had an ultra-sound done recently to check on my heart just to ensure I didn’t need any medication. Test results showed that my heart is strong and I’m as adoptable as any other dog. At some point (years down the road) I might need inexpensive medication for my heart, but certainly not now. The doc says that I will need regular check-ups, just to keep an eye on my condition. So really all you would need to do special if you adopt me is to ensure that I don’t get too over-heated, which means during the summer our walks would be best in the early morning or later in the evening when it is cooler. Won’t you overlook this small medical condition and pick me? I am a gentle, sweet, calm older gentleman; I’m just looking for my very own family to watch over.If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua / Mixed. Tootsie is a tall, slender, 7 to 8 lb. chihuahua mix. Between this girl's intelligence and her sleek frame, she is quite a Houdini at getting in and out of everything. She will need to go to a home with a fenced yard to roam around in. When she first came to us, Tootsie was a very frightened little girl, but the world is quickly opening up to her. She does very well with other dogs who are gentle and calm, and the dogs in her foster home are helping to show her the ropes. She is learning to run and play with the pack as she becomes more and more comfortable in her surroundings. She is also working on her house breaking skills, and with her smarts, she's picking up on everything faster than the average pooch. She would do best in a home without small children, as she doesn't care for fast movements or commotion. Tootsie is very shy and timid, so she will need someone who is willing to be patient with her and let her warm up slowly. Once she knows she is in a safe place, she is nothing but sweetness and affection. Tootsie's a lover not a barker, and she displays perfect manners when being carried around by her foster parents in public. Right now, the world is her oyster, and she's enjoying all of the new experiences it has to offer. All she needs is a loving owner to take her paws and be her guide. If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

      Breed: Shih Tzu
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Chewy is a darling Shih Tzu looking for a quiet, adult family home, who will be home most of the time to give him love, care and attention. Chewy is a quiet, sweet, very well behaved and happy little boy, with lots of tail wags. He loves to follow and be with his foster mom where ever she is around the house, other than that, he is not real active. He likes choosing one of the comfy dog beds to snuggle in most the day. Chewy is basically house trained, though he may have an accident first thing in the morning from sleeping if he’s not let out right away or then again right after, only if he’s not let out immediately after he’s eaten his breakfast. He must be given the opportunity to go out often to avoid accidents throughout the day and evening to avoid any accidents. When this is done, he doesn’t have accidents. A secure, fenced yard is a must for Chewy since he sometimes will explore or wander, and given the opportunity, will wander off if there is an escape route unsecured. He wants his foster mom to go out and be with him when he goes out to the bathroom. When he's finished, he usually will come right back in with her. He should never be left outside in the yard alone since things in the yard can irritate his eyes. Chewy is fine with the sr. cat and other small dogs at his foster mom's who don't bother him since he is very shy. Chewy gets very excited about his special food he eats for breakfast and dinner, prances around and can hardly wait for his food bowl to be put down. Chewy has special eye drops that must be put in his eyes twice a day to continue to keep both of his eyes healthy for the rest of his life. He knows he will a special treat right after getting the eye drops, therefore he’s good about getting them. The area around his eyes must be carefully wiped with a clean, wet, warm wash cloth to keep the area clear and clean daily. Since Chewy is a Shih Tzu, a regular 6-8 week grooming schedule is a must, and the hair kept trimmed away from his eyes regularly. The Vet noticed that Chewy's heart has an extra beat and that his heart beats a little slower, so he should not do any strenuous or high activity. Chewy is neutered, healthy, happy, chipped and up to date on all of his shots and is ready for his loving, forever, perfect, adult home.If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Australian Shepherd / Mixed. Shy Eddy may not have had the most rewarding beginning. It is hard for him to trust, and consequently he can be very shy and scared. He has had to learn how to defend himself against the world and now needs someone to help him learn to trust again. He puts on a brave face at first, but that is not the real Eddy – he is actually terrified that someone might hurt him, so he keeps them at a distance. Eddy is quite the ladies man! Go ahead and play a little hard to get and he will be intrigued! He may even try to crawl into your lap to give you kisses! Guys arent nearly as much fun for this shy guy – he finds them to be rather intimidating and scary. Once he knows you, he is an amazing little friend! When he is comfortable he loves to chase toys, sniff things, and be like every other dog. Eddy would love to be in a nice mellow home where he can relax. Relaxing is almost as important as playing for this guys well being! He needs to know that he is safe and that he has a confident and quiet leader to help him see that the world isnt such a bad place and that people can be fun!If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

He thinks other dogs (big and small) are quite the bother and would prefer to banish them from his existence. He is very much a ladies man and will go to the ends of the earth to protect his precious maiden. Once he has the preferred Bean-defined time to learn the love language of his person he is fiercely loyal! He asks this of his potential adopter- Do you have a quiet palace where he can reside undisturbed and peacefully? Will he be the ONLY apple of your eye? Due to his royal status he will require time to become comfortable with sharing space, will you have the patience? (Bean has likely been an only dog in his past home and has not had much if any socialization. He prefers women over men and does not enjoy other dogs. He will need a quiet place, with extra time to warm up and adjust, where there is minimal or no people traffic. No children and preferably someone who is home most of the day. He is a special dog who will need a special home. Would that happen to be you and your home? To be considered, please complete our adoption application online at caws.org. He is fixed, microchipped and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $150.) He is a great cuddler & would love to keep your feet warm, while of course sleeping on the bed with you! He is currently living with other dogs & a cat, he maybe or may not admit his love for the cat. He can be trusted at home, he is potty trained & is not destructive. He did have a mass when CAWS pulled him from the shelter, it was on his abdomen & when removed it weighed in at 8 lbs! The good news it was not cancer, just a fatty mass, he does have a few small ones on his body, none of which seem to bother him. Recently it was determined by ultrasound that Ax has an enlarged heart, but you certainly never know, he isn't on any medications & it doesn't seem to slow him down. If you are looking for a loyal companion that will be your shadow & best friend, Ax is your man!If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

I am really enjoying living in a home and I am learning a lot of new things. I am very easy going and love to play with toys, chase a Frisbee and wrestle with the other dogs in my foster home. I get along with dogs of all sizes and I am curious about cats! I like to watch them but if they get to close I run away. My favorite thing to do is cuddle on my humans lap and watch T.V. (he is mesmerized by the T.V.) I love to be as close to my humans as I can! I am currently working on potty training, crate training and basic obedience which will need to be continued in my new home. Posted Breed: German Wirehaired Pointer / Boxer / Mixed. Xander is an adorable Heinz 57 dog. He is a mixed with some serious cuteness and is a lovable goofball. Xander LOVES people. He is a true people dog. He loves to snuggle and loves being anywhere his humans are. He is completely potty trained. He can also be totally trusted to be left in the house unattended and has never been destructive. He loves to go for walks, but he needs someone willing to continue to work with him on his leash manners and leash training. He's making progress, but still needs work. He can get quite anxious and nervous in new situations or in areas where there is a lot going on and he needs a home that is willing to work with him through some of his anxieties. He loves to play with toys and run in the yard. Xander currently lives with 4 other dogs and would love a home where he can have another playful dog as a buddy and playmate. He would do best in a home with no kids or older kids, as he does dart through open doors and has been known to take himself on little field trips around the neighborhood if given the chance to escape through the front door. Xander is a smart boy, and he needs a secure yard where he will not be left unattended. If given enough time alone, Xander will figure out how to escape from most fences. He particularly knows how to climb a chain link fence or get through a wooden fence if given the opportunity and is not being watched. A home with a tall vinyl fence would be ideal for him, and the yard must be secure. Even at his age, Xander has a lot of energy and needs a home that will keep him active with daily walks, runs, and/or play time with a canine buddy. Xander is very good in the house and is generally pretty quiet, but can be a bit barky when the doorbell rings. He has a great "off" switch and loves to snuggle with his people whenever possible. Xander must be in a home with NO cats! He finds them way too tempting to not chase them and try to get them. Xander is a happy, go-lucky, cheerful dog and he has such a sweet, gentle nature to him. He's one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet and is waiting patiently for his perfect forever home! Xander goes to Train Walk Poop & for daycare & training & he does great! If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Wanda is a precious and sweet 12 pound tan Chihuahua mix. She definitely thinks she is a princess, so she is, sassy and spunky. It took a few months for the shelter to realize she was diabetic, so when confirmed they asked CAWS to rescue her. It only took Wanda a few days to learn the dog door. She is totally house trained now. She will have a pee accident in her crate if left too long, but never a poo accident. We are currently working to get her insulin dose regulated but she is eating great and on her way to having her diabetes stabilized. She gets an insulin shot in the morning and at night after eating. She is very good to just stand there and let her foster mommy give her a shot. The first few days she did not want to eat at all, which is never a good thing with diabetes, you have to eat to get an insulin shot. That was very scary but we got past that, whew. Diabetes is very manageable and not too expensive. Wanda has two other fur siblings in her foster home with diabetes too, one 17.5 and the other probably 10. They can live to long ripe old ages if taken care of properly. There is a prescription dog food they eat as well. The insulin we use is purchased over the counter without a prescription so not expensive at all. Wanda gets along with the other furkids in her home, big and small, male and female. She will give a little growl if she is on her human lap and one of them try to get in her way. There is no biting or blood though, just a little princess thing. She is new to the pack so trying to figure her pecking order. She currently takes treats a little rough, might get your finger with the treat. We are working on that. Wanda needs to go to a home with older or no children. When Wanda is excited she prances with her front paws in the air and it looks like she is almost clapping. We have not seen her play with toys yet or engage in play with the other dogs, but that could come with time. It has only been a couple weeks since she was diagnosed with diabetes so she is becoming a new dog every day. She is content to sleep with her humans or in a dog bed on the floor. Wanda is a unique, sweet little girl with tons of kisses and love to give, looking for her furever family. She waddles when she walks with a tail that never stops wagging. If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.
