Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. ***Courtesy Listing*** Meet Charger, a lab/boxer who is looking for a home! This sweet boy has not had the best beginning and needs a loving and dedicated owner to patiently help him overcome his fears. He continues to demonstrate improvements with his training program. He is so eager to please and quite intelligent. He can demonstrate reactive behavior on leash/walks when fearful. Due to his behavioral issues in the past, it is important for him to be with someone who is willing to continue the training that we have started with a behavioralist so he can continue to grow. The trainer is confident that with consistency and confidence, Charger will make a great addition! He is a sweet and loving boy, but is nervous about the outside world. He did not receive normal socialization in his younger days and struggles with his confidence. Within his home, he loves to play with lots of toys and is extremely loving. He will stick by your side at all times! He loves to play and strives to please at all times! He plays with his foster dogs but is overly excited and is being taught proper dog etiquette. He doesn't realize that he is 50 lbs! He is crate trained, potty trained and currently learning the ropes to living in the human world! His foster family continues to diligently work on giving him the foundation to address his issues. They adore him and can't wait to see him happy in his permanent home! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: San Diego, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Rusty was owner relinquished from a family who found him when he was a young teenager roaming the streets of San Diego. We were shocked to hear poor Rusty had been living isolated and alone in the back yard for almost his whole life. Because his previous owner was elderly, she could not go outside to feed him and depended on others to do so. Rusty is currently living with a wonderful foster family and he has adjusted extremely well! Here is what his foster mother has to say about him: “Rusty has totally come out of his shell and is great with anyone he meets. He is excellent in his crate at night – in fact, I even have to pull him out in the morning. He is great with other dogs of all sizes, as well as cats, and even chickens! Rusty is good on a leash and in the car. He has learned to enjoy couches and cuddles and seem very content. He is an older guy who is really calm, except for right after a bath when he zooms around like a crazy dog (he is not too fond of getting a bath).” Won’t you consider giving this senior boy the love he needs? He deserves to enjoy the many years he has left, full of companionship, love, and peace of mind. If you are interested in adopting this handsome guy, please fill out an online application right away. JJ

      rescue
      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: San Diego, CA
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet JJ! Despite his rough start in life, JJ is the poster boy for "gentle giant": he is a really sweet boy who just wants to love and be loved. JJ was rescued at the end of December, 2015, by the Border Patrol while walking in an isolated area near the USA border; he was quite emaciated when he arrived, and the healed scars on his muzzle still tell the story of how hard he had to fend for himself in order to survive as a stray. While JJ is shy and initially hesitant to appoach strangers, he turns into a big, placid teddy bear who is all about love and snuggles as soon as he warms up to you He loves squeaky toys and he will gently pick them from your hand and happily trot away to his bed holding them; he will also greet you with his toy. He craves back and ear rubs, can spend half an hour with his chin resting on your lap while you pet him, and he will even nudge your hand with his paw or nose to ask for more when you stop JJ currently lives in a temporary foster home with 5 other dogs (2 Chi mix girls who boss him around and 2 med/lg breed male dogs) and he is really good with them as long as they are not trying to be bossy with him. He did stand his ground on the rare occasion when one of his foster siblings tried to take his food or toys, but he never displayed any sort of aggression towards any of them at any point. JJ is not properly socialized to cats and should not be in a home where there are cats. We feel that JJ would do better in a househould without small children who might startle him with brisk movements or high-pitched screams. He would, however, most probably be great with older children (10-12 years old and over) who are provided with adequate guidance on how to approach and interact with him. This sweet boy is in need of a foster home or adoptive family The ideal home for JJ would be: Someone who would like to have just one canine companion or has non dominant dogs who will try to challenge him. He likely would do best with non treatening dogs like smaller dogs, BUT has been living in 2 foster homes since we rescued him and there always have been multiple dogs in the home. A family without cats. A family who just would like a "home dog' not a dog beach or dog park dog as that is not something JJ would enjoy. A ranch or large property he can have as his own would be amazing but he enjoys a normal yard just as much. Perhaps a retiree or adult couple looking for that canine companionship of a goofy, loving but chilled dog. JJ is walked daily, but still is a little hesitant or afraid of leashes or exposure to things like going to run errands, although he jumps well into the truck/car. He sleeps in his crate at night and is house trained. His foster family consists of mom, dad and a teen. He does not have separation anxiety. If you are interested in fostering this gentle giant until he is adopted or, even better, would like to foster him with the intention of potentially adopting him should he be the right dog for you after having him home for a few weeks/months, please fill out an application online. He will certainly bring some sunshine into your lives. Check out his videos and pictures as he is playing with different breeds and sizes of foster dogs. Location: San Diego, CA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Spitz (long coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet Oso! Sweet Oso was relinquished by his mom in San Diego. She had had him ever since he was a puppy but, sadly, was unemployed for almost 2 years and now that she found a job, it required a lot of travel time from her. Because of this, Oso had been left boarding often and, since it was not fair to him, she did what was best for him, knowing that her work was requiring a lot more travel than she had thought. Oso is house broken, crate trained and loves others dogs and people/children alike. He is not a small pomeranian, but a good small to medium size at 20 pounds. He is healthy, UTD on medical, and just had a dental. His new family will need to be aware he has grooming requirements and, as a young senior, he will need yearly vet visits to make sure that all is well. An ideal family for Oso is someone who is retired and has time to enjoy this sweet senior pup or a family who enjoys and has time for him. Nothing would make Oso happier than to be able to go home with a forever family and to share all of the love he has to offer. To meet Oso, please submit a dog adoption application today! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet Sadie! UPDATE 6/20/16 Sadie had her FHO surgery on her Left hind leg on 5/28 and did very well. She had her sutures removed on 6/12 and is doing well. We are looking to have her go under physical therapy to help give her the possible recovery. We are not sure that she will need her Right hind leg amputated and we believe she will benefit from waiting on that surgery until she is an older dog. However, she is not going to be the dog for someone looking for a hiking or running partner. We prefer an adopter with a SINGLE STORY home so Sadie can avoid stairs, thinking of her future when she is an older/senior dog. She is currently recovering from her FHO surgery and IDEALLY she is not being adopted until end of July. Anyone interested in meeting her needs to submit a dog adoption application online to schedule a meet up with the foster family as she will not attend adoption events until end of July. Sadie is a very sweet and gentle soul and she has an excellent personality. She gets along well with people, children, and other animals. She is happy and playful and seems to enjoy life! We hope that she will find an adopter who can look past her limitations and realize that she will not be a dog park kind or dog, and that she may end up being a 3-legged dog. She will need to engage in more mellow activities because of her prior injuries. Sadie has a lot of love to give and would like nothing more than to find her forever home! Won’t you give her the love she deserves? If you are interested in adopting this beautiful girl, please fill out an online application right away. Don’t wait! Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Looking to adopt a senior pup? We would love to suggest sweet Lulu! Lulu is a small breed miniature poodle appricot color who seems to be a pure breed. She ended up at a local san diego shelter with horrible matts 50% under weight and flea infested. Her skin is healing up from the damage the fleas did but she will have amazing coat soon enough. She does have BILATER CATARACTS. When ARWOB exited this red listed/euthanasia listed senior girl, we decided to take her to the specialist. An opthalmologist did find she has bilater cataracts and 'legally' blind. Aside from that, she has no other eye issues which is GREAT! Now, as a rescue group, we are unable to spend 4K for her cataracts to be removed (she would need testing to make sure her retinas are still intact and that cost is about $600. If they are good, then the bilateral surgery would be $3500).We know eye sight is just part of aging and she is doing it gracefully even with all that has happened to her in her past, as well as ending up abandoned and unspayed! at the shelter. We just know she had a rough life, but she is full of spunk and life and,to the surprise of her foster parent, THE FIRST day she arrived at her home in the yard during daylight, this little girl (tallish legs though) was up and down the stairs WITHOUT problems at all! It was a HUGE SURPRISE to see her owning that yard without ever being there and just being classified as "legally" blind! She absolutely sees shadows, has great hearing and stamina, and she loves to join in the family and be part of whatever is going on. She loves to sleep, of course, and she would love to be someone's lap dog to enjoy the rest of her days in the safety and warmth of a loving home who will see all the years she still has left over to be a fantastic companion. Mayka was rescued from the streets of Mexico back in April when she was very pregnant with a litter of pups. She gave birth to four lovely puppies (Isabella, Phineas, Ferb, and Baljeet). She was taken in by a lovely foster family shortly after giving birth to her babies. Mayka is a loving, friendly, and docile little gal that gets along well with other dogs. She tolerates cats, but is not super friendly with them. She is learning to walk on a leash and continues to gain more confidence in being an indoor dog. She tends to be somewhat of an escape artist, but we are hopeful that in time she will become comfortable with her surroundings and settle in nicely. Presently, Mayka is being boarded because her former foster mom took in a new family of small puppies. We are hoping to find an immediate foster family for her in the meantime.
