Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. ***Courtesy Listing*** Meet Charger, a lab/boxer who is looking for a home! This sweet boy has not had the best beginning and needs a loving and dedicated owner to patiently help him overcome his fears. He continues to demonstrate improvements with his training program. He is so eager to please and quite intelligent. He can demonstrate reactive behavior on leash/walks when fearful. Due to his behavioral issues in the past, it is important for him to be with someone who is willing to continue the training that we have started with a behavioralist so he can continue to grow. The trainer is confident that with consistency and confidence, Charger will make a great addition! He is a sweet and loving boy, but is nervous about the outside world. He did not receive normal socialization in his younger days and struggles with his confidence. Within his home, he loves to play with lots of toys and is extremely loving. He will stick by your side at all times! He loves to play and strives to please at all times! He plays with his foster dogs but is overly excited and is being taught proper dog etiquette. He doesn't realize that he is 50 lbs! He is crate trained, potty trained and currently learning the ropes to living in the human world! His foster family continues to diligently work on giving him the foundation to address his issues. They adore him and can't wait to see him happy in his permanent home! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Border Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: San Diego, CA
Posted Breed: Border Terrier / Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet Trudie! She and 2 other dogs were relinquished at a local SD shelter. The 3 were under socialized, but sweet. She is a little nervous and not very confident, YET. But, in the right environment, she opens up quickly! She does well with dogs and so far, cats as well. Once she trusts someone, she seeks attention and love from them. She does well in the car and on leash, and is crate trained. Trudie is a very smart dog and well behaved, but still needs guidance from humans especially regarding trust issues. She seems to trust women more than she does men, although she does well with men she knows. Realistically, there are certain people who she doesn't trust and takes longer to warm up to. Because of this, the ideal home is a family with no young children, although teens would be fine, and adults who are dog experienced and can understand when a dog is intimidated and doesn't want to be approached. This will help in the future when Trudie is out in settings surrounded by strangers, but also for her first couple of weeks in a new home and while getting to know each other. She LOVES her people, she loves belly rubs, she loves to gently paw at you with her adorable paws, and is a very gentle girl with small tiny licks on your arm showing how much she enjoys time with you on the sofa or even going on car rides. If you have a large family, roomates, or a hectic home, it will take a while for Trudie to get used to it, but she will with the right help of someone assuring her she is ok and making sure people around her know to give her spcae. For some reasons people always want to touch Trudie even when she is not ready to allow that approach and, hence, the dog savvy adopter is preferred. She is great in her crate and can rest comfortably and quietly, but she also is a great hiking or running partner and dog park girl. She would do well in outtings like dog cafes ONLY if her adopter is vigilant and understands she is not an "in your face dog". When she meets people, she is NOT automatically going to be happy and interested in new people and people should not expect to just approach her with sudden movements if she is exhibiting being uncomfortable around them. You need to read her body language to know if she is ok with that stranger or not. If you are interested in this sweet girl, please file an application online. Posted Breed: Irish Wolfhound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet Cheff and Smidge (friends of the puppy "Troll family") **Attention - Smidge LOOKS irish wolfhound BUT she is much, much smaller and a complete stray so we have NO idea if she has that breed, we go by her PHYSICAL looks. Update as of 1/7/17 - Chef and smidge were separated as they are undesocialized and were not bonding with people. Once they were separated ARWOB worked first with Chef who was thankfuly adopted by a wonderful family during Christmas who was looking for his type of personality someone they could help and work with. Chef was a very timid dog who would shiver and act afraid of people or around people. However, he never tried to nip or bite anyone and was very gentle submissive and calm. He loves other dogs and did great with cats. Smidge is currently with her original rescuer family in Mexicali as too much change had happened and want to make sure we have a foster family who can work with her before we make arrangements for transport to San Diego. The foster in Mexicali reports she too had a hard time adjusting once chef and her were separated. Currently they do not have other dogs in the home so that could be part of the changes. Smidge is also a gentle yet playful girl who is also timid and insecure around people but does seek attention from her current foster family. At this time we are hoping to get smidge to san diego soon in mid january to get more information about her personality. If you like to adopt or foster Smidge please, submit an application TODAY! Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Meet JJ! Despite his rough start in life, JJ is the poster boy for "gentle giant": he is a really sweet boy who just wants to love and be loved. JJ was rescued at the end of December, 2015, by the Border Patrol while walking in an isolated area near the USA border; he was quite emaciated when he arrived, and the healed scars on his muzzle still tell the story of how hard he had to fend for himself in order to survive as a stray. While JJ is shy and initially hesitant to appoach strangers, he turns into a big, placid teddy bear who is all about love and snuggles as soon as he warms up to you He loves squeaky toys and he will gently pick them from your hand and happily trot away to his bed holding them; he will also greet you with his toy. He craves back and ear rubs, can spend half an hour with his chin resting on your lap while you pet him, and he will even nudge your hand with his paw or nose to ask for more when you stop JJ currently lives in a temporary foster home with 5 other dogs (2 Chi mix girls who boss him around and 2 med/lg breed male dogs) and he is really good with them as long as they are not trying to be bossy with him. He did stand his ground on the rare occasion when one of his foster siblings tried to take his food or toys, but he never displayed any sort of aggression towards any of them at any point. JJ is not properly socialized to cats and should not be in a home where there are cats. We feel that JJ would do better in a househould without small children who might startle him with brisk movements or high-pitched screams. He would, however, most probably be great with older children (10-12 years old and over) who are provided with adequate guidance on how to approach and interact with him. This sweet boy is in need of a foster home or adoptive family The ideal home for JJ would be: Someone who would like to have just one canine companion or has non dominant dogs who will try to challenge him. He likely would do best with non treatening dogs like smaller dogs, BUT has been living in 2 foster homes since we rescued him and there always have been multiple dogs in the home. A family without cats. A family who just would like a "home dog' not a dog beach or dog park dog as that is not something JJ would enjoy. A ranch or large property he can have as his own would be amazing but he enjoys a normal yard just as much. Perhaps a retiree or adult couple looking for that canine companionship of a goofy, loving but chilled dog. JJ is walked daily, but still is a little hesitant or afraid of leashes or exposure to things like going to run errands, although he jumps well into the truck/car. He sleeps in his crate at night and is house trained. His foster family consists of mom, dad and a teen. He does not have separation anxiety. If you are interested in fostering this gentle giant until he is adopted or, even better, would like to foster him with the intention of potentially adopting him should he be the right dog for you after having him home for a few weeks/months, please fill out an application online. He will certainly bring some sunshine into your lives. Check out his videos and pictures as he is playing with different breeds and sizes of foster dogs. These 3 adorable little girls came to a local SD Shelter and in need of being exited because of their age and medical condition. We are not sure if Blossom is an actual sister as she is smaller and slightly different but we think she could be a sibling since they arrived together. They had sarcoptic mange (infectious skin mites) but they are all healed and will be ready for adoption in early December. For now, if you would like to meet them, please submit a dog adoption application online. Once reviewed and hopefully approved, their foster mom will contact you to answer any questions you have about them. Their foster mom has done a great job with them and they are thriving and learning to use their pee pads like little champs! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Please review our Adoption Process before filling out an application. Update as of 11/30/16 Sadie's foster mom has this to say about her: "Sadie has been with us since late May of this year. She was found by a wonderful border patrol agent near the border after she had been hit by a car and left for dead. Both of Sadie’s knees had been broken as well as both hips and part of her back. According to the surgeon, she must have survived in that state for at least a couple of weeks based his findings in her X-rays upon arrival at his office. A lesser dog would not have survived. Sadie is a fighter. In intense pain she still managed to get enough food and water to live until she was rescued. Even in her compromised state she was gentle and sweet licking the hands of her rescuers. Memorial Day weekend she was pieced back together by a team of people that are experts in their field. She spent a couple of weeks recovering in our home on a soft dog bed at my feet while I worked from home. In all her pain from her injuries and after surgery...she remained pleasant and grateful. One thing about Sadie that I will never forget...I am left to presume that after being left to die, she must have spent a good deal of her time hungry and thirsty. To this day, every time she gets fed, she doesn’t scarf it down. She doesn’t beg at the table. She doesn’t fight with her foster sister for space at the food bowl. Instead...every single time...she stops and looks at me with eyes of thankfulness. When she was first recovering from her surgery, I would put her food in front of her on her bed...she would look me right in the eye and often lick my hand as sort of a doggy “thank you.” The surgery was a success...her left leg was damaged beyond repair and may one day need to be addressed. The right hip was mended and after several hydro therapy sessions she is able to walk, run a bit...more typically she has a cute little skip she does to get around the house. At first, due to her compromised body, it was kind of nice knowing that she wouldn’t have to be trained to stay off the furniture or not hop onto the bed. Well...much to our delight and chagrin...as she continues to get stronger and stronger...her ability to maneuver around the house like a “normal” dog improves. She sleeps with us on the bed with the help of a small set of stairs that the neighbor made for her. Sadie needs some help getting into the car, but can jump out on her own. Sadie isn’t a “cuddling” kind of dog. She shows her affection by sitting on you. If you sit on the floor...ever...expect some company. She loves to chew on bones and needs a good assortment of toys and chew toys on hand at all times. Sadie loves to lay out in the sun. My guess is the sun warms her sometimes sore body. And lets not forget her love for tennis balls. Nearly every day, we spend several minutes tossing the ball for her and having her bring it back to deny our taking it from her. Its all part of the game. She has the soul of a puppy and needs daily exercise with limits. Her body will never be “normal”...my son teases her that she skipped “leg day” at the gym...but her heart is huge, her mind is sharp. Her special needs pale in comparison to what she would add to the right forever home." We prefer an adopter with a SINGLE STORY home so Sadie can avoid stairs, thinking of her future when she is an older/senior dog. Sadie is a very sweet and gentle soul and she has an excellent personality. She gets along well with people, children, and other animals. She is happy and playful and seems to enjoy life! We hope that she will find an adopter who can look past her limitations and realize that she will not be a dog park kind or dog, and that she may end up being a 3-legged dog. She will need to engage in more mellow activities because of her prior injuries. Sadie has a lot of love to give and would like nothing more than to find her forever home! Won’t you give her the love she deserves? If you are interested in adopting this beautiful girl, please fill out an online application right away. Don’t wait!
